Another advantage of an aeroport is adjustable tuning frequency by easily lengthening or shortening the tube. Only ran slot port myself but I would like to try an aero!

One of the biggest things to test when doing comparisons of this nature is the difference between the impedance the amplifier sees between both port designs as this will change the amplifiers output power and give a unfair/different result

When comparing same box size and same tune It's not a unfair result...it's an inherited result due to the enclosure design.

@@jeffhoman9227 Right, this is part of what the test is supposed to show. No point in running a test if you're going to try to compensate for things before you even run a test. (There's a point to be made about having a "control" in an experiment, but that's different. The purpose for this test was to show these kinds of differences.)

The big downside to port tuning, is the loss of musicality. When you port tune, it's basically optimising a smallish portion of bandwidth overall- and then you end up trying to find songs with that sweet spot that doesn't muddy up , fall flat pr bottom out. It took me years of builds to try to dial in the "best of worlds" so i could enjoy all different types of music. If you listen to MUSIC, sealed is your best option. As for slot vs aero porting i think the attraction of aero is ease of design and build. Best option for slot is to kerf, and knowing what your optimum cabin resonance rests at

I remember running this test back in 1998. Yes, I am that old. I compared a slot port, round plastic port, and a square wood port. all had ported to the same frequency with the same overall internal cubic space. By using an SPL meter, sound spectrum analyzer, and multiple individuals, it was found that the square port sounded the best and rated highest on the SPL meter. However, using 3/4 inch MDF was the best thickness to use. Long story, but think was what a pipe sounds like when you talk through it.

I always found that although an Aero port chuffed audibly when in your face, overall it ended up sounding more ballsy and better when listening from the Driver's or optimal position, with the sub in the rear (in a hatch or open environment). When inside a trunk in a box separate from the drivers compartment (not on a baffle), they are difficult to distinguish and end up taking on characteristics of a BP.

You can't do identical port areas with an arrow versus slot port. Airports typically use 50% less area because there are circle if you had the airport the exact square inches of the slotted port it would be way too big and tuned way off. He even said in the video that he dats both of them and they both came out at the same frequency so his calculations are correct.
@f.j.z3213
@f.j.z3213 Жыл бұрын
@terryheidmann4961 he also showed us that the aero port had almost 3x the port velocity. Not necessarily a god thing. Yes, tuning was the same. I can tune a 8" just the same. Just lengthen it. Use a 2" port and you can stil get the same tuning, at maby 6x the port velocity.

Aeroport vs. slot-ported Pros (aeroport): + Easy to install and tune to your preferred frequency. + Will have a flatter response above the tuning frequency, thanks to the higher air velocity. + Can be replaced. Cons (aeroport): - Higher chance to experience "chuffing". - Less output compared to the slot port, especially below tuning Pros (slot): + Much better output in general + Less chance for chuffing, smoother sounding. + More variability in customization to your liking. + Does double as additional internal bracing. Cons (slot): - Once built, it stays the same, so you need to design it especially for your use-case. - Does not offer variable tuning.

Great video and great comparison!!! Very informative and very interesting in the final results!!! I still personally prefer the Aero port!!! I would assume that when it comes to listening to certain songs or certain kinds of music you could possibly notice a difference between the two types of ports!!! Is that correct to say??? In the time that i been doing Car Audio i have used a sealed box and Band pass box!!! I have never really used a slot ported box!!! I guess the best way to know is to listen to both kinds of ports in person to notice the difference between the two!!! I have just subscribed to your channel!!! Great video and a reference for the future. Nice that even with appreciable power applied, your phone didn't distort the sound and I guess they'll ALWAYS make some noise up close other than what's in the program. Since you've done the work, here's a new hard-on for everyone - Connect them 100% in parallel (!!!) and get the best of both, keeping the ports apart with a clever divider or rotate them. (*_*) PS---I spent EVEN more time admiring the boxes' designs than absorbing the information, lol.

I build a lot of boxes, and this was a great video !! I prefer Aero over slot, if you build your enclosure correctly you can even make your port adjustable on the fly. Something you can’t do with Vented. I also don’t like the “chuffing” from vented. Maybe I’m the only one that can hear it, but just not musically appealing. I’ve had some great vented boxes over the years, but just prefer aero. Subbed, great job on the boxes ….👌👏

I'm guessing by vented you mean the slot ported as slot or aero they're both vented enclosures and as for adjusting a slot ported box on the fly you just slide in a section of wood or dense foam to reduce the height of the slot to lower the Fs tuning as you've effectively made the port longer just like you might add a block of wood inside the enclosure to reduce the Vas and raise tuning for burping rather than booming, slot ported every time here and tune low to push the group delay out of harms way.

