A friend had a hive loaded with Small Hive Beetles. He tried the blasters and swiffers and did not see great success using them. He purchased an oil tray bottom board insert from Dadant and virtually got rid of all of the small hive beetles. (Some put DE in them instead of oil) Just another tool in the fight against these insidious bugs.

Sorry to hear about your issues. The Beetle Buster does not work. I have one and tried it for one season and I actually think it let more beetles in than it helped. Mine was given to me by the creator to try then when I told him how I felt about it he started making threats. Sad deal all the way around. I know what you need to try, peppermint candy in the hive. The red and white striped one. Add one to each cover of each box and the beetle problem will cure itself. I haven't tried it but it's all over KZbin right now. Good luck!!

New subscriber here. My hives rest on large cement pads to start off. Around the pads I have placed rocks. The pupa can make it through the rocks to the soil, but I am eventually going to cover them, plus a large area with crushed concrete and dry sacks of concrete to make the terrain less hospitable to them. I have heard of using squares of corrugated plastic signs with a roach paste injected deep within. The beetles can access the holes, bees cannot. I have not heard of a brand of roach paste that is labeled for such use. I use Swiffers for now. Great material on your channel. Thank you for sharing.

Great video Jason, I use the same concept with the DE in my Apimaye hives bottom tray. I also use homemade Beetle Blasters inside the hive with DE in them. The only drawback from the CD cases is the bees tend to propolize the holes in the CD cases after only a few beetles go in. I gave up on the Swiffer sheets after the bees kept chewing them.

I come from South Africa, where small hive beetle originates. Most important thing is to maintain bee space. Make sure bees can access the whole of the top bars. Otherwise bees will chase small hive beetles onto the top bars and because bees cannot access this space, small hive beetle will just hide here. What they then do is very interesting. They stimulate the bees antenna that are chasing them and this causes the bee to actually feed the small hive beetle. Major waste of resources Other things you can do, when feeding patties, only feed what will be consumed completely within 5 days. As you mentioned, eggs take 7 days to hatch. Also a trap similar to a fly or yellow jacket trap with yeast located up wind of the Apery works well
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Great tips. I did read about the beetles using their antennas to trick the bees into feeding them. That's crazy! I am gonna have to trap your fly trap idea. Does the type of yeast matter?

I use Diatomaceous Earth in my beetle blasters and in the pan under my bottom screen boards. Easy to clean and reuse the beetle blasters and pan. Be sure to get food grade DE. DE is fossilized plankton that acts like razor blades to any insect with an exoskeleton. DE become ineffective once it gets wet so it would have to be re applied after it gets wet. I heard bottom entrances work but my take is hive beetles can land on the hive and just walk in through cracks and crevices in the hive and they can definitely walk upside down on most materials. Typically you have to treat your baffle material with a product to make it so slick the SHB can't hold on to when up side down.

My beehive has one of these trays, but DE isn't working! They're writhing in it but not dying! Shite. I'm in there nearly weekly squishing the beetles. I have blasters, they do a bit of work... what are you doing about the damage to the combs?? Are you removing the damaged wax and product/babies nearby larvae holes? Freeze it and remove everything? I can't seem to stop them enough in time to keep the bees production healthy. I have an entrance trap coming soon, but we'll see... adding swiffer soon, and more dio I suppose around the nooks and crannies... do you scratch and scrape the corners of the frames?

I stop feeding pollen patties after March. If I’m giving a split a little boost, I will cut a 1/2”X4” chunk and give them. I also use a pyrethrin based pesticide mixed with water and apply in a 3’ circle around the hives. Use a watering can and apply after dark. Don’t use a sprayer, it will kill the bees if it gets airborne. I know a lot of people don’t like using stuff like that around their hives, though.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I read about the pyrethrin but I'd rather avoid chemicals if possible. I did see there is some soil-dwelling entomopathogenic nematodes that can be used as a form of control but not sure how well they really work. Have you heard of this?

How about combining the Swifter sheets with the CD case and honey... Cut out a piece of the Swifter sheet to fit inside the CD case, cut out openings on all four sides of the CD case, try to remove material from within the CD case to create more space inside of it, then attach the square piece of swifter sheet to one side of the CD case (on the inside) with double sided tape, and apply a bit of honey to the middle of it, then close the CD case and place inside the beehive.

JC, another good one. A quick question. I wrote about the early Oxalic Acid dribble and you did answer me. You stressed that the OA only kills mites on the bees and not in the cells. I got the impression, and it might have been obvious that I should wait until there were more hatched bees and the frames were pretty full of them. At least that's what I thought. Right or Wrong? Also May this year in the SF Bay area is almost unprecedented in the amount of rain and cold weather we're having. So I didn't want to upset them too much. But it should be clearing tomorrow and am anxious to get it done. My thoughts were to do it after the foragers come in in late afternoon. Your thoughts please.
@JCsBees
@JCsBees 5 жыл бұрын
No, it will not kill mites in cells. For this reason you should wait until you have little capped brood. Waiting on the foragers to return is a good idea. I would resort to Randy Olivers article to learn more about dribbling. It's listed in this videos description. Best of luck!

