Charles, I've struggled a lot with anxiety since lockdown and I didn't know how to deal with it. I started watching your videos and have been turning out acre of lawn into gardens. It's given me so much meaning and wow, being out in the fresh air and sun and getting my hands in the dirt has almost completely cured me. I'm also incredibly lucky to live in a 9b zone so I can grow pretty much year round so I've got plenty to keep me busy. Your simplistic and achievable approach to garden has really changed my life. Thank you so much

Honestly you really did change my life! I was always a bit useless at gardening, although it’s always something I’ve loved, but so many books make it so complicated. During lockdown I obsessively watched so many of your videos and learnt so much! I got a small allotment and couldn’t believe how well it worked. This year I’ve turned most of my front garden into no dig beds and have plants ready to grow! I would never have done any of this without all your amazingly generous videos. THANK YOU!

It’s very endearing to see you still using that white styrofoam planting module through all these years. Just goes to show that the best gardening tools are the ones you have! It doesn’t need to be about getting the newest and greatest gimmicks, which so many other KZbin channels seem beholden to. I love this small garden series and I recommend the playlist to so many new gardeners that seem overwhelmed, thanks for sticking to it!

I love watching you work on the small garden, it’s more of a true reflection of many of us home gardeners, I don’t get 6 hours of sun in most of my garden due to high native hedges and trees in the neighbouring fields, but stuff grows if I plant appropriately. I was shocked to see your Taunton Dean had been killed by frost , I’m in North Cornwall and we had frost this year but I think the coldest was a minus 6 and most of my garden survived due I suppose to the sheltering hedges and trees, I always refer to you as my gardening guru, Thanks again Charles for sharing you vast experience and knowledge.❤️

I've been gardening since I was 8 years old and am still amazed at what a person can learn as soon as you're able to change your mindset. From tillage for 30 years, to no-til in the past 5. I love watching all of your videos DISPITE the massive weather difference (southern sask canada) We get down to -30°C in the winter. Keep it up! My dream is to teach regenerative no-til, out here in our heavily tilled, chemical agriculture landscape. Just waiting on the winning lotto numbers lol❤❤❤❤

Always fabulous to see what's happening in the "small garden". It is how I'm calibrating my success/learning. You may get bigger crops than me, but the fact I'm getting produce is more than satisfying to me! One note- when I wear a brown jacket with a red/orange top underneath, the local robins all come out to shoo me off their territory!

Good morning Charles, I can take and apply so much knowledge from your videos that the successes are already visible in my garden. A nice example is my self-made onion seed, red variety Wiro from Austria. I froze the seeds and the spring germination rate was really sensational because it was fresh. Above all, planting young seedlings brings visible benefits in terms of plant health and growth rate. Even if my compost isn't enough for all the beds, the no dig method helps weeds grow a lot less, which again saves me time and work. However, it is not easy to convey this process in a credible way, because the old habits of gardening are deeply rooted. Thanks again for your instructive videos! Ursula

Hey Charles! I am so glad to see you back in my favorite garden at Home Acres. It seems to be a microcosm of the rest of your garden with it's own microclimate and set of challenges and opportunities. I really like your rough plan approach using the nearest tech at hand ;-) Today is an auspicious day for me as I am preparing to plant a white mulberry plant in my garden. While there are many perennial fruit plants in my garden, this will be the first one I have planted myself. The other ones came with the house which I have found a real blessing from the original owner who I have never met. Cheers!

Wonderful video thanks Charles! Can't wait to get started, very much looking forward to the knowledge pack on succession planting. Last year I did try to improve but need to brush up on when I can expect harvests of different veg types to finish and plan accordingly. I have a few shady beds and find that runner beans and lettuce do well in the summer, always feel like I have too many plants I'd like to grow and not enough beds🙈, might add another this Spring that's the great thing about no dig, you can get set up with a new bed reasonably quickly!

I always struggle when it comes to rotation as I don't have the space to do so. I'm always happy when gardners talk about tomato being at the same place since decades or other crop they don't roatate due to space constraints and all goes well. So I'm watching my plants if there is any damage which might force me to pant them to another place. Thanks for sharing and have a nice weekend.

