OK, at the risk of being flamed, surely this is the ideal use case for a stealth install - Bluetooth receiver hidden well away from prying eyes would let you drive it from nothing more exotic than a phone or tablet - no messing around with physical media or FM radio but the stock system is still there if you need it for tornado warnings (!) or whatever. Use the existing factory speaker surrounds as dummies for aftermarket coaxials (tweeters in the A-pillars were never a feature of any vintage muscle car I know of), concentrate on SQ over SPL and be happy. Thanks for the vid

Damn - the reproduction radio for my ‘69 Charger is like $750 alone on YearOne. So much money.

Thanks for watching commando! We'd recommend getting into a radio that will play from a memory stick. Retrosound USA has a nice head unit that will bolt into a stock, classic car face plate and provide outputs for a CD changer or USB if that is what you need. The radio runs about $179. They have powered subs available too.

All good. We recommend going out and looking at what is available. Any more, most parts companies have their catalogs online. The more pages and stuff, the easier the restoration will be--usually. Pay particular attention to floor pans, hoods, fenders etc when looking. Around $5000 will get you a driver coupe that needs work around our shop. Fastbacks go much higher. Be good to watch our episodes on buying a muscle car.

@tyluv71 You are welcome! If it is a hardtop you will have an easier time with the sub. and we highly recommend a subwoofer. Makes a huge difference.

Okay, great vid, but... There is stuff to explore well above this level - my 67 has a competition level system (I used to be a pro installer and competitor), but between that and yours. Six inch 6.5s components in the kicks (custom MDF kicks), and a single 12 in a cabinet built into the left rear fender recess works well. Ignore 6x9's in the rear tray. A good 4 channel amp to power. This necessitates a bigger alternator. I use an Optima yellow top.

The battery works well in the Shelby position, so wiring the amp is straight forward. I also removed the console and use a DIN radio (Alpine) in the dash with time alignment and iPod controller. With no console, the front sounds very natural, and spacious, with good imaging and staging. I prefer MB Quarts for fronts. JL do a wonderful range of 12 inch speakers that can live in a small sealed enclosure.

I have had a big system (2 x 12's, with 1000w RMS of amplification) in my 67, but to be honest, the single 12 actually sound better (or a pair of tens). Use good cable (Monster Cable recommended) and loads of Dynamat and dynaliner. For every 3db you drop the noise level inside the car, you effectively increase your dynamic range exponentially. Finally, choose a good professional installer that has a solid reputation - 1/2 your budget is the install to make it sound good.

Ok, we're going to jump in here. Commando, buy as much car as you can afford. Older cars, especially cars like the Charger, are pretty expensive. We'd recommend going after a Mustang or Camaro of that same era. parts are more readily available and the coupes (Mustang) can be had for around $5000 in running condition. Yama is right, the Mopar stuff, particularly the Chargers and Callengers can be expensive.

Keep an eye on craigslist you can find them cheap, and most of all, don't be picky. If it runs and drives and goes down the road and doesn't have frame or major floor rot, its not that bad of a start. Also don't be afraid of 4 door cars. Most collectors/restorers don't want them, and unless the owner is out of touch with the actual value of their car (as a lot are) you can have them for around half their 2 door counterparts and can often be found under $3000 in driving condition.

Yeah, I've come to terms, price wise. I'm a bit more interested in the 50's-60's (mid to early 60's) era of cars. Thinking of an Impala and while most can be pretty pricey I've found some for around 8k, quite a lot for a starter, but I think I've found a decently steady job. I'm 15 by the way, another year or a year an a half before I can drive.

Great show and can I make a suggestion, please? Can you post a list, to include part numbers, of all the parts you’ve installed on the car on your website? Not that I don’t mind reviewing previous shows, but having a quick reference build-sheet would help some of us obtain the parts we’ve seen you two install. Have Vinny do it…might get him into Fords. LOL Remember, the greatest complement to a car builder is emulation! Thanks for the consideration.

Wow, 5k for a mustang isn't bad, especially running. I'm pretty picky when it comes to them though, and yes, I came to the sad reality that Challengers/Chargers can be pretty pricey. I've even been thinking of a 63 or 64 Impala. What's your take on either of those? I also really appreciate the help!

That is all speaking generally of course, some 4 door cars sell for a lot of bank too, especially 57 chevys and 65-66 Pontiacs because it doesn't mess up the look as bad as say a 4 door 71 chevelle.

Hey, just a thought - I'm on the cusp of doing a refit of my sounds (putting a much less expensive set up in my 67), would you like me to film the process - I don't have any editing software - if I send the raws up to you, would you like to edit it and use the footage?

Lets be honest theres no such thing as a "cheap used one". If you want a '69 Charger that just needs some TLC expect to shell out $15,000. You can't get a gutted shell for under $5,000. I'm gonna guess your around 13-14 (nothing wrong with that, start on cars young, good for you), just trying to bring you back to the real world.
