This is one of my favorite videos on EQ because you're doing it in real time showing the process of how you reached your conclusions. Love it! Thanks for all the awesome advice!

Invaluable as always, thanks Matthew! I really like your point about providing content to support people so they don't feel weird about doing certain moves in a mix. Beginners get taught so much to protect them from themselves while they train their ears. I spent about a year learning that I shouldn't use too much eq and compression followed by ~3-4 to unlearn that and get comfortable with the fact that some stuff just needs an absolute TON of work.

It took me a long time to unlearn being overly cautious. I still struggle with that from time to time.

Thank you for this video! It's nice to see this process in real time...I used to feel I was doing something wrong if I addressed on problem and new issues showed up... knowing that it's totally normal and to keep working at it is my biggest take away

Great approach. It would be cool to see how u would EQ a “bedroom” recording that would be typical of what most new engineers would be working with. A less polished and, and as you said, “good vocal”. Thanks for all the 💎

I love Pro Q3. It's my absolute go to for when I'm wanting to attenuate frequencies. Admittedly, I use it for the analyzer 100% of the time, but it's only for the sake of time. I usually hear the frequencies I don't like, like you did in this video, and then I use the Pro Q to find it quickly. Sometimes I will also check the frequencies that look "extra" on the analyzer, but I only attenuate them if they're actually a problem. I do like your method of using your ears only, but I'm not that confident. lol
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
As long as it's a short cut for what you hear, I think analyzer are fine. I'm a little hesitant about "check the frequencies that look 'extra'" - I think the temptation is to create problems that aren't there, even if being deliberate about only attenuating them if they're actually a problem. Proceed with caution!

@@WeissAdvice I agree. I think it’s just an ocd thing/newb habit I haven’t kicked, but don’t worry, I always use my ears at the end of the day. I do find myself doing it less and less, because it’s a time waster. I’ve been really concentrating on moving quickly lately and not second guessing myself so much. As always, thanks for the amazing content!

I'm definitely guilty of going into every frequency that sounds off when I started out just looking for one problem area. I like the SSL EQ's bc of their ability to help me fish out the frequencies I'm looking for. But another bonus is that you can only have one choice per frequency range! Do you ever use eq's on a send (more like parallel compression) for vocals, or is it always a thing you place directly on the track you want eq'd and at %100?
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
For this kind of EQ work, it's always as an insert. I do use EQs on send channels, but it's always in conjunction with something else like parallel compression or distortion. I have done the crossover thing, splitting a track into multiple frequency ranges Andrew Scheps style - but it's not really my thing.
LOLOLOLOL. Took me a sec to hear it, then I couldn't unhear it.
@sqguitar Жыл бұрын
Great video Matthew, as always! Can I ask - do you also add EQ after you have applied compression? Especially if using an analog emulation which may add harmonics or emphasise frequencies that don't sit right in the mix?
@WeissAdvice Жыл бұрын
Sometimes tone changes after compression and a bit of EQ is necessary.

The process is kind of like straightening a picture frame: adjust, step back and look, no too much to one side, re-adjust, step back again check, finer and finer adjustments until it is perfectly level.
