No white ants in your part of the world AL? We here in Australia used ant caps on red gum stumps, then concrete stumps, and then fazed out when the concrete slabs came along. Shows how old i am, 1967 started my apprenticeship of Carpentry and Joinery. Dug the holes by hand too and only hand tools.

We have carpenter ants here, but I have't had much of a problem in the build locations although I have found a few ant mounds in my upper property I need to take care of. It sounds like your use to hard work too ....

Getting all that scrap wood cut up for winter was a job well done. Take my advice when you are ready to set up your garden use those log offcuts to make raised garden beds. Those pines have some serious lumber in em! In the background I see some wide enough to max out the mill. I wonder, if you surveyed, how many bf are in those woods? What dims are the wall logs to be, 5" x 8"?
@offgridal10 күн бұрын
Hello PK, I haven't had it surveyed, I deffinetly have several trees already cut down that will max out my mill. This cabin is still going to be stick built and I am thinking of making shingles for the exterior on it, although that will be too many to make by hand so I will mill them as well. When I start the Appellation cabin build it will have 6"X12" beams for the wall logs.

Excellent! I love your decision to enlarge your cabin 'cause if you're going to build a homestead to live in it should be spacious and comfortable and especially with the bathroom inside the cabin. I don't understand most cabin builder who built the bathroom outside the cabin, just imagine how inconvenient is to go to #2 a midnight at 20° F or very early under a snowstorm or rainy. I agree with @shellywinters1093, I don't get the point to build a cabin or a home with XIX century technology and tools if we're living in the century XXI of modern electrical tools. I look forward to watch your huge home. Congrats

Thank you so much, I appreciate it when people understand my intensions. I certainly thought about a sauna/bath house with toilet separate from the cabin, but as you stated it wouldn't be very nice to go out in the cold and it does get cold like -30 F in the winter here at times. Thank you Javier 👍

Nice intro.. At least the rocks have been pretty small so far.. Would it help to dig the first 6 to 9" down and then fill then with a gallon of water and let them soak in or just dig dig dig.. like your doing. Speaking water.. What are the plans for water for this cabin..? Any springs nearby.. or a creek with a ram pump on it..?
@offgridalАй бұрын
I think just digging in dry is fine rather than mud. As for water I will. be making gutters and have a rain catchment system for the garden and I still need to bring water up for inside the cabin . I plan to move the 100 gallon tank from the tiny cabin into this cabin and replace the tiny cabin water tank with the 55 gallon one under the place. The only spring I can find is the one I currently use.
