Great review. I have owned the LS12000 for almost a year and having it calibrated I can tell you "Natural" works great for SDR content and either "Bright Cinema" or "Dynamic" for HDR content. Black levels are amazing in Dynamic however it does come at the expense of some loss of detail and black crush. I prefer Bright Cinema as it tracked better when calibrating to Calman specs.

You should introduce that projectors wont look as good on camera as a TV. When I bought mine, I was hesitating a lot, because projector on camera look very washed out compared to a TV on camera. I know both wont look as good like if I was in person, but it gives you an idea. I went for a projector, and damn, no regret, it look 100x better in person than any review on all youtube.

Hello, at last a truly objective comparison between these two models, bravo! As soon as the LS12000 was released, I noticed in several online tests a kind of bashing about the LS11000, because of its low contrast compared to the LS12000, forgetting that the price difference is not a detail for everyone. 😄 As you say, I'm sure that the LS11000 is perfectly suitable for a dark room, and that the difference in contrast between the two models is bearable. I'm not interested in the TW9400 because it's technically too close to my TW7000 and I'm no longer interested in 3D. My budget doesn't allow me to buy the LS12000 simply to improve contrast. It'll be the LS11000, my choice is made, thank you!
@georgepopescu1327 Жыл бұрын
The real (native contrast) of those units are something like this: LS11000 just under 2000:1 and LS 12000 4000:1 which is comparable with UB 5050. It is very noticeble in a bat cave, in dark scenes only. In a regular room the contrast difference will be eaten up by the reflexions anyway so you won't notice much. For comparison most DLP's have around 1000:1 or even less.
@tbob2224 Жыл бұрын
The older 1080p DLP's and some more recent ones like the HT2060 are actually more like 1500-2000:1. A lot of the longer throw 4K DLP shifters are in the 500-600:1 range though, but an iris saves some like the BenQ HT3550 or HT5550. There are some that measure higher with no dynamic contrast like the Vivitek HK2288 (2000:1) and HK2200 (1600:1), but they are certainly the exception. The JmGO Ultra also measures about 1600:1 but it is missing any kind of optical zoom or lens shift. I'm not sure about the LS12000 but my 6050UB can measure close to 10:000:1 on the most aggressive iris setting and even higher on the auto iris (which I do not use).

Native as in native resolution. There are very few 4k projectors that use a native 4k chip and the ones that do are all high end units.
@robinv1485 Жыл бұрын
This is incorrect, both projectorcentral, avs and other reliable sources measured the ls12000 at 6000:1 to 9000:1 depending on the throw ratio. The black floor is similar to the 5050ub, but the intrascene contrast is way better. The ls11000 is a downgrade in everyway but resolution imo to the 5050ub. I'm not even sure how Chris got such good results on screen, it measures badly, worse blacks, worse contrast, better lumens I guess.

Great review. But, I have a question. What happens when you reach the 20, 000 lazer light life? Does it become a giant paper weight or can it be replaced? I have a 5040ub and I put around 4,500 hours per year. Looking to upgrade.
@michel2641234 Жыл бұрын
I have the same question! Yes after around 20000hr you need to replace the projector, the lazer is not replaceable. But even if you replace the projector after 5 years it’s not that bad because you do not have to buy a lamp every year (2000$ for 5 lamps) and the luminosity is always perfect. So I will go for the LS110000 or LS12000 but I waiting for a price drop! If I can get it at around 4000$can for the LS11000 or 5000$can for the LS12000

@@michel2641234 wow…that’s a lot of money for lamps. In the last 5 years I’ve replaced the lamp 4 times on my epson 5040ub. I pay $140 per lamp at pureland supply. I have two saved calibration settings. New bulb and half life. Gods honest truth I don’t noticed the difference once I switch to the half life calibration. I switch between 2,000 and 2,500. I use my projector like it’s a tv. $140 every year is around .38 cents per day. I think I’m upgrading to the 5050ub.

no 3d, no iris and no dynamic tone mapping as well as heavier 5k series look alike that becomes an expensive paper weight after 20k hours - what an upgrade for only a thousand $ more in exchange for a few more pixels that youd have to be 5 inches away from the screen to even notice! Cant wait to go ahead and ignore it while staying with my 5050 that recently passed a total of 30k hours with all of the bulbs in total still costing me only half of generational msrp difference and works the same as on the day i brought it home after my 5040 bit the infamous PSU dust. Really hope Epson force themselves to release a worthy upgrade by the time my beloved 5050 retires, otherwise hello JVC i am the guy that hates switching brands so be staying with you unless you do the "Epson"