Hive beetles lay eggs on pollen so the larva has protein to develop just like bee larva...the detritus that accumulates in the bottom of the hives is a place that needs to be strictly monitored as it is a perfect source for beetles to lay eggs and larva get out of control. Joe May did a video with the CD case technique but he added a poison that he wouldn't reveal. After a bit of research it appears to be boric acid mixed with a bit of honey

Steve Jackson I believe it may be the powerful roach bait like the comment above. The pesticide isn’t allowed to be used with/around bees, at least your government inspector will tell you this.

Richard McCallum yes, roach bait is boric acid. The formula I found was soy flour and boric acid in equal parts then add enough honey to make it slightly thicker than honey then enough crisco to make a very thick paste. 2 or 3 blobs about the size of a BB. The other control technique I use is pool salt under my hives. It kills the foliage so no weed wacker needed and makes the soil inhospitable or larva. The bad part is it'll bee years if ever that those patches of ground could be used for agriculture

Steve Jackson that’s interesting. I haven’t heard about adding honey. The beekeepers who I’ve seen use it just use the paste in the tube. I guess the honey is to attract the beetles to eat.

The elbow doesn't work , guardian makes one and a special front entrance, both did not work It was very difficult for the bees to use no matter how long and I personally think It was harder to defend and possibly Entices encourages Robbing. That would need to be watched for longer periods with different apirys

beetle Blaster oil traps go between frames and work well killing adults. You didn't mention any chemical controls. GuardStar is a treatment for the soil below hives.

I don’t know why beekeepers don’t install a simple cheap made screen bottom trap below the entrance so the larvae never even make it to the soil. There’s info on the internet. Simple 4 pieces of wood frame with a screen bottom so water can drain. Inside wood lined with sandpaper so they can’t escape when it’s wet outside. They use the water to stick to the wood to escape. Sandpaper breaks that wet smooth contact. I’ll be trying it on my hives when I get started.

I bought a nuc from a local bee keeper to start this hobby and I didn't realize the frames were infested.... I had no mentor and was just You Tubing to find out what was going on.... but the hive swarmed.... if you see larva that looks more like large grains of rice ... it is the beetle....
@FloryJohann
@FloryJohann 5 жыл бұрын
@@fionmor4893 The bees could had swarmed for many reasons.....no food resources, to hot in hive body, no room in hive body especially if you left them in the nuc, maybe you used some chemicals or treatments that the bees did not like , like cinnamon and peppermint or mite treatment, or some other treatments that you used at your yard. The bees could had made emergency cells, after the queen got killed and every queen cell could mean a swarm until nothing is left.

Depending where you live, you may not have beetles especially if you live in the northern part of the US and Canada. Make plans and treat your bees for mites in July, August may be to late. And you may have to re-treat in fall. Take a mite count with alcohol. It takes time to lower the mite count when treating and some treatment does not kill the mites at all instead just make the male mite sterile so it can not reproduce. Know your brood cycle because after about 3 weeks your new worker bees emerge and with it new mites. Now at this point hopefully you are still treating for the newly arrived mites. When fumigating with OA(oxalic acid), OA stays active only for a couple of hours every-time you use it and is only good before the honey flow (early spring) when the mite count is low.

I strongly disagree with the statement that hive beetles can not hover. They do a good job hovering around my hive and their landings are very well targeted. So far this year we do not have many beetles, just seen 1 in one of my test hive. Last year we had them by the tons this time of the year and we had a lot of rain so far mixed with warm temperatures.

Another awesome video. I'm new to beekeeping and saw my very first SHB last week. Already I hate them(: I came across a product called "Guardian Hive Entrance" The critics say "the bees can't do good housekeeping on the bottom board" (similar to the pvc top entrance). Have you heard or tried Guardian, if so what were your findings as far as housekeeping? Thanks for all your knowledge and time.

Tried the Guardian Hive Entrance on two of my 8 hives and they did not work. I was hopeful. I do use the DE on the bottom of screened bottom boards and they do help, they also kill any mites that drop down. Still working hard to control the first wave of hive beetles this year, last year was not as bad. May try the CD cases with boric acid, still want to research what if any adverse reactions of using boric acid.

Last year I had hive beetle infestation that caused my bees to abscond in July. It was bad. I have a new hive this year and started out with Guardian hive entrance and also oil pan under the bottom board. I have 2 oil traps per deep box. My whole yard is mostly shade and humid. I put bees in the sunniest spot. I have very few hive beetles now. I don’t know if the Guardian works well or if it’s the oil pan in bottom. I suspect it’s the combination of everything. Or maybe it’s just really early in the season. Last year I tried CD cases and 2 beetle traps in each box.
