So, you face the magnet towards the opening so it wont overheat and fail?? what about all the other subwoofer boxes out there that are built magnet facing inwards yet never fail?
@ilpatongi
@ilpatongi 6 жыл бұрын
Ported boxes have the same principal, the port allows air to circulate thus cooling the magnet and coil. In sealed and passive radiator boxes the coil cools itself In this application, there's an higher risk of fail due to the sub being underground. Imagine a hot summer day, the grond absorbs the sun's radiations and basically insulate the sub in a heat chamber. Doesn't matter anyway, the sound won't be affected

Obviously, if you live in a flood hazardous area, you don't dig down speakers in the yard. If you do, you should get the penalty of a broken speaker, for being that fucking daft. However, I'd still prefer anything else over this.

Tamped properly in clay heavy soil you won't have much of a cabinet resonance issue heh...but that's why we build well braced & damped boxes. They should have the active driver sealed with a passive radiator rather than a capped port. With weather sealed PR it's be much more reliable against humidity and if the PR ever rotted it's a cheap replacement. Sticking a bunch of desiccant packs inside would help keep the coil-corroding humidity at bay. Apparently the brand sucks, looks cheap at any rate. Might be fun to copy with a saturday and spare woofers...rain barrel buried sub? lol.

I'm not convinced about the air flow cooling the magnet. There is no way the speaker has enough movement to evacuate the air from the box to then be able to replace it with cold air. Convection will play a part and radiation of heat from the hot to the cold area in the top of the pipe where the air is being replaced but there is no air flow from the outside to the magnet.
@timgermanyjr
@timgermanyjr 7 жыл бұрын
Regardless, having the motor assembly in the ported section helps with cooling more than having it in the sealed section.
@evilutionltd
@evilutionltd 7 жыл бұрын
I totally agree with that. I just don't agree that it happens through convection as alluded to in the video. I would guess conduction of heat through the different heat potential of the low air compared to the air higher up. There isn't a through flow to create air flow from the chimney effect.
@timgermanyjr
@timgermanyjr 7 жыл бұрын
It's a positive/negative pressure effect that causes the air to 'dance' inside the ported section. How much heat transfer there is is arguable. I'd say that the air movement alone is what helps cooling in the same way a fan keeps you cool. There's def not a huge exchanged of air happening from the driver to the outside air.
@stefankoopmans2200
@stefankoopmans2200 7 жыл бұрын
When the air inside the chamber raises in temperature, it will also expand and rise to the top to vent out. Also surrounding airflow outside will create circulation so it's is definitely better to direct the magnet this way.
@StrangeDuck
@StrangeDuck 7 жыл бұрын
the cone moving is actually how subwoofers cool the coil. its just basic woofer design. like, pretty much all drivers work this way,

Hearing it over your recorded and then through your device would be pretty meaningless. It is a standard 12" sub in a fourth order enclosure. It will not have a wide frequency range but should do well in the range it was designed for.
