As an active P900 user, I rarely use the light feature, so not having that on the P5300 doesn't bother me. I ordered my P5300 a few days ago and will get one supposedly mid January. I am only concerned with the lack of icc profiles at the moment.
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
The profiles should start appearing, but here in the UK for example, Epson had two machines - one is sitting in my kitchen ;-) I believe it's off to a UK paper supplier at the end of the month... Now, I've not tested this in detail, but I've made quite a lot of P5300 profiles including many of the papers I tested with the P700/900 and the profiles seem very similar. I'll need to do a lot more testing to see, but the fact the P5300 has the same inks and printhead as the P900 is suggestive... ??

I don't see how it worked for you.... It still had a piece of blue tape on the front, and the instructions for my Epson printers have always explicitly said to remove all of the blue tape before using it! 😉 No matter, very nice review which will have me seeing all of the drawbacks of my SC-P900 every time I use it!

Ah, it just looks like the same tape... ;-) This one won't print DVD's if that's of any help? ...

I must be the only person still using the venerable Epson 3880 which has served me well over the years. The biggest frustration is the flaky Epson Printer driver which no longer allows presets to be reliably saved (Mac OSX on M1 Mac studio). Or for that matter even basic Print Settings like media type resolution .......that now eed to be dialled I f or each print! This applies to Lightroom, Photoshop and DXO 8 and appears to be an issue between Apple (OSX) and Epson who gave lost interest in older printers.......I am using the latest driver and properly uninstalled previous versions. At some stage I will need to replace the 3880 but sense the P900 (P906) here in Australia) is not as well made albeit more modern. Having just purchased a Fuji 100Sii I am interested also in printing larger but I am not a professional or daily printer. Should the 5300 still be on the shortlist? while it is more expensive and a heavy beast I sense it would provide a very satisfying experience.
@KeithCooper3 күн бұрын
Don't rush to blame Epson for that... Apple caused all sorts of print issues. It's one reason, one of my work machines is still on 10.15 - Epson are vastly better than Canon in this respect. Yes - the 5300 is an excellent printer ;-)

Looking forward to the full review on the p5300, when I first printed on the p5000 with in 2 mins I thought this beast will print all day long with out breaking a sweat so if this is similar people will love it and the roll feed is just a joy to use would be hard for me to be with out it. Be nice to see how the p5300 stacks up against my trusty p5000 regrading print quality but that being said you have kind of answered my question as you have already done the 900 vs p5000 vid. Cheers Keith.

Thanks! This is the printer I've been watching most closely as an upgrade from my ancient Epson 4880 (which, oddly enough, has been behaving wonderfully lately after some difficult months). One thing I never cared for on the 4880 was the sheet feeding - it has always been poor. I had hoped to do some prints on double-sided photo paper, but the feed quality is bad enough that it is a hit-or-miss proposition -mostly miss. Can you show something on sheet paper feeding, and maybe double-sided? I've tried feeding card stock for double-sided prints and no luck. Also, wanted to mention that I do a LOT of smaller prints on roll paper on my 4880. I use the ImagePrint RIP software with their Cut-It-Out option. It encodes the print somehow for cutting, and then I run it through my Graphtec CE7000-60 cutting plotter and it cuts out the prints for me. It makes printing, say, 100 8x10s or 200 5x7s a breeze...
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
I will try double sided - it's never easy though. I've not tried it on the P5000. I have a box of something DS around somewhere ;-) At last - a current use for imageprint.. ;-)

@@KeithCooper Hah! I used to get so frustrated trying to get anything close to accurate colors while printing. ImagePrint completely revolutionized that and I have been able to get consistent results on whatever paper I'm using. Windows color management has come a long way since then, I guess, and Epson's workflow as you use it seems pretty good. I can't begin to tell you how much paper and ink I used to waste, and how many late nights were required, to try to get decent results. IP changed that entirely, and now, with their cutting program, I am happy with the combination. I don't know of any other way to do that... I DO appreciate your sense of humor, though... and thank you for your work on these videos. Excellent stuff!
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
Thanks - I used to use IP with my Epson 9600, but that was ~15 yrs ago and before I started all my colour management work and testing. The cutting stuff is interesting though. I've lot's more print example videos to do... ;-)

Thanks for the review, will grab this hopefully this year! In using your BW test print, beyond doing so to make sure I can make a successful print, would you recommend printing the test print on a starter set of papers (across different finishes)? I imagine so to understand the qualities of each paper and analyze for future prints, such as which one holds shadows and blacks really well based on the portion of the test print on X paper vs another, etc? As a reference point moving forward, I’m thinking.