Hello from Albury NSW Australia. Only just cooled down here in autumn but very busy in the garden, must bookmark this to watch at September equinox. This past week I have planted out tiny starts of spinach, bok choy, tatsoi, Savoy cabbage, mini cabbage, beetroot, Swede and turnip. Trying carrot ( hard for me to germinate). Finishing up tomatoes, beans, will let the pumpkins hang right till June if weather allows. Oh, picking zucchini and cucumber still ! I let several radish go to seed last year and have a jam jar of seed, so I can direct sow a row every week. All made possible by finding your website four years ago Charles, thank you so much!

Love Charles how you share the reality of the gardening challenges. Here in West Cork our weather has been similar. Very uncharacteristic for our location. But then any sign of blue sky and it is quickly chemtrailed. Yes this Geo engineering is severely harming the climates, our plants and creatures. Last year our insect population was decimated. Now they inoculate even the bees, and this is contaminating the wild insects. At least me and other gardeners here face reality. We do the best we can.

I am a diehard Rubus occidentalis fan. They do grow wild here in my area of Canada but I also bought a cultivar by the name of 'Jewel'. It is said it is a bit more hardy for my area so I though I would give it a try. So far it is performing very well. I buried the canes to propagate them and that is working out as well. Take it all in Charles and enjoy! We will eventually catch up to you here. The robins have returned so it won't be long. 😁

Last year, I compared the transplant of small tomato seedlings I grew with large “store bought” plants. The small seedlings caught up with the big plants within a few weeks, and ended up handling the brutal heat we had much better. In the past month I did a side by side comparison of saved lettuce seed with newly purchased seed of the same varieties. The saved seed germinated gangbusters over the purchased seed, despite the fact that I hadn’t treated my saved seed very well in therms of storage. Will be planting out my spring onions today, which look very weak compared to yours. Hopefully they will be happier in the garden than they are in the modules.

I really enjoyed this....great to see the Spring seeds being sown. I always thought that Swede, Turnip etc; could stand cold weather....but obviously can't stand being frozen solid !

The only time i had trouble with newly bought onion seeds was when i decided to buy some from a professional seedhouse. It was Hyskin F1 and i only managed to grow a few plants that continued to perform badly. Onion seed bought in other places: garden centers, supermarkets, generally did well. Coincidentally had same experience with potatoes: the one time i bought them from a 'professional' grower, they performed mediocre. Potatoes from Lidl planted right next to them did well. Your small garden looks amazing. Fun to see you harvest parsnips while my new ones have just started to germinate (end of january sowing)

Cheers Ed, and that's all interesting to read. I have heard many people say similar that, for example, supermarket bought potatoes and garlic have grown well for them. But you just can't be sure.

A lot of tv programmes and magazine don’t cater for a small kitchen garden so it’s nice to see small beds with a variety of veg. My old garden which I started in 1976 was 11ft x 12 ft on the side of West facing a hill in Stoke on Trent. So a lot of dat round sun an as water drains downwards I never needed a hosepipe. My only problem being Equistatum and clay soil. The thing that I’ve noticed in books, seeds seem to be listed alphabetically. Herbs for instance should be listed by planting position and soil conditions and a plan to make a herb garden or where to grow them in a veg. garden which I’m sure would help people with no talent for design. (me).

Finally this year I'm making no dig beds, can't wait for the final look (I have so much composting material I need to burry it under the beds, so it decompose on it's own...straw/wood shavings and chicken manure, plus ready compost as finish on top).

The small garden is my favorite series of yours, it's so relatable! You seem to have trained your tayberry along strings; can you tell us more about that? I've been struggling with a thornless blackberry plant near a fence...

Thoroughly enjoyed that Charles, as always. The significant nugget I gleaned this time was what you said about planting seedlings out when still young, this making the transplant shock less. I am going to try that, it makes perfect sense. Thanks.

Oh I cannot await mid next week when I can plant out my seedlings like you just did. We are expecting -5 Celsius Monday and Tuesday night, but then the nights are predicted to stay beyond freezing. Your great video pleasantly shortened the waiting time for me and I got some new ideas of succession planting! Thanks so much Sir Charles.

Hello Charlie's, thank you for your very inspiring videos. I am hopeless at planning, and your visual of your planning sheet has helped with my very small garden that has two small beds. Would it be possible to do more videos on planning where things can go, on growing succession, sowing for planting in two small beds just for home gardening would be really helpful please? Many thanks 😊
