As a person whose birthstone is garnet, I appreciate this video more than you can imagine! I have never been particularly fond of the deep brownish red garnets that I have seen. Now I know that there are so many more varieties, I will have to rethink my feelings about it. I also appreciate the figures you included explaining how the chemical structure changes to create different mineral varieties and different colors. I have only recently discovered your channel but I will be looking back to watch other videos you have shared! Thanks!

LOVE grants! Lots of colors and even color changing. Plus it wears well in jewelry. And sphalerite or spessertite where it can look like embers burning is magnificent. So many colors to choose from and all are beautiful. Garnets are the unsung heroes of the gem world. And most are affordable too, so check them out. I have several in just about every color and color changing under different light.

I'm a man, and addicted to the deep red color of garnet (pyrope or almandine). I have like thirty of these red garnets in my collection (^_^). The color of the carbuncle (red garnet) is referred to as fire, passion, strong will, and protect you from bad things to arrive...

Garnets are underrated. They are strong enough to make beautiful jewelry pieces,in a lots of colors, cheaper, easy to find. For me at least, Garnets should be more valuated. And the light red varieties are a good Rubies alternative.

I definitely appreciate the humility of "Average" despite the GIA lanyard. The intensity of training and classes from the GIA is definitely nothing to sneeze at. As for Garnets, there's department store Garnets and there are those with exceptional cut, polish, color, tone, hue and saturation that are alive. Some will shift in color and some change color. Shift and change are not the same thing.....I'll step off stage now. LOL.

Honestly I like garnets more than rubies, I appreciate their more subtle "red wine" color as opposed to the brighter crimson color of the ruby. Here in Europe garnets from Bohemia are very famous. My mom got herself a lovely pair of earrings with studded Bohemian garnets when we were in Prague.

I have a copper and red garnet ring. The stone was sold to me as a "pyrope garnet". I don't know much about that (other than what I learned from your video) but the gem is beautiful. Thing is, the stone is true red without any of the orange tones that I associate with garnet. No brown either. On the negative side it is very dark. Depending on the light and position there are facets that go completely black. However, even when it goes black there are these red flashes that stand out. The tsavorites look "warmer" than emerald. IMHO, it is more attractive than peridot.

Got two of the blue/red color change, but again both just over a carat and marquise cut, but I was able to get them.* dont really like marquise cut) I count myself lucky. still looking for that True raspberry rhodolite with the purple-ish overcast. NOT purple red, but a highlight, across the top of the stone usually. Just like a raspberry picked off the bush!

I found a rock in my yard (New Haven County, CT), my property is a rock Amusement park with lots of stone walls, a stone foundation, stone chimneys (2) and walls all around this 1935 country style house. Anyways, I found a rock about half the size of a basketball, flat on the bottom, and it is very bumpy. My geology Facebook group said the bumps are garnets. They are about 1/2 inch round and there are probably 30-40 of them on this one stone. What do I do with it? Should I bring it somewhere to have them removed? There are other stones with bumps too, much like the one I am talking about, I just don’t know what I should do with them.

Can you PLEASE FOR GODDDD do a video on blue and colorless garnets. I been searching the longest for one and I believe you can be the one. Please help me identify my blue garnet I have eye loupe and diamond tester but what else could I use to identify it
@YourAverageJeweler4 жыл бұрын
Blue Garnet would be quite unusual and rare. Not unheard of, but I would be curious why you believe it is a Blue Garnet that you have. There are many other blue gems that would be much more likely. As far as identification, the equipment and experience needed for what you are looking for is best left to a gemologist. There is a lot of overlap between different gemstones. Your best option would be to find a reputable jeweler that is a graduate gemologist to do an official appraisal. They may be willing to just do an ID on the stone, but it is a process that should have several tests and steps to give you a solid answer on stone type. A lesser option is to send it into a reputable lab to get a lab report. Both of these have a cost, so you usually want to have relative certainty of what you have before going forward with these steps. Some jewelers may be willing/able to give a quick opinion, but they need to usually go through an identification process to "know" what the stone is. A lot of people that give these quick opinions are not actually qualified to do so. The most experienced Gemologists at Gem ID understand that it is only a guess 90% of the time and needs more scientific testing to confirm. I still may do a video on this topic, but that hasn't started yet. It's a great idea though. Thank you for your question and for watching!

Hello, thanks for the great video. My birthstone isn't garnet and I couldn't care less. I love garnets among a lot of other gemstones that aren't my birthstone. I find the green colored tsavorite very appealing also. I don't have one. I do however have a large, dark red (almadine) stone cut cabochon with a beautiful 4 ray star in it. The star looks different than star sapphire, sort of needle-like, made up of some gold dust looking mineral. Maybe rutile, I'm not sure. But its gorgeous . 🙂

I have a melanite from Russia, a uvarovite from the Urals too and just ordered a demantoid from Namibia but the ones from Russia are worth more. Are they really better quality or just more scarce coming from that area?
@YourAverageJeweler4 жыл бұрын
A bit of both, but the quality is more a generalization. You can often get nicer Demantoid from Russia. The big things is the have the provenance and history that more people want. It's kind of like how Burmese Rubys are usually more valuable. They can be much nicer, but it isn't a given. Unless you want to background, I say just judge each stone on its quality. Sounds like you have a pretty nice garnet collection.
