I have had 3 rotator cuff surgeries that last one Dec.2023, my Sling came from the Surgeon with a Removable foam pad Under my fore arm. Also your sling Should have a Strap that goes around your waist keeping arm from moving forward or back, and of course another strap Over your shoulder, this will keep arm from moving in your sleep and causing Great Pain... I also Highly recommend sleeping in a Recliner which I'm still doing, this Keeps you from rolling over on shoulder...

When I bought a new couch at 60, I purposely chose one with a double recliner in case of surgical recovery, given my age, and familiar history of surgeries. This was one of the few times I made a major purchase based on practicality, but now that I'm set to have a reverse shoulder replacement in a month, I'm glad I did! So much to plan for! Thank you. It’s a shame that this kind of information is not provided by the surgeon’s office before surgery. I had a right torn rotator cuff repair and biceps tenodesis 3 weeks ago and was only told to wear the sling 24x7 except for hygiene. With same day surgery you don’t get any home care to provide info. Education is lacking in general in our healthcare system. It would have been great to have one OT appt to learn to do everything with my left hand and how to get good sleep. I wish I had found this OT channel info before surgery. It has been difficult to sleep. I don’t have a wedge and I don’t think I could sleep like that in bed with a wedge and all the pillow arranging. I tried sleeping in bed and just couldn’t get comfortable. I have 2 recliners, luckily one has the handle on my left for the foot rest and is very comfortable. But I still have had trouble sleeping every night.

Hi Lindsey, great videos. I live alone, and so I don't have an extra pair of hands to help with positioning. In preparing for reverse total shoulder surgery, I placed a velour covered body pillow under a fitted flannel bottom sheet on my operative side. The friction of the two fabrics prevented the body pillow from sliding. It has been great support for my arm. Hope this helps. Thanks for all your videos.

Hope you all had successful surgeries and smooth recoveries. I'm now 1 1/2 years post op. No pain, and gaining strength and acceptable ROM. I'm right handed and my surgery was on my right shoulder. Some motions will be a no go for the rest of my life, but I'm inventing some go arounds. Be creative. As a former OR nurse, I was surprised and disappointed by the lack of instruction provided pre-op. Be sure to report it in writing to your surgeon and insurance company. Hopefully, if more patients complain, pre-op instructions will improve.

I used a BREG Kodiak cold wrap (beer cooler thingy) that circulates cold water throughout the wrap, you can change the ice (frozen water bottle - 16 oz) when they thaw out without disturbing the injury site / patient's rest. A LIFE SAVER. 4 years later I am now going in for my other arm and have even loaned it out to friends who had the same surgery and they loved it too. Cold pack therapy reduces the post surgery inflammation and helps get you off the pain meds quicker.

When I had rotator cuff surgery I found the pillows shifted and moved after I fell asleep. The wedges are also narrow and if I moved after falling asleep I was on the edge. I don't see why a foam setup hasn't been devised that has some stability for sleeping and supporting the shoulder. Medicare does not cover home health care for shoulder surgery. My second RCS coming up soon. I tried picking up my heavy purse in my back floorboard behind my console in my truck. My Dr told me 3 months to heal. It took me a good year. Then I hurt it again. Feels like my RCS arm is shorter than my other one. I’m ordering several different types of arm slings to try on before surgery. The ones they gave me in Dr office was too big. The one they gave me at hospital was too big. I’m short waisted. From my shoulder to waist is shorter than normal. I’m retired now and full time RVing so I don’t have a lazy boy and I’m here to get good ideas to turn my bed into a lazy boy position. My mom gave me a great idea last surgery to put 50% rubbing alcohol and 50% water in double ziplock bags and she made me some soft thin cotton like material covers for the ice packs and that was a life saver. I’ve already had the surgery so I know it’s a bad recovery. Get somebody to be with you for two weeks to wash dishes and cook. I’m making frozen dinners. Door Dash. Can’t think of everything but you really need to try. Good luck to all of you having this surgery. I also recommend finding a movie series to watch on Hulu or Netflix. That will help keep your mind off of the pain. And you can rewind when you fall asleep. Get up as much as possible and do your exercises. Medicate really good first. Put ice on after. Don’t do any physical activity and have a pain break through. And don’t overdo your exercises because you can’t feel the pain on the medicine. I would set my timer to remind me to get up and exercise my shoulder and arm. Buy you a bowel like hospitals have that’s curved and learn to brush your teeth in bed is what I did. You don’t need a toothache to go along with the pain from surgery. Get everything in arms reach. Watch your steps too. I couldn’t see the steps because of my arm sling and busted my tail but thank God I didn’t hurt my shoulder. Good luck. It will get better. Time will fly after the first week. ❤

