Epoxy Mistakes -- And How to Avoid Them!

The internet is full of epoxy lies! As we mentioned in our Burning River Table Video, the epoxy pour on our river table did not go the way we saw in a lot of KZbin videos and blog posts. So we thought it was important as educators to tell you why, and how to avoid those epoxy mistakes in the future! The top issues we had were epoxy cracking (super fixable), bubbling and reacting (less fixable) and the epoxy reaction producing too much heat.

Too much hardener added in the mix. Reduce to near the minimum amount for high ambient temperatures and large pours. It will slow the hardening time but fewer issues with exothermic run away.

I have a self mixing epoxy and a caulk gun and when used it to fill up a little plastic see-through cup it melted the cup and I tested it with my heat the thermometer heat gun and it said it got up to 300°. That's why I'm here because I never realized epoxy got hot.

6:30 yep "doing your research" is a good moral. I have also found that doing small experiments -- tiny versions of the real piece -- are helpful in discovering those catastrophic failures earlier. And, since it's tiny version you were going to throw out anyway, the "catastrophe" is minimal, but you still learn the lesson. So ... fail early, fail often. ;)

For sure! Although Resin is tricky-- I did do a small river table mockup before the big one, but it's the large quantities that cause the runaway exothermic reaction as mentioned in the video. So I didn't see any of those issues until the big pour for the real piece. But yes yes yes! Absolutely make mockups, they [almost] always save you some headache down the road.

How many times have I encountered the same issue going from small prototypes to a larger version finding that it is not exactly scalable. Not enough available data channels? I'll just drop in a few I/O expanders. What the ...? Why is my processor churning and the entire project attempting to vibrate itself to dust now? D'oh! Stupid slow chip frequency! Just one of the many joys of discovery in the quest to make cool stuff.

Omgosh haha You are funny :-) Thank you for your video but with flowers in resin, the water in them reacts with the resin and does yucky stuff. Flowers need to be dried before put in to resin :-) Artsy Madwoman is great for tips on KZbin

You should of just poured it over the cracks the first time it happened I had the same thing happen to me and I just pour the next layer and it was all good .so that’s what you do 😉
