My first boss was a marine colonel, when he got out of flight school at the top of his class he got the pick fo what he wanted. He picked cargo planes to be around a crew. The fighter general in charge didn't like that so assigned him to roters and he flew a CH-47 in his career and enjoyed the experience with a crew even though it wasn't a big old cargo plane.

I'd like to add a wrinkle to your mental health moment, which is going from enlisted to becoming an officer. In this regard I think the Army has an edge [as a Marine, 77-81, I really hate to say it], because going to college can be difficult, especially if you're seeking a degree that isn't your passion. Most USAF, USN & USMC pilots got degrees in engineering, ]in 1981 I entered CU Boulder as a 22yr old freshman, the transition was jolting. I was a Physics/Astrophysics major - my passion. Over the course of a long slog I ended up with a degree in something I was good at - Classics. Had I been forced to remain solely on my initial path I'd've failed out. Then, in the case of your listener, becoming a Mustang and trying for a flight slot, she'd have you guys as support, but most officers dislike Mustangs. The Army has WO pilots, so not college to mess with and flight time galore - as long as you have flying as the true goal and can forget the fighter jock ego. Comments?
@gbphil
@gbphil Ай бұрын
Gorky - Wombat, always watch your vlogs with interest but also with a bit of scepticism. After all, jocks are rarely humble. Checked out Czar 52 footage whose incident you covered but was somewhat disturbed it was portrayed as an intentional manoeuvre rather than a last minute adaption. The main tenant I discovered was that the intention on the day was to do a touch and go landing that had to be aborted because a KC135 was blocking the runway. As a result the B52 flew along the airfield and asked permission to do a 360 around the control tower, permission was granted despite there being a restricted no-fly zone behind the field. Doing the 360 from the runway, towards the restricted flight zone was a last second holding pattern decision to finish the display plan and it was only when the turn at 60 degree bank angle threatened to encroach the no-fly area that he tried to shade the turn a bit more. I don’t know how important the restriction was or is if the airfield is still active, but the microsecond choice on this pre-display practice day was bust the restriction and lose the display day flight or tighten the turn to miss the restricted area (which perhaps should have been identified by the controller who gave permission in the first place). B52’s don’t turn on a dime so levelling wings and turning right was not an option. Perhaps he was an ass as you suggested but in my short three video research, there was definitely some nuance here. Phil. 😎😇

Running is not bad for your knees. Running with bad technique, will damage your ankles, knees, hips back... The surface does not matter.
@NateHKerr
@NateHKerr Ай бұрын
The surface absolutely does matter. While you are right about technique being incredibly important, running on the right surface can help soften the blow to certain parts of our bodies and save certain joints and tendons from being stretched, pounded on, or otherwise put in circumstances that compromise their longevity. That is why running shoe technology has continuously evolved as well.
@supermilo

Actually you're right, I should say the surface matters, but technique is as you say important. I can imagine a flight deck is worse if that is all you run on!

All the ridiculous DEI/PC things the Washington level military commanders are worried about this day, yet we have ZERO answers for what airframe is going to handle the CAS mission for foreseeable future. I just don't comprehend why we don't spend the money to do whatever needs to be done to inspect 100 or so airframes, and decide which branch gets them. As radical as it sounds, maybe that SHOULD be the Army..can you say best Warrant Officer spot ever? Maybe it should be the Marine Corps. All I know is that the current plan makes absolutely no sense, and that seems to fit right in with the line of thinking for all things Washington D.C. these days.

Wombats drone/CCA skepticism is really disappointing but stereotypical Fighter Mafia. Navy and Airforce have history of developing repeated generations of cheap planes. US bought and tossed fleets of jets from 40s to 60s because tech was advancing so fast. Service lives were 5 to 10 years because a capability was absolutely immediately necessary but would be rapidly surpassed. Similar thing is happening in tech right now with Facebook, Amazon, etc spending 10s of billions each on Nvidia gear that will be obsolete in a year or 2. Just waiting 5 years isn't an option for them and is insane for the US. Single use and multiple use drones are needed today to be able to handle an incredibly dangerous environment, operate from unpredictable vectors, and overwhelm the mass of "any possible opponent". WWII level sized fleets of airframes are needed that will experience Bonber Command levels of attrition. Can't make 1500 F35s a year and couldn't crew them, especially for certain death. "Certain possible opponents" may have 35MM surplus military aged males that they think they can lose without repercussions the US assuredly does not and is very aware of this. CCAs can also have more aggressive flight envelopes, smaller signatures, and greater weapon capacity since they don't have passengers that have a hard 9g limit, need constant oxygen, pressure, cockpit bubbles, and wasteful things like ejection seats and redundant systems. Should US have stuck with Mustangs rather than acquire and dispose of several iterations of jets? Would you pause on acquiring a missile today because a better one will be available in a decade? The responsible thing is to build a capability you can acquire in the (tens of ) thousands today and iterate on in a decade, with perhaps an electronics upgrade at the 5 year point. Everyone needs to stop thinking in post 91 mindset of acquiring 150 units that need to last 4 decades but rather in 48 mindset of buying thousands today and then thousands of the next model in 5 to 10 years. And also focusing on firms that can create and go to production in 2 years rather than 10. Lockheed used to go from blank paper to UFOs in 4 years when theybwere drawing planes by hand and had to smuggle titanium out of the USSR to build the airframe...