Hey Chris, love the channel. Question. I have been looking around at the AVS Classifieds for a used Epson. If you were going used for your first projector, would the 5050ub at around 2k still be a good buy? Or should I hold off and wait for a used 11000 to pop up? I think I have seen a few go for around 3k on there recently.
@robinv1485 Жыл бұрын
Just in case someone sees this and is wondering the same thing. 2k for a 5050ub is not a good price. In europe you can still get tw-9400 which is the 6050ub, new, with warranty for 1800€. So second hand, maybe 1200-1500? I still think it's a great projector and beats everything up until the 5k price point. One thing people don't often realize because they come from tvs is that Clarity is not just resolution. Contrast increases the perceived resolution or sharpness of an image. So it doesn't matter if a projector is 4k when the 5050ub with 3x pixelshift has 10x more contrast in that pricepoint right? The difference for the ls11000 is don't even bother, its a downgrade. For the ls12000 you get a bump in resolution which is noticeable, better intrascene contrast, and way more lumens to work with. If you can't go for the ls12000, sony or jvc, the 5050/6050ub are still the best bang for buck rn.

Great review as always Chris. 1. The Epson models us a 3LCD chip laser architecture, is that similar to the Triple laser designs found in the new UST projectors like the Formovie. From your observation which design looks better. 2. Im not sure if this is a new feature in these new projectors. I once considered purchasing a motorized anamophic lens to get rid of the surrounding black bars on cinema-scope ratio movies. Is there a new mode in these projectors that will remove those bars when viewing a wide angle projected movie. This epson appears to do just that from your demostration. If so , is this feature exclusive to EPSON projectors. 3. The lack of 3D is frustrating. I cannot get rid of my old bulb projector until these companies wise up and listen to the demand for 3DMode. Makes no sence why they would exclude that feature. Grrrrr. Thanks
@ChrisMajestic Жыл бұрын
1. These are two completely different technologies. 3LCS technology is basically specific to Epson and it’s the system they use to display the image which is used in conjunction with a lighting source. So 3LCD projectors can use a basic lamp, LED, or lasers. Other UST projectors use a DLP system as opposed to 3LCD. I did a video about this some time ago. Here’s a link: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fpe9noaqedSMaKs 2. Yes an anamorphic lens can be used with Epson projectors and would accomplish what you want. 3. Yeah the lack of 3D is a bummer.
@brucesmith1754 Жыл бұрын
@@ChrisMajestic Thank you Chris!
@supergrissi Жыл бұрын
@@brucesmith1754 I don't think you got a full answer to your question number 2. What you saw in the demostration was the use of "Lens Memory", that is not exclusive to Epson! It is meant for those with an 21:9 screen. What it is doing is essentially just zooming the picture, so the black bars are showed outside the actual screen, which you manually can do on any projector by using the zoom or physically moving the projector further away. Here it is done just by pushing a button, thats why it is called: "Lens Memory"! What you will acheive, when using an anamorphic lens, is a brighter and better picture, because you are able to use all the projectors available pixels instead of just cutting them off by not showing the black bars on the screen...

@@georgepopescu1327 @Chris Majestic I understand that the LS 11000 is a higher tier product ( the Linus review a while back made it look amazing ) but the price is more than double the cost of the UHD 55 ( regular price $ 1799 ) . (this weekend it is on sale for $1199). Is it really twice the performance, 50% more ect. Chris does such great reviews but I would like see a different type of video where he talks more about the actual cost to performance metrics, is it really worth it. I personally had one that I bought for a previous sale price of $1499. I had to replace 2 separate UHD 60 units that one had a faulty hdmi port and the other developed dead pixels and started to flash intermittently. These two units were my first non extended warrantee systems and I learned my lesson. So now I only buy from sources with reputable warrantee programs that last 4-5 years. It seems like if I have a problem it is always right after the manufacture warranty expires at 2000 hrs. Any way I feel the HDR movie experience and gaming experience on the UHD 55 are amazing at those sale prices. The learning curve comes in at understanding which HDMI port supports what type of features ( side note read the manual ). However I do wonder if the $3000 tier group projectors like the UHZ45 and or UHZ 50 are much more impressive. The only benefit I see in reviews is that laser light projectors do not suffer from the bulbs output dropping over time.

if you are talking about Epson's problems with displaying 24p content than yes, motion interpolation implemented in those new laser units is a superior solution compared to the older models

It's a shame that these don't have 3D if they did I would have bought one. So that would put a lot of people off buying this projector. I don't understand why they did not add 3D🤷♂️
@Mr.HotRod Жыл бұрын
Because that would of probably added $40 to $50 extra dollars for the chip to the total price. STUPID Epson. All the Avatar movies alone are still going to be in 3d so it's not dead. Look at all the commenters here who are going away from Epson just on account of this issue.

