i just don't understand why treating a WORKING animal so poorly would happen, especially in a community like the amish that genuinely depend on horses like him to continue their way of life. even if they didn't care about big john emotionally, surely keeping him in good physical condition should've been the priority anyway? like imagine a farmer never doing maintenance on a tractor, not even cleaning it. what were they even doing? terrible waste of a good horse.
