I drive a 2022 GLS450. #1) How does the 48v battery get charged?, #2) Does the 48v battery operate any other vehicle functions other than the start-up assist (from a stop when the engine cuts off) ) and the mild acceleration boost? #3) Where is the 48v battery located in the vehicle and does it require regular replacement like a 12v starter battery? #4) Is the 48v battery starting the engine or does the 12v battery perform that initial task? #5) Lastly, how can I tell the percentage charge on the 48v battery and the 12v battery? (Similar to a cell phone)? .....and what is your recommended "best way" to keep the GLS450 batteries fully charged for an occasional use vehicle? Thanks.....great channel and excellent videos and narrative comments and instruction.

Hey Larry, don’t worry with a Mild Hybrid you don’t need to worry about any of those things! 🤓 The car just like the starter motor battery will optimise and control all of it. Because there are no functions other than boost and switching the engine more often, you can’t view the percentage of the battery as it is so small.

Thanks for the explanation. For plug-in hybrid cars - the use case shown in the video with entering motorway: engine is not running and suddenly it is revved at 4k RPMs and higher - oil is cold, engine is cold, isn't this going to impact engine longenvity?
@npoleary
@npoleary 7 ай бұрын
No worries! 🤓 Plug-in hybrids are designed with this in mind, long gone are the days where you have to “warm up” an engine. It’s advisable to drive an engine straight away. However of course with plug-in hybrids there is an element to driving when say you’re on electric and go to overtake someone, this can cause the engine to fire up and as you said go up to higher RPM from a cold start. Car manufacturers have loads of engine tech in place to help as well as varying viscosity of oils to help with lubrication in cold engine starts. Of course I would never race a cold engine but as soon as the engine starts, it’ll start to warm up within seconds. If you did race it, the car will limit how much power you can use anyway to protect it myself until it’s warmed up. And to further add, if it’s really cold you might have used Pre-Entry Climate Control which will warm the car up anyway! 🤓

Hey Nick - I'm thinking of going hybrid of some sort and your video explained it very well! The plug in hybrid does seem to be the best for bridging the gap. Question: How long should a C class battery generally last and how much is it to purchase a new one? And I guess the car can run fine if there is no juice in the battery. Cheers!
@npoleary
@npoleary Жыл бұрын
Hey Weppe, thank you! Glad you enjoyed the video! Plug-in Hybrids and All-Electric cars are designed to last as long as Internal Combustion Engines (petrol & diesel). The only difference is that Mercedes warranty in the UK is for 3 years, but the battery is for 6 years on a Plug-in Hybrid. All-Electric cars have longer warranties such a 8 years or even 10 years. It doesn’t mean they stop working but they’ll keep going and going. It’s good to factor in though that as a battery ages (just like any Lithium-ion battery) the achievable range will go down as it gets older. Believe it or not though, there are still first generation Nissan Leafs still on the road!” From years ago! In terms of a price for a battery, sadly I wouldn’t know, today’s cost would be quite high (probably the same price as an engine) but by the time anyone would even need to consider something like that, due to mass production, it’ll hopefully go down slightly.

I would worry with plug-in hybrid, you'd need to do enough regular distance mileage to keep the petrol/diesel engine in good shape? So how often in practice would you need to do a Poole to London type distance? If I do a daily commute that is feasible on electric, and a longer drive a couple of times a month, is that enough or would mild hybrid or pure EV suit that profile better?
@npoleary
@npoleary 2 жыл бұрын
Hey projectruth, plug-in hybrids are an awesome concept, they basically convert some of your existing journeys into electric but without going into a fully electric car. Depending on the model, some will cover anything from 12 miles (first generation ones), to 27 miles to even as high as 60 miles (depends on how new it is how large the battery is). Sounds like that would work! 🤓 If most of your journeys are local and you can plug in, you’ll basically have almost a mini electric car but then when you go further, it’ll use the engine.

@npoleary
@npoleary 3 ай бұрын
So basically to drive on electric you need to plug them in 🤓 But they do charge a small tiny bit when you brake. It’s only a really small amount though so won’t actually add noticeable miles if that makes sense. It just trickles electricity back in 🤓

Hi. The new C class hybrid with 100km range of electric, should I consider one over regular C300? I'm quite worry about running out of battery charge because I frequently have unplanned long drives, 200km+, and oftenly 1 roadtrip per month. Furthermore, I live far from home.

Hey PoletheCat, ah I’ve covered a Plug-in Hybrid here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i163pJZprdWIZsk In a nutshell, it runs on electric first and when that runs out it simply switches over to the engine. What you described was a perfect scenario for a plug-in hybrid. Shorter journeys most of the time and then the odd time you need to do an unplanned drive, it’ll simply switch over automatically and will function just like a normal car. The only difference, when you want to (maybe when you’re back) simply plug it in and charge it up again 🤓

What happens if you run out of battery during driving? You can drive in gas engine till you can charge it ?
@npoleary
@npoleary 3 ай бұрын
If you run out of battery, you probably won’t even notice. The engine will just come on automatically. The cool thing is with plug-in hybrids is that you plug-in when you can / when you want to and you get cheaper motoring. But if you forgot or can’t, you’ll just run on fuel instead. Plug-in Hybrids need to be plugged in to charge though, the engine braking charges a little bit it’s minuscule. To actually drive on electric you need to charge it via a plug or public charge point.

If you have a service plan (I have one on my car) the price is exactly the same for servicing 🤓 Even for plug-in hybrids too! 👍🏼 In terms of tech, yes I’m sure it is quite complex in the engine bay but luckily I don’t ever need to look in there! Apart from when topping up the windscreen wash 😅

The big issue is the kind of journeys you do. I am looking at purchasing two family cars at the moment, and the issue I can foresee is that whilst a plug-in is great for short distances, daily commute, etc., it appears really to suffer (due to redundant weight) on the longer journeys, which I'm likely to be doing once a week. I think the solution is going to be one all-electric, and one mild hybrid. The plug-in seems to fall between two stools. Interested in others' thoughts.
@npoleary
@npoleary 2 ай бұрын
If most of your journeys are going to be done on shorter journeys and you can plug-in then great! However if you rarely can plug it in, then a plug-in hybrid might not be the best option. If most journeys are done on electric, then that one you do per week is on fuel then that might still be okay!

So with a PHEV....if you are driving and run out of charge on your batteries, the gas engine takes over. While the gas engine is running (to get you the rest of the way on your journey), does the battery get a charge while you are burning fuel?
@npoleary
@npoleary 12 күн бұрын
It’ll slowly add a little bit of power but would never be enough to charge it fully hence the name “plug-in hybrid”. But as you brake, it does offer a bit of recuperation via the brakes to charge it up a little.
