This is also where the expression, "Never look a gift horse in the mouth," comes from. If someone is giving you a free horse, it was considered rude back in the day to immediately look at their teeth to gauge age. It meant you didn't trust the person gifting you, and suspected that they was trying to dump an old horse on you that they just didn't want anymore.

This is really helpful! I’ve been wanting to get another horse at an auction for a while now, but I was worried about identifying their age. All the videos I’ve watched on this have been really confusing. This was the only one that really made sense. Thank you, Carmella ❤❤❤

Our vet told us that horses lose cap teeth at around 2 1/2 and lose cap teeth again at around 4 1/2. Cap teeth look like the broken top of a molar. This is how we can best gauge my husband’s mustang’s birthdate. She lost a cap tooth in February. So she was born somewhere around 8/15-9/15 in 2019. We know my mustang’s birthday because she was photographed the day she was born; 10/13/17. She lost a cap tooth April 2022. I made a necklace with my horse’s tooth and my husband hasn’t decided what he wants to do with his horse’s tooth.

So now I know where the phrase "a little long in the tooth" comes from. Basically, someone is as old as dirt if that phrase applies. How about "a firm upper lip"? Does anyone know if that phrase originates from horses as well? My percheron started tightening up her lips the more times I kept peeking in her mouth to apply what Carmella taught in this video. Thanks, Carmella, for this vital info. I have seen a ton of videos of gauging age looking at the horses teeth & watched my vet open the horses' mouths to check age & other things like dehydration. However, no one ever broke it down in easy to understand terms like you have here in this video. I Hey, maybe show the gum check to show how pink color returns (or not) to help determine hydration. If you already have a video on that, sorry. After following my fair share of "horse veterans" on YT, the info I've learned seems to run together. You are one of the top 3 whom I follow & trust for accurate information. I may be a LOT older than you, but I haven't been around horses half as long as you. Thanks for teaching this older lady how to care for my horses as my dreams of owning horses finally came to fruition. This info is super useful. If I rescue another horse, I will utilize this info for sure.

Question! Are mustangs the same with their teeth? I have 3 mustangs and 2 burrows that were wild for around 8 to 10 years and heard that their aging of teeth is different, what are your thoughts?
@CarmellaAbel Жыл бұрын
I don’t know too much about mustangs, but seeing that they come from a more desert/arid area, their teeth probably wear faster than normal horse teeth

this is kind of random, but could you maybe answer this question? I want a horse, I don't have Land to put a horse on, I have a small job, and I'm not an adult. Is there any way for me to get a horse? I don't know if i should keep trying to get a horse while I don't have my own land, or wait until I'm older? If anyone has advice for me,please let me know! BTW I love your channel

Horse teeth do not grow after 5 years old. They erupt about an 8th an inch a year. They have around 3 to 4 inches of reserve crown under the gum line that erupts at the rate of wear.

a lot of people will tell you to look at the lines in there teeth but 9 times outta 10 its supper incorrect if you want your horses exact age and i mean like a 2-3 years range of age i would contact your dentist and get a dentist appointment and they'll tell you the age
