Lucy, you really are a most charming and engaging presenter. Sadly, as a non-horse person, most of this blog is utterly irrelevant to me. Yet you put you put it all together so beautifully that I almost wish I owned a horse just to apply your equestrian money saving tips. Thank you for sharing so generously with us - Bridget Jones watch-out…!

I’ve been hunting on Facebook groups for second hand supplies: smashing good deals on rugs which I know are going to get muddy so prefer not to buy new! I also made sure to find a feed store that offers a loyalty program so I get 5% off all my purchases and everything 10th purchase is 20% off!

Yes 100% with you on the rug front! I also have cheap no fill rain sheets that I put over the top of their turnouts to save them ripping their better quality rugs, helps keep them watertight too!

Saving money at shows is a big help too! It can take 4-6 bags of shaving at $7-8 a bag to fill a stall your horse will use for maybe 2 days! I can fill a stall with 1 bale of straw for less than $10!

Thank you so much for this Lucy! some of the KZbinr's recently have been unwatchable for me personally, seeming to be completely blind to the fact there is a cost of living crisis! Loved this video! x

ive found a massive amount of hay/haylage is lost when you are supplementing it in the field and you just place it on the floor or on hay feeders that allow for a lot of it to spill out. I found that "slow feeders" or placing the hay in hay nets inside the feeder radically reduces the amount that is lost. (lost= falls on the ground, gets stepped on, wet, dirty, muddy... = horse wont eat it)

Love these! I despite waste. My parents grew up in the depression & really drilled into me to NOT waste, to close doors, turn off lights, by used when appropriate & appreciate every day. What a difference it makes. Thanks for all your great tips!!

A note on the hay wasting. It's like they know the price of hay went up and insist on wasting it. my mustang likes to makes it her bedding.

@@footluceeventing I feel it SO hard. I went from a $8 bale to $11. Shes just out there looking at me like “ you know I’m worth all this” and she’s right 🤣 so much for a former wild horse roughing it though anything. Thriving in her domesticated life

Didn’t think straw was in vogue anymore, (!) but it’s SO much cheaper, if suitable for your horse. Good vlog Lucy.

@@footluceeventing I’m defo going to look into it more. I’ve have 5 horses all on different diets so it’s very costly. Lucky all mine live out all year round as that’s what they prefer it’s much better for my older horses who get a little stiff at times due to old age. I got to say I really enjoy your vlogs so much u take me back to when I was out and about doing all those fun things. I miss those days. I’ve only got one horse I ride and she’s 35. Semi retired so I’m looking for a horse for a long life loan to join my heard so I can get out and do more as I’m missing doing more riding. Froo can only do a bit but my goodness we’ve had some fun over the years lol just happy that she’s still loving her life and that I still have her at 35 😊. It’s a mind field tho trying to find something lol but I’m In no rush. The rite one will come Alongxx

I have to say that straw seems really luxurious to me - here in the US! But that must be a difference in US & UK ag practices.

I do prefer a slow feeder Haynet - I have a mare that is basically a siphon and using a corner mesh set up like you have would not be $$$ saving 😂 but I do feed complete feeds so I don’t add too much extra - I deep litter my stables though - my horses are rugged all year round and under lights all year which keep their coats looking good, I’ve never had to clip - so not too many tips I’m afraid 😊
@footluceeventing
@footluceeventing 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I totally agree that sometimes a slow feeder is better! I use a haynet for Bonnie in the summer when I need to control her forage intake a little bit! Sounds like you’ve got your routine nailed 👏🏻

Hey I was scrolling through KZbin and came across your video on money saving tips. Instead of hey nets I use travel cots that tends to save hay and I got mine cheap or free and for bedding I have used shredded paper in the past as it was free and if you can obtain it regularly you tend not to mind wasting it as you muck out hope they are useful tips !!

I use Purefeed Working now for my mare. Much cheaper than what I was feeding as it has everything she needs in one feed! She’s on Keyflow Oil at the moment but unsure if I’ll keep that going or not as it’s very pricey 😅 thanks for the tips hun! Needing to BUDGET now 😂😂

I was feeding that too, I’ve fed Pure for the last year and it’s been fantastic but unfortunately my horse has an itchy issue and the vet has said Pure didn’t sound very Pure when she heard the ingredients, got told it has lots of potential allergens in and the podiatrist mentioned apparently (I’m not the person to ask) the balancer isn’t well balanced or something which is sad to hear! I’ve been moving to Thunderbrook feeds but my god the price difference is painful 😂 I still rate Pure mind you!

@@sophiegellender I was feeding Keyflow and found I was literally having to pay more on top of the £70/80 for the feed to supplement bits she wasn’t getting enough of haha! She’s been on Pure for a month or so now and her coats nice and shiny and she’s doing well on it! Price difference is insane of a month that’s for sure haha!

I have been extremely fortunate with my 17hh Canadian horse Merlin..He has a in out stall, and never pees in it, and rarely poops in it.. He will pee in the same spot in his paddock, and will automatically go to the spot to pee when we come out to feed, even if it's a few drops..Love that nut job, but he saves me lots of money in bedding.

you dont really need to feed them anything except forage unless they are being worked everyday. think its important to stress that to horse owners as owners generally like to overfeed their horses which can lead to colic .
