Just curious, during your winter down/non work time what do you do to occupy yourself? Reading? If so what? Hunting?
@offgridal9 күн бұрын
Great question, I still do many things. I usually draw up my build plans (I.E. Walls and roof design for the current build) and cut trees down for the build. I like to go out and track animals in the winter and see what I can get on film. No hunting or ice fishing yet as I don't have a place to store meat currently. I usually consolidate video's, but this year I won't be doing that. Hoping for a shorter winter this year so I can accomplish more and I am going to try and get creative with more filming this winter and in the future I will work in the shop once built during winters here building furniture and cabinets for my builds. That's a mighty fine pile of boards! With the hardwoods here, which want to twist, cup and bow like crazy, I sticker with 16" by 1/2" by 1" to 1.5" wide. Based on the sapwood shrinking more, I stack with bow *up, or heartwood up (because the bottom dries slower). The ends will be 'smiling' when stacking like this. Then, if the stack is tall and heavy, it will stay straight. I also put two or three cinder blocks on top to press it down.

Great question you are correct most people choose 3/4" to 1" stickers, but for air drying 1/4" like I used is also fine, I make mine 1.5" wide as well. They suggest 1 year per 1" thick lumber to properly air dry and stabilize lumber. I'm trying to get most of it done as soon as possible.

@offgridalАй бұрын
I plan on a ridge beam. Not sure of the size maybe 5"X10"X39' and then not sure how to raise it up. Maybe make two beams and a scarf joint to join them could be possible. Still a challenge to raise as there are no good trees to run cables and hoist to near by the build location.
@___PK__Ай бұрын
@@offgridal Scarf sounds at least twice as easy. Getting it up on the collar ties would be okay up log ramps, I've seen people have luck with that. Then once its up that high, from there I'm not sure how you could. Maybe incrementally jack it up on 2x's? Need to get it up high enough to get the king posts in. Possibly bolt some boards to it on the sides of each end and then make those upright with a mallet, or the tractor? ' Where there's a will there's a way! '
