episode 6 | A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A SURGICAL TECH | my stapler broke 😫, new surgeon, fast cases
Guys lol I did not get to film my stapler that broke cause I was in my case! So here's a few breakdown of what happened today:
1. LAP GASTRIC SLEEVE
New surgeon, super nice. Did this case once and I just knew basic stuff. He had an assist whom I knew from a different hospital so that's great! She helped me set up. He had so much stuff in his card lol lawrdddd hammercy but it all made sense as I read it. So he uses the electric reloadable stapler and the tan reload was not snapping right. It's taking me longer than usual to reload it cause usually it just snaps but this time it wasn't doing it. So after 10 million tries I decided to share my misery and have him and the assist try it and just as I expected, THE STAPLER WAS DEFECTIVE. Thank u God. I knew I wasn't crazy. So yeah, he wasn't mad but he's usually super fast at these cases and I was slowing him down so nope, not today. Resolved! Whew I was sweating though.
2. TRACHEOSTOMY
I know this surgeon. He's old but his history tells me that he gets terribly sick patients so there's a chance it'll take longer than usual but unfortunately after I set up, they had me take lunch and moved me to a different case which was super delayed and that gave me time to kinda relax and chill since it's so fast paced in the morning. By the way, if you have my booklet, there's a set up for this.
3. LACERATION REPAIR
I didn't know how big or long the laceration was but I set up as if it's just a small scratch. I was wrong. It was long and deep and had to scrape alot of dead skin. Please see my basic set up video on my channel for more info.
So I left at the right time this time which is at 3pm and I only got to do 2 cases. So this goes to tell you on average how many you do in a day if you're 8s but more obviously if you are 12a or 10s. Average cases with 8s is 3 or 4 depending on how fast the surgeon is. For 12s, expect atleast 4 cases.

love the video! could you maybe make a video or a post showing how to take good notes for a case during clinicals/orientation? do you write down major steps of the procedure, order of instruments used, draw pics of the set up, quirks for that specific surgeon etc… thanks 😊

Hi! I love your videos, they are so informative! I just wanted to know if you stay throughout the surgery in the actual surgical area and what else you've helped with in a surgery other than pass instruments. I will be starting school in August, but I keep on having doubts if it's the right choice. I currently work at a veterinary clinic and was in school to become a veterinary technician so that's where I'm having doubts. Thanks!

I’m planning on going into school for Surgical Tech program and love your videos! I have a question: Can you eventually become a Surgical First Assist? And how? Thank you! 🙏🏻
@editedbyamber7988
@editedbyamber7988 Жыл бұрын
To answer your question, I’ve been currently looking into First Surgical Assistant programs and from the 1 program I saw, there are pre requisites that are needed for admission. 1) A surgical tech verification and 2) atleast 1 year of being a surg tech before entering the program because a First Surg Assist teaches you how to do surtures, open the chest, etc., things like that so more school is required. I think the school I saw was 1 year, maybe 2.

Is your job stressful standing for many hours during a surgery? Also how many surgeries you help with in a day?
@SURGICALTECHGEEK
@SURGICALTECHGEEK Жыл бұрын
Yeah we stand a lot that's why u need good shoes. Depends what hours you do. 8s you do minimum 3 depending on how heavy the case is. If it's cysto, you can do 5 of those back to back

I know this is random but I was wondering how do surgical assistants find jobs? I only see jobs out there for surgical techs when I search for it. Do you know how that works? I’m curious to know how

U usually have to scrub with a surgeon to get work which is why I recommend scrubbing first to lay out ur grounds. Then u approach them if they need some services.

Can someone single with no family to support live off of this career? Or would I absolutely need a 2nd income? I'm super excited about the program, but the groups on FB make the living situation sound like doom and gloom.
