Hey Al I’m going fr new videos to old ones and enjoying all of them. I’ve watched lots of videos but I’ve never seen anyone debarks a tree using anything but a drawknife. What you are using looks easier. Did you try a drawknife and then switch? I’m definitely going to have to look into to one of those tools.

I have a couple of draw knifes, I use them to either round or square wood on projects. I made a shave horse several years ago and I use that to make table or chair legs with a draw knife for example.

I have one of these. It doesn't pull much. I always have to just pull with my tractor

Hello miles, It does pull pretty good for me, but I have noticed when I pull a large log up hill it is just easier to pull the log out with the tractor as well. That being said it has worked to my satisfaction and most of my logs have been even too much for my tractor to get out of the woods. Now if I had a cat I could probably get more done.🙂

The pull rating on the Norwood Skidwinch is only 1500#. It can be a real timesaver under the right conditions, but it does tend to be light on power for a lot of situations.

Could you help me understand why you debark your logs? I see a lot of people do this. I get why thy do it for logs they don’t plan to mill for some time. But what’s the purpose if you’re going to mill it right away?

Hi Dexter, Good question, I found that cutting through the bark dulls the blades fast and I only had 11 blades available. With bark left on the tree while cutting I was only getting two to three trees milled before the blade was dull. I just bought a blade sharpener and tooth setter from Norwood Mills so in the future I won't be debarking logs to mill for my beams.

How big a log can that winch skid on your tractor?

Hi Stephen, The biggest I have lifted and dragged has been a 25 ft. log so far.