@g7vqedave2
@g7vqedave2 Жыл бұрын
@@drrckhamilton I'm talking about my elderly mk 1 JL 13W7 here but from memory the Fs of that speaker was 27 Hz so using Win ISD my best box, again from memory, was a 7 cu ft tuned just below the speakers Fs at about 23 Hz. This wasn't a massively loud box but compared to a box tuned to give large gain at the vehicles cabin gain frequency say between 40 and 50 Hz for burping in competition or impressing bystanders it would be many Dbs higher in the 20 to 30 Hz range ie. a street bass box. Group delay will always be present in a ported box, more so when the box is tuned for max gain, and gives the flabby response that sealed box fans avoid but tuning the ported box low and spreading that gain to produce a flat response at 20 Hz where most sealed boxes can only dream of output leaves a more modest delay in the 30 Hz area and proper rumble.

You should do a thermal on the voice coil. Cause personally I want the one that keeps me from frying my coils
@oldolfmann8927
@oldolfmann8927 11 ай бұрын
If you are that close to frying your coils you should buy a better woofer while you can still sell the one you are currently using. That being said, if you have the ability to run a slow test signal sweep on your ported box, you can actually visually see where the port is tuned. It will be the frequency where your woofer moves the least and the port moves the most air. With a large port, sometimes it will almost make your woofer appear completely stopped with almost no excursion, but the port will be moving massive amounts of air. This is the freq where your woofer will suffer the most. Because this is also usually the freq where you get the most SPL, and it is also the freq you love because you can really crank those tunes up with that magic freq. This tuned freq is also where your impedance will be the lowest and put the most load on your amplifier and get it hot and get it to really crank out that one bass freq. All the while that voice coil is barley moving and barely getting any cool air pumped around it, and it is getting hot, then your woofer goes Poof! How do you get around that? What's the answer? Choose a smaller port, a smaller port will not control the woofer movement as much at the tuned freq and the woofer cone/voice coil can move up and down more and get the cool air moving around it to keep it cool. Make sure to round and smooth the smaller port ends to keep the chuf away. Yes you will decrease your ability to play that one magic bass freq, but your amplifier will love you for it, your voice coil will love you for it, and your box will have a better flatter response.

But one of the points of the video is when using a round aero port you don't go same size. They are supposed to be more efficient so you need to reduce the volume of the Aero port by 35-50% ( depending on your opinion) compared to a slot port. If you made them the same then the Aero port would be actually larger because it is more efficient.

You can't compare the "air velocity" that way. Because the surface space of the aero port is smaller, the moving air is more focussed (contained in a tighter area). So whatever air it is moving will likely measure higher. The slot port is so large that the air that it moves is so much kore widely sldisbursed that it simply is not an apples to apples scomparison. For strictly measuring the quantity of air passing through the ports, you would have to use something to capture the total amount of air passing through. Like using heavy plastic shaped like the port that then came to a single/same shape (smaller really) at which loint you could measure the quantity and velocity of the air being moved. I mean yes but also no. Yes port area affects spl and the peakiness of the box but the benefit of the aeroport is you can use roughly half the port area and not have port noise. This saves airspace overall. So it's situational. The aeroport could save you enough airspace to build the box bigger and give a better power efficiency. Personally I prefer aeros due to ease of build but ports can be any shape as long as the resistance added by the area is calculated to the end needs.

The whole purpose of this video is for fun but also, if you do some research, you do not equal the size going from a rectangle to a round port. This is a whole opinionated deal with this aero ports are supposedly more efficient so you’re supposed to be able reduce their size by 35 to 50% or whatever someone’s opinion is. And be equal to a slot port. Think about it how many normal low end or mid range 12 do you see with a 6 inch airport unless it’s some crazy high-end 3 inch excursion SPL sub everyone uses a 4 inch airport for 12. For this subwoofer, a 6 inch airport would’ve been too much area. This is why I wish they made more sizes in round ports like 4 inch 4 1/2, 5”, 51/2” etc…

@@HiFiVectorAeros are more efficient, yes. If you make them smaller than You would a slot then your entirely defeating the purpose of using the aero port and building your box wrong. I’ve never seen a woofer manufacturer recommend different area for slots or Aeros, they just give a straight up port area recommendation. Just think about it a little.

What you should do is swap the boxes to see which side the slot Port could have been louder because it was on the left side of the vehicle and if you have the meter on the right or the other way around

How do you design for a slot port? I use Term Pro and it doesnt support slot port yet. Supposedly adding it soon (hopefully). But do you basically do a normal round port, figure out the volume it uses, then try to build a slot port with the same volume? I still think the aero ports being plastic might vibrate a bit introducing additional sound/distortion due to the plastic materials.. but not sure.

Looks like Aero port hits a little harder with bottle shakeage (and easier to tune of course) and will probably last longer because sub doesn't hit max excursion mechanical limits as often as it did in the slotted Port box

@HiFiVector
@HiFiVector Жыл бұрын
No, because round ports are technically more efficient so the whole consensus is to reduce the area by 35 to 50% compared to a rectangle port and that is where difference of opinion on how much to reduce the port area . But going from a rectangle port to a round aero port it will always be less port area required. If you went identical port area the round part would technically be too much port area because of its higher efficiency. But this is a topic that has so many different opinions and has for many years.
