I found a jewelry shop in Istanbul offering a silver ring with a huge completely deep dark blue garnet. It's truly the prettiest gem I've seen. I just hope it is indeed a garnet.

Great video! I recently purchased a rhodolite garnet ring and I'm in love. I l know rubies are rarer and more expensive, but when I look at this gem's fiery pink flashes mixed with plum and raspberry I just get a little giddy, lol. I prefer this gem over a ruby any day. Most affordable and commercially available rubies look milky and dull. One with great transparency is going to run you thousands of dollars, vs. the price of a crystal clear, unheated garnet. The tsavorite garnet is stunning too!

Garnet is my birthstone. I LOVE it. I have a 1.6ct marquise cut garnet in a white gold pendant. I've worn it everyday on a Tiffany & Co ball chain for decades. It is still as beautiful today as when I got it. And for the record, Im a straight, traditional man, who loves God, America and my wife. I believe men can enjoy the finer things too.

There is an even rarer optical phenomena known in garnets not mentioned here, the usambara effect, it's one of the most peculiar optical effects seen in gemstones, where the colour of the stone is dependant upon the thickness of the material. These usambara garnets are quite rare indeed and require precise cutting dimensions to optimally display the effect, however, when cut well they are truly phenomenal stones displaying both red and green colour face up.

Your Garnets 101 was great. I need some help with identification on a gemstone left with my wife after her first husband died. Is there a way I can get a photo to you? I believe this sample is a Andradite Melanite Garnet weighing 128 grams and the quadrilateral surfaces of nearly black with red where incomplete or pitted. Since the surfaces are rhombic in nature I can measure one nearly complete quadrilateral as 2.0 cm by 2.0 cm with the stones overall length being 5.0 cm. There are also green and white sections(quartz + other?)

I also have a January birthday. January 27 coming next week.I will not say what year. I never liked my birth stone. I never knew it was any other color but red. My sister is July and our birth stone is close in color but I liked her stone better. Now that I know Garnet can be blue or green I would love to see that garnet. Looking forward to learning more about my birth stone.

I'm sitting on like 100lbs of rough corundum right in South Eastern PA ...along with thousands of ancient stone tools made out of it corundum is sapphire and ruby we also have vast diversity of garnets due to the insanity geology and metamorphic upticks The high aluminum content in the world famous wissahickon schist in my area along with all other types of rare earth metals and elements we find colors of sapphires never seen before including ones that look like cotton candy ...like the channel like the info...At one time in history all colored gems were called garnets 😂😂😂 now we understand chemistry a bit better

Thanks for the comment, Oumar. This is one of the great challenges in our business. Trying to identify the specific location where a gem came from. Sometimes it is easy to find trace elements that indicate a source. Other times, it is very difficult or even impossible to determine. First, the Gemological Institute of America frowns on any of us making a “sight I.D”. This means you can’t simply just look at a gem (or a video of a gem) and identify it. My advice is for you to find a gem laboratory that can do the proper tests. Tests can be relatively reasonably priced to identify it as corundum. However, if you want more sophisticated testing like a full spectrum analysis, it can cost a lot more. The good news is, if what you have is 120 kilos of corundum and it is gem grade, then you know it is valuable. On the other hand, if you had material that was identified as Kashmir sapphire you are in a whole different ballpark!

How would one go about to sell Garnet. I have some spectacular specimens I would love an opinion on. If your interested reply and I'll share my information to get an expert opinion on these pieces I have. They are huge, and so deep red and with clarity , and large full boulders. Hi Johanna, Sorry I haven't been regularly active on the site lately as my manufacturer wants me to sell his goods on QVC again. As you probably know I an a huge garnet fan. There is a huge difference between retail prices and wholesale prices. Most of my contacts are manufactureres and buy mainly from the the mines (in the rough) or from stone dealers they have worked with for a long time. Not sure where you are living, but my best advice is to get a booth at a gem show. There are many around the world and in the USA, the best in my opinion would be the Tucson Gem and mineral shows in January each year. Even if you don't get a booth, you can attend show and approach other exhibitors with your gems. Again, not as much as you would make selling it directly, but you could so well with your volume of great garnets! Good Luck!

The answer is....it depends. There are many factors that determine price. Are there visible inclusions to the naked eye? How big is the stone. A large clean stone is much more rare than a small clean stone. Also, some colors are more rare than others (for example the green tsavorite garnet). Buying a stone directly from a gem show-like the Tucson gem and mineral shows-anywhere between 50 cents to several dollars per carat, or even hundreds of dollars per carat depending on the rarity. That said, a typical almandine garnet stone will be a fraction of what you would spend for a ruby
