The new Akko cream switches are indeed superior to their predecessors in practically every aspect of the switch. However, it is worth pointing out that sound preference is entirely subjective and these are on the clackier side. Therefore, one should see many other sound tests to get a clear picture of the profile of the switch.
After our brief break, we decided to step up our hobby game and delve deeper into refining our switch options, stabilizer tuning, and switch lubrication. What's more, we've fine-tuned our modding approach prioritizing the switch, allowing the switches to sound as genuine as possible given the "budget" constraints. The result is a solid alternative if a full 75% CNC anodized aluminum kit is not an option.
The TH-80 from Epomaker, which, when fully modded, serves as a more budget friendly alternative. It's a great south-facing plastic keyboard option that offers a premium experience akin to a full CNC aluminum kit, but at a mere fraction of the cost. However, we strongly recommend swapping out the default plate-mounted stabilizers, which we found to be lacking in quality. For this, the Epomaker plate mounted stabs available on Amazon make an excellent budget replacement.
Mods:
-- Noico 80Mil Sound Dampener. This mod helps with weight, vibrations and deeper/ fuller sound profile.
-- Light amount of shredded memory foam (Adds a creamier sound signature)
-- 2-Layer tape mod (Deeper sound signature)
--Pe Foam Mod. (Poppier sound signature)
-- Hand Lubed Switches (superior consistency and smoother feel)
-- Akko cream yellow V3s/ Pros (depends on overall feel and sound when tested) on all stabilizers
-- Mixture of 19.5mm/ 22mm springs for a crispier, faster typing experience on all stabilizers
- -Carefully selecting switches based on smoothness and feel for the stabilizers is important.
-- Switched stock stabilizers for Epomaker plate-mounted stabilizers as we felt the quality of the stock was very subpar.
-- Manually balanced all wires
-- Hole-modded all stabs and lubed with GPL 205g0 for the wires, stems and housing. This mod cuts virtually all rattle and ticking.
-- Spacebar and backspace have Noico Dampener for a "thockier", less hollow and fuller sound profile.
