I just drop mine in the hive too. I don't crush them but I know Earl does both ways. It does work because if I forget to put them in the beetles come back. But in the hives that have the peppermint are no beetles and my yard gets a lot of shade. Thanks good health and God bless friend 👍

My question is what keeps your honey from tasting like peppermint & red looking

So far I’ve never seen that to be a problem. as long as there’s nectar coming in I don’t even know if the bees consume this to add to their nectar and honey. Several times I’ve seen the bees carrying out very small pieces of the peppermint and throwing it through the screen bottom board. I have decided that the peppermint may help to deter the hive beetles, but if you have comb breakage where the beetles can hide I ended up having a hive slimed out this past year. I would also like to figure out maybe how to use peppermint oil instead of candies. I’ve just not seen any thoughts on how to do that.

I have been thinking about trying to put peppermint lollies in my hives but am hesitant to as there may be an effect on the bees eating something artificial. Any thoughts?

Lollies, Australia? Do you currently have hive beetles? I will be starting my sixth year of beekeeping, one things for sure bees usually don’t do what you think. In a couple of my hives, the peppermint candies seem to keep the beetles out, but in the other hives, I still had quite a few beetles that I would have to smash at the end boards. I do believe the peppermint deters the hive beetles But I also believe each hive of bees is different in controlling and taking care of their hives. In my opinion, the bees have not seemed bothered by the candies. I’m not for sure if they consume the candies, on some of the hives, I could see where they carried out tiny pieces of the candy. I currently have a spray bottle of peppermint oil and water that I use to spray on myself, especially after a bee sting when I’m working the bees to mask their scent and or mine. Not for sure how to do it but this year I’m going to use one of my hives and test spraying this concoction inside where the beetles congregate. Back to the candies-lollies I would hope that if it doesn’t hurt us, it wouldn’t hurt the bees. I also never tasted it in the honey or seen traces of the red color.
