Favourite ever Derby here. Back in 1986 Dancing Brave was absolute set fair to win but from such a long way back it was going to be a massive ask. He swept past them all in the home straight but Shahrastani would NOT be denied and just held on for a supreme win. Thrilling stuff!!!

Slip Anchor will always be my favourite Derby. Steve Cauthen gave him a masterful ride.

i wasnt born when dancing brave ran but i do know if that aint a shocking ride "hold up" horse or not coming wide and that distance to make up your taking the piss as a jockey on the best horse.. though seen regularly on day to day racing now.. "mugs game"

It's hard to imagine there will ever be a bigger certainty before the Derby than Shergar, but I always thought Slip Anchor was more impressive, he had much tougher opposition, but where is Golden Fleece's breath taking win in 1982 and the “I can't believe he got beat” El Gran Senor Derby of 1984 and the underrated Reference Point in 1987... and what about Troy... Where's Troy ????

I did see Shergar . I had bet Shergar in his pre Derby trials at Sandown and Chester and took 4/1 ante-post about him winning The Derby . It won at odds on 10/11 . Shergar was very impressive but it won The Derby in a very slow time and against one of the worst fields ever . Shergar was a very good horse but he was essentially a galloper who liked to stretch and dictate his fields . He did not possess the raw speed and acceleration of other great Derby winners like Sea Bird , Nijinsky , Mill Reef or Sea The Stars . Lester Piggott , who won The Derby 9 times , and who rode Shergar twice , was asked in a recent BBC interview if Frankel was the greatest horse he had seen . He said no , Sea Bird is the best horse I've ever seen ; then Ribot , then Frankel .

@@ThefightingCelt Quite right sir 'Shergar in my view was a little over rated and as u indicate a sub standard field however my late dad always said there is no such statement as A bad Derby??...Mill Reef n Nijinsky were Supreme winners ?.Sea bird was before my time sir but the footage does indicate a Super Star ,The late Julian Wilson said it is difficult to compare different decades ..Golden Miller n Arkle r compared but extremely difficult to say as the Miller's opposition looked poor ?.?..I possibly at my peril favour The Miller 'how about you sir...Kind regards Glynn n Greetings from Stourbridge West Midlands

Golden Miller was the best in his era but the opposition he faced was poor , as you indicated . For me , Arkle was the greatest NH horse of all ; he had no equal .