Thanks - quite a few more videos and the main review to come... What you suggest is one of the key reasons I created the original test image

I'd be interested in seeing color and B&W test prints(those you've made & shared online) compared between the P5000 & 5300 side by side. And just scenic & architectural prints from 5300 as you showed with the panoramic above. You can show color gamut charts as you did on DPreview i guess, but actual prints tell me more. The proof is in the pudding as they say. Sticky pudding around Christmas time. I guess that white cloth kept the stains off the printer during the holidays. ;-)
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
I'll have a look at that, but not in any video - there just is no way of knowing what it will look like when viewed on YT - I'm reluctant to do it even with photos, since unless the difference is glaringly obvious it won't show, unless I process the images to do so and I'm not happy with that either. Yes - the actual prints are what matter - but they will be in my office... ;-) The printer is mostly food free...

According to Epson's datasheets the P5300 has 180 nozzles per ink channel while the P5000 has 360 nozzles per ink channel. This might effect the print speed. I wonder, if the printing of an image takes longer on the P5300 than on the P5000 while all other settings are equal. Nice image 🙂
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
Yes - the P5000 is faster - I've no timings though The P5000 head is the same one as in the P7000 and P9000 - the P5300 has the same head as the P700/900 Very different target markets ;-)

Ink costs - I standardised to Hahnemühle for sizes from 8*10" or A4 and up, and to Ilford at 5"*7. My ballpark - wild-assed guess - number for ink costs per print (Epson, pigment ink) is that they add about the price of a sheet of paper. Your thoughts? On average.
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
That's reasonable - the Epson PORT software allows for much more detailed costing analysis, but I've not studied it in detail yet. That said, from a commercial POV if ink and paper costs made much difference to the bottom line it tells me that I'm not charging enough for a print. Some print businesses run on much much thinner margins - an area I avoid I'll have a look at some of the software and cost for the written review
@jpdj2715 Жыл бұрын
@@KeithCooper excellent, but there's rabbit holes here, like how much ink a printer uses to keep the pipes clean. I would not go there.
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
For people wanting to track everything to the penny, maybe... It's actually not that difficult to get an idea of the prices/costs/usage over time, but if small ink costs are concern, it says maybe you can't afford the printer ;-) I will have a deeper look at this...

Hi Keith, I would like to ask your advice. My Canon pro 100 printer has not been used for a while. I have got it working again and it prints perfectly for the first four images and then the black fades away. I have cleaned the print head and every time I clean it the printer prints perfectly again for the first three or four images and then the same problem. Do I need a new print head do you think? Any advice would be welcomed as I need to use my printer. Thank you.

It sounds as if there is more of an issue than with just a slight block. I've not used the PRO-100 for many years, since my review... This is the place to ask: www.printerknowledge.com

will you also test software? I use Capture One myself and switched from Lightroom and am very happy with the customization capabilities. I feel like I don't need Photoshop anymore. However, I've never printed with it
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
Not in connection with printing I'm afraid. Even if I used C1 or DxO PL I would still do my preparation for prints of any size in PS. As for printing, I often use EPL in Epson printer tests since it's free and looks the same on Mac and PC - you can export files from processing software and print with it. I've had DxO PL [Optics Pro as was] for many years, and do use it for occasional processing of RAW files. I don't own C1 at all, since they effectively killed the free Fuji version - but then again I rather dislike it from a usability perspective, as with Lightroom

You'll need to check with Epson... However, the print head for the 5300 is the same as the P700/900 so I expect it will be exactly the same.

Hi, The Icc profile you used is it yours or epson ? Are you agitating the ink on your P5000? Have you tested spectoproofer that will bee mounted on P-5000/5300?
@KeithCooper Жыл бұрын
My profile [~3k patches] I take the carts out every few months for a gentle shake - depends on how much I've been using it. The Spectroproofer for the P5000 is the one I tested for my SP4900 review - not much software supported it at the time. The P5300 cannot be used with a Spectroproofer unit - it is not supported

@@KeithCooper Many thanks for your prompt reply Keith. I look forward to your next video for more information. At present I print borderless A4 and A3+ on a Canon Pro 10s which has been performing very well for years now.
