One thing people forget is that making an album gets really expensive, real quick. So especially for artists that are just starting, putting out an EP first helps to get recognition and fanbase to justify dropping so much money recording, producing, mixing and mastering an album. That's why you'll notice many of your favourite bands started their careers by releasing an EP before their first album

K-Pop Mini albums, as much as I love them, can be really really confusing when you don’t pay attention. As in, they’re labelled ‘the _st/nd/rd mini album’, so it’s really weird to see ‘the 1st album’ on a release. Anyway, one of my favourite non-k-pop EPs is ‘In A Beautiful Place Out In The Country’. 20 mins of perfection.

I think the reason that I, as an artist, put out EPs as opposed to LPs for now, is because I'm a little scatterbrained when it comes to ideas. I'll get an idea, find that I can carry that for a couple songs, but then find another idea I could fit it to. I love the flexibility I can have with my creativity, being able to have a somewhat diverse discography at a very early stage in my art. I love your perspectives on the art form, gives me a little more insight into how others might see my work.

for me the main difference between an ep and a lp isn't the number of songs on it, but really just the overall length of the project. if it's under 30 minutes it's probably an ep
@FreshFindsPod Жыл бұрын
I usually think of an EP as like 3 - 5 or 6 songs and less than 25 minutes. In the DIY/independent rock and Metal scene I think EPs play a very important roll, because they can be made relatively quickly to keep people's attention with new releases but still allow you to release a "project" that's cohesive, where the songs compliment each other.

I always define singles, EPs/mini albums, and albums by runtime as tracks always vary in length as you pointed out at the end. 30min is an album. Although it gets a bit confusing when artists market smaller projects as albums (looking at you, Joji) but then again, and EP is really just a small album, like a small photo album is a small collection of photos.

Really cool video! 👍 One thing I do want to point out is that, if I remember the definition correctly, it's either 7 songs or 26 minutes or less (which is why Green Day's Father of All is an album because it squeeked by with 10 seconds to spare). This becomes an interesting case with something like the NIN discography because if you look at singles like Head Like A Hole, that borders on like, 40 minutes and it's still seen as a "single". Honestly, an entire essay can be given on how odd the NIN discography is with its Halo numbering system...

Kendrick Lamar’s self titled EP is *15* tracks long. He even brings up how “revolutionary” the idea is on The Heart Part 2. Also, a bit surprised you didn’t bring up Paradise by Lana Del Rey at all. The project has 8 songs, but it was meant to be “extras” for Born To Die, creating the album’s “Paradise Edition”. The normal EP has the 8 songs, but then the Paradise Edition of BTD has one extra song along with all of Paradise. So, technically, it has nine tracks. But, no one really considers it her second album like they do Ultraviolence. She released it the same year as Born To Die, and, as I implied, it’s basically an add on project with semi-similar production, not its own separate project. But, like how My Dear Melancholy is home to Call Out My Name, one of Abel’s biggest hits, Paradise contains Ride, which many consider to be one of Lana’s best songs. It’s also one of her most ambitious projects music video wise. Ride’s music video is very well praised in the fandom for its monologue by Lana that cuts before and after the main song part of the video. She also made a half hour short film named Tropico that complied three other songs from the project, along with plenty of monologuing and dialogue.

my favorite example of an odd ep is the beach boys' "mount vernon and fairway: a fairy tale", which was packaged as a bonus ep with the initial release of their album holland. unlike most eps, this is a 20 minute long story with original music both as the background of the narration and as little in-betweens, there's some real gems in there and honestly i think it might be just a little bit better than the album it was a bonus to lol

I feel like the move to streaming really turbocharged EPs. People have been complaining about "the death of the album" for a while now (free future video idea), and EPs arguably fill a nice role of being something cohesive and meatier, with more staying power than a single, without having to release a full album. But, really, it's all just a name that means nothing. Slayer's 'Reign in Blood' fit on one side of a cassette and it was an album, and I have plenty of EPs in my library that are just as long. Then you have Bring Me the Horizon's 'Post Human: Survival Horror' which isn't called an album, nor an ep, but a 'commercial release' whatever that even means???
@strupp1 Жыл бұрын

In my opinion, an ep can be an amazing way to test out a different sound, without having to worry about your fans thinking "i can't believe these guy's changed their sound" or just to release your best tracks without any filler. A great example of an album i think should've been an ep is AJJ's "The Bible 2" Some of their best songs are on that album, but only about 7 on their are really worth anything. With the rest being either really forgettable, or really boring. So anyways, an ep can be a good way to release music without having to worry about people seeing your album as filler. Or thinking that you've changed your sound completely, in case your fans don't like it. A good way to test the waters of sort

I've been listening to the full discography of my favourite Vocaloid producer lately, and it's made me aware of a concept in Japan called the doujin album, or indie album. As the name implies they're usually self-published (even if the artist is actually with a label), are usually produced at home, and are typically shorter than an album, but are longer than an EP - 5 to 7 or even 8 songs, with runtimes of 30 to 40 or even 50 minutes, are pretty typical for them. They're typically sold on specialized music sites, on the artist's own website, or physically at conventions like Comiket. They're pretty neat! I like them; they can contain some real bangers, and because they're at least more substantial than an EP, you don't feel like you're missing out if one of them stays confined to a doujin album. They do lack the full cohesion that makes a proper major album release, however. In a way you could just think of them as *B I G E P*

What makes it even more confusing is that there are some EP's that are almost an hour long such as Car Seat Headrest's - How to Leave Town, and albums such as Jethro Tull's - Thick as A Brick being comprised of 2 parts of the same song, being 43 minutes, however it's considered to be an LP. There really is no way to discern which is what and what is which. The term is used very loosely and for rare cases where an EP is longer than an LP, I think it's better to not worry about the terminology that much.

Extended Plays really just are, mini projects like you've explained throughout the whole video: To me, and like everybody else, they're the middle ground between Singles and Albums, but, spiritually? They'll be really well thought out and much work put into just like an album and it'll only be a couple of relating trax, so I think EPs just are when a producer doesn't really want to make an album, but they don't really wanna make a single either. And yes, 7:02 - 7:05, as an artist I am listening to you and that makes perfect sense, 7+ Is really iffy just to call that, "Extended", might aswell just call it an album and leave: no difference really..