I don't know what a 3D matrix costs on a video projector, but one of the reasons why 3D TV screens were abandoned was that they were much more expensive to manufacture. I have a 3D video projector and I haven't watched any 3D films for almost two years now, because I'm fed up with losing the brightness and contrast destroyed by 3D glasses. Frankly, you shouldn't deprive yourself of buying a high-performance projector just for one or two interesting 3D films a year. Apart from 3D fans, this is now a secondary criterion in the purchase of a good video projector. 😉

This projector gets the job done pretty well. kzbin.infoUgkxS9P8zTOcmQg-hH0QeUi3dspOLyYgQ6dH Bear in mind it's a mini projector but all things considered the picture quality is pretty good. The attached photo is of the projector projecting onto my white closet doors. I still have not messed with the settings but I can't wait for our first family movie night on a larger scale. If you have issues with volume not working with your firestick, go into volume settings and you will find your solution there.

Gaming - nope! First the lag at 4K 60hz is barely acceptable (and not acceptable to many of us). Second, 4K 120hz which is a must for gaming has the same 19.8 Lag. Third, 2500 Lumens isn't so good as Gamers (vs Movie watching) isn't often done in the Dark, and therefore a min of 3000 Lumens is desired. So yeah, I still await a true 4K at 120hz low Lag high Lumen projector 😞..., and so in the meantime I am sticking with my Optoma UHD38, Thank you! 😁
@ThujanK Жыл бұрын
Um it does do 4k 120hz which effectively makes input lag half of that at 60hz. You just need a 2.1 capable reciever and hdmi 2.1 cable to make it work. Also 2500 "real" laser lumens is great. It's night and day different between 3000lumen projectors that have only 1000 useable lumens in usable (colour accurate) picture modes. Also everyone knows if you plan on doing any serious competitive gaming it should be done on a PC and with a gaming monitor or TV 😂
@johndaddabbo9383 Жыл бұрын
@@ThujanK Nope, it's not going to be HALF of 60hz and instead it is going to equal 60hz (19.8), which isn't terrible for the average Joe, but still unacceptable. So nope, still not for serious (or simply highly skilled) gamers.
@DanRichardson Жыл бұрын
If you're calling anything under 20ms unacceptable you're in the wrong market lol
@johndaddabbo9383 Жыл бұрын
@@DanRichardson Agree 🙂... unacceptable, in that I will simply no longer settle for (19.8). I feel a maximum of 16 ms is required (desired) and therefore like to play it safe and obtain something maxing out at say 12 ms (my UHD38, Vizio 65", and Neo G9 all meeting that requirement). So hence I await a new projector that can do at an absolute minimum 4K 120hz 12ms, although honestly I would like 4K 240hz 8ms. That said, I know plenty of people who's reaction times are so much slower than mine that 19.8 would be 'more than enough' and in fact they are very content playing at anything below 30 ms. So hence in my original comment I stated 'highly skilled'... for one need not be a 'serious' gamer, for which I am not, however if one possess good reaction times and can see/feel the difference, then of course one wants a low enough latency where one cannot see/feel the difference.

For most people 5k , the price of Epson 12000, is already a lot of money. JVC has left the middle market with the new laser series and now are only making high end products. Not many people are willing or can afford to spend the money for a brand new JVC.
@percybedford6266 Жыл бұрын
@ronaldchan3401 not everyone can afford 10k for a JVC laser. JVC has priced themselves out of a lot people's budget. JVC was once considered the smart buy because the were very reasonably priced. That is no longer the case.

Sir, I don't believe a word of this review as I did purchase an optoma Darbee on your recommendation and the projector has overblown colours, it's not bright enough due to colour saturaton, poor contrast, the OSD is the size of my foot on a 100" acreen so no Accessibility and no control over colour level. In plain English, it's shit. You should place E & EO after every review. Thank you/
