what I want to know is how this scanner performs scanning documents (mainly A4 size). The focus of all those reviews is on the photo scanning.

I'm sure this fact can be found on the Epson spec sheet on their website. The reason for "photo scanning" review is that I am a photo restoration artist and was reviewing it from that perspective :), of a person who deals with a lot of photos.

@@andresmsuarez5718 Interesting. You would need to contact Epson for more information i guess.

You mentioned the need for it to be near a computer because of the length of USB cable? But I thought this was a wireless device (and I did think that's what the W stood for in its model name?). It also has a wireless logo on it by the looks of it?. So my questions is - Is this a wireless scanner, or does it have to be connected via USB?

Yes it is Wi-Fi. Ive not tried the Wi-fi. Just assumed then tons of photos sent over Wi-Fi might be slower than down the cable. I could be wrong. but here is how to set it up files.support.epson.com/docid/cpd5/cpd55191.pdf just search Wi-Fi if you want to use it Wi-Fi

There's no problem using a USB 2-cable. USB 2 is more than sufficient for this kind of scanning. Even if you are scanning at 600 dpi. It's more important to have a fast computer to process the images after scanning. With my old and slow PC it took just as long to process the images to scan them. With a new PC it's just takes a couple of seconds. And if your images are glued into the album I would rather use a flatbed scanner If you have one. Taken into the account time used to separat the images it will be faster with a flatbed and a software that automatically cuts out the images. And with less risk of damaging the images. Not to mention you add a lot of dust and fingerprints. Even using gloves will add dust, so it's important to wipe you images before scanning them. If you have the negatives I would rather scan those since you get a lot better images with no dust. There are lots of laboratories that scans negatives and for price of the Epson you can pay for a awful lot of negatives :) But as a owner of both the flatbed Epson V700 and the Epson 680w I must admit that I'm using the 680 most of the time, especially since it's great to scan not only images but also documents, up to 70 sheets in one go.

You should read my full review of the unit on the blog at www.image-restore.co.uk/blog/epson-fastfoto-ff-680w-scanner-review/ With software that automatically cuts out the image you cannot be sure to scan each image at the optimised setting for specific uses. All you get is one DPI for all and one scanner setting for all. With flatbeds in my work I will use a different setting for each of the images scanned. This creates optimum levels of resolution and tone for each one. Something you, of course, cannot do with the 680W. If you read my review it also has its idiosyncrasies that you need to be aware of. :)
