It has been standard fit on many Honda's for 20 years, the EQ boost system is almost identical to Honda's IMA system (integrated motor assist) which has been available since the year 2000! My CRZ is a 2010 and has Honda's 6th generation IMA system. Mercedes are late to the party but i am sure will have an equally polished product. Might have to swap our W204 for one!
@LandLAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
I'd not looked into IMA in much detail before but every day is a school day! The two systems are very similar - it looks like the main difference is the voltage with some IMA systems running at well over 100v. The CRZ still looks futuristic whenever I see one.

Only M256 with 320 kW get the additional 48V electric supercharger shown at 1:05. The M256 with 270 kW does NOT have this additional 48V electric supercharger. So, it is not all 6-cylinder engines, but just a subset of them.
@maxagent86 Жыл бұрын
Thank you for this important clarification. Do the 270 kW engines have an electric motor powering the turbo air compressor at low rpm's to minimize lag?
@koeniglicher Жыл бұрын
@@maxagent86 No, M 256 E30 DEH LA G R (270 kW) does *not* have the electric turbo air compressor. It only has a conventional turbocharger, entirely driven by exhaust gases. To reduce turbo lag however, the crankshaft of the engine is supported by a an integrated starter generator (ISG). This is a flat electric motor ("EQ Boost" marketing term) with 16 kW of peak power, 250 Nm of peak torque that sits on the crankshaft, acts as a starter, acts as a small generator during deceleration and can add some torque at the low end during acceleration. It is supplied with energy from a 48V battery and stores its generated energy in there as well.

Question can the boost move the car?using e
@LandLAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
Great question! Only under certain conditions - the system is there to run with the engine rather than instead of the engine. However, when slowing to a stop the engine can switch off and the electric motor will move the car for the final few metres before stopping. This is to extend the start/stop time in traffic and help to save fuel even in heavy traffic.

GLE 400d diesel vs 450 petrol which one is better in terms of ride quality, driving experience? Does the EQ boost technology impact on 450 performance? I heard the 450 engine lags and the battery makes whining noise, is this true?
@LandLAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
On paper the two are very close with the same 0-60 time and nearly identical power and combined torque outputs. In terms of ride quality they both have the magic carpet effect on the road surface - all 6-cylinder GLEs in the UK get AIRMATIC air suspension as standard. The instant electric assistance to the drivetrain makes the 450 engine lightning quick to respond. In my experience the addition of EQ Boost improves the driving experience as the engine itself doesn't need to be worked as hard to get going. On the road you will naturally find yourself driving a little bit more economically to maximise what the EQ Boost system can do - like using gliding mode as and where you can. The battery itself is silent, I've never heard any whining from the engine or transmission whilst driving EQ Boost models.

When should we expect to see it on E400d?
@LandLAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
EQ Boost is starting to make its way to the diesel engines. At the moment it is available with the 2.0 litre 4-cylinder only but I hope it arrives on the 6-cylinder engines soon. The in-line 6 diesel is one of my favourite engines at the moment.

Does the 2023 C-43 AMG have EQ boost?
@LandLAutomotive10 ай бұрын
It does - in a slightly different way! As well as having the mild hybrid electric motor, it has an electric exhaust gas turbocharger too. This sees an electric motor mounted on the shaft of the turbine itself to allow it to spin up quicker than you can say EQ boost. This does away with the need for the electric compressor as seen on the six-cylinder engines.

Hi can you please tell me, What is the real world mpg on the Mercedes s500 eq boost? ...
@LandLAutomotive3 жыл бұрын
For the new model, combined fuel consumption is between 32.5 and 34.5 mpg WLTP. OF course this can vary depending on your route and how you drive but on long motorway cruises the in-line 6 is fantastically smooth, quiet and can easily achieve the up to 38.2 mpg figure quoted for high speed sections.

For EQ Boost mild hybrids there is no display for how full or depleted the battery is - the 48v battery is around 0.5 kWh in capacity but it will display whether the system is harvesting or using power underneath the rev counter on the instrument cluster.

1:59, it is there to help the engine. This is a lie. It is to circumvent my patent An Optimum Hybrid Vehicle. I was also fooled by this statement until I realized that it is fooling to burn fuel at low rpm when the electric motor is powerful enough with 15 kW power. Starter motors have less than 5 kW of power. UKIPO is in cohorts with Mercedes in denying my patent, filed in 2013. UKIPO delayed the detailed examination until even 2021, repeating the same queries without addressing my previous answers. I had sent a warning letter in 2021 but didn't realize it was already commercial in 2018 by Mercedes. Even Wikipedia is fooled and lied to. Prior to my patent filed in 2013, all these BAS, BSG, ISM, use small starter motors augmented with other motors, as late as 2011. Even in 2015, there are many Chinese manufacturers using these starter motors only, if their descriptions are correct in those reports. The Optimum hybrid is just by using a more powerful electric motor so that it can crank the engine(ICE), at revolutions around idling (1000 rpm) where the ICE is least efficient. Electric motors on the other hand are more efficient at low powers because they require less battery and thus less weight. The recommended energy capacity is just the kinetic energy of the car at 80 km/h so that this kinetic energy can be stored in the battery, which is the real advantage of larger batteries. I don't understand why prior arts before my patent dis not think of just replacing the starter motors with a bigger one which is essentially what my patent is. This is common in patents especially in the USA such as Omeprazole, by just adding a layer, Rolls Royce, just by changing the angle of the turbine blade. MOPP allows this and I quote every single one of them, around 10. UKIPO never addresses a single one. Instead, repeating the allegations, even as late as 2021. Realizing it was useless to continue with UKIPO, I sent a warning and demand letter demanding crown court intervention like novelty disputes as had happened with my Perpetual Motion Machine Invention. UKIPO never directed me to the Patent Court of the Crown Court so I was clueless. UKIPO withdrew from that case after I had successful files my argument in a huge bundle full of cases. I didn't sue because of my ignorance or fooled by adverts by Mercedes and others about these mild-hybrids of not turning the crank using electric motors only. This is not as efficient as full hybrids but cheaper to produce and incorporate into existing ICE. This is a commercial consideration so missed by prior arts but the latest judgement in UK court allows commercial consideration in inventions. I designed this patent for poor nations which is why I didn't file in the USA and EU patent offices. (this editor has a Grammer checker, adding the, which I am not confident is correct). I was completely wrong. It is a pity that we do not have a patent to protect this technology. But it can be considered a gift to humanity like Mercedes ESC(electronic stability control). But this blatant theft and lying don't help. In Malaysia it is valid. In Sabah, time for invalidation has lapsed. In Malaysia, it is vague but I am well prepared but I need to update myself on self-litigation as I did against UKIPO. This time completely independent without any guidance from UKIPO.

Great question - it's all in the interest of increasing efficiency whilst reducing emissions. As a bit of a dinosaur I do like a good engine so the addition of something that boosts performance and fuel economy is a winner for me personally. Similar mild hybrid systems are starting to appear across the market with Audi being one of the first to introduce 48v systems with the SQ7 TDi. Our friends from BMW and JLR are also introducing mild hybrids across their combustion engine range.