This was a very informative video, thank you so much. I am three weeks post surgery and have just been sleeping on my couch sitting up pretty much. I bought a recliner, but I just couldn't get comfortable sleeping on it. The biggest issue I am facing is that I wake up so stiff sleeping on the couch. It’s unlikely you’ve impacted your surgical repair. If you have excruciating sharp pain at the surgical site then seek attention. Stiffness is very normal with shoulder surgery. I hope you are able to find a comfortable position for sleep soon 🙏🏻

I am usually a side sleeper, but with leg and lumbar support can sleep on my back for the first month. My question is, how high do you recommend the pillow? I see 7.5", 10" and 12 ". Thanks for this information. Day 5 after surgery and I still have not been able to sleep more than 3 hours off and on a night. Too much pain...despite taking my prescribed pain management medicine. I wear a sling...more like a brace w an abduction pillow. My neck is chaffed from the shoulder strap, my forearm itches from wearing this contraption all day, hand is cold from lack of blood circulation. Add to the mix that I have to sleep in one position almost upright to not feel even more pain and basically- this has made me sleep deprived and even more moody and restless. Will likely up my pain med intake or start taking something to help me sleep. One or the other...not both. Will try the wedge, but learned through experience that I need to be about 65-75 degrees upright to not have sharp pain shooting through my shoulder.

@@russell7445 Looking back, I was actually in pretty good shape at 6 weeks, my range of motion came back quickly, but strength took a bit longer, 3 months or so, to come back. Now I'm looking at having to do my other shoulder if and when I can get it scheduled. Hopefully, my right shoulder will come back as quickly as my left one did. Sucks to get old.....

Hi Lindsey, great videos. I have a rotator cuff full tear repair coming up, and I'm a side sleeper (due to sleep apnea), but won't have a second person to place the pillow behind me. Is there a way for me to do this myself? Maybe use a helper stick or put additional wedge pillows behind me? Thanks for your help!

I had 5 surgical repairs in 2018 on my left shoulder; including rotator cuff & bicep tendon. A little bit to much excitement with my grandblessings left me w/torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders. I put off surgery. No I'm bone on bone on my left shoulder & need both rotator cuff repair & total replacement. I wish I had not waited, I don't think I'd be in the pain or surgical situation I'm in now. I bought a U shaped pregnancy pillow for this surgery. Sleeping was impossible last time; in the bed or recliner. The bed ladder is definitely something I'm ordering right now. I have a huge issue getting up since it's both shoulders. I did also get an automatic bed frame that raises my head or foot sections. But honestly, that doesn't help.

I have a large labral tear, surgeons want to do tendonesis but the oldest doctor says to stop using my arm and it will scar into shoulder but shouldn't play tennis again. He has worked with one of the NBA teams and says ill have a stiff shoulder the rest of my life if I get surgery. All the other surgeons recommend getting it fixed. Im just not so sure cutting the bicep tendon and attaching elsewhere will be withhout issue bio mechanically.

Hi there great tips, I am going in for a rotator cuff surgery thursday october 21st 2021. I may still need a reclining because my bed is positined same as yours but against the wall where the only way to get in my bed is from the side you demostrated and the shoulder that will be operated on is my left shoulder, I like the idea of the bed ladder.Im going to look for and purchase it and the wedge too.

@@EquipMeOT Hi I also Have another question for you. Did you have to use some sort of ice packs to calm the swelling on the operated shoulder? Did you have one of those machines that has a tube connected to the machine and the other of the tube was a pad like that you would put on your shoulder and it woud stay cold? If you had the machine, where can I the machine?

You don’t need to go out and buy a recliner. Buy a sit up type pillow that has the arm support and buy a travel neck pillow so you don’t wake up w a sore neck like I did the first two night. So far the last two nights I have finally got decent sleep. Anymore questions I’ll be glad to help. I posted one video of the day after surgery take a watch it shows you my bed set up

I had rotator surgery in 2017 & tried to sleep in my recliner but my body wasn’t having it. Luckily it was my left shoulder & I am right handed so I found a way to lie on my right side In my bed with several pillows. I don’t flip over at night so all was good. It was rough for few but physical therapy helped me heal very fast. I was surprised I had no pain at all during recovery.

You might also place a pillow underneath the knees to prevent sheer force that can occur as a result of the elevation.

If your sling comes with a pillow ‘attachment’, would that work as well or in place of the separate thin pillow you show? And I don’t quite understand your explanation of the bed ladder. I get that you will need something to hang on to and help you rise without moving or straining your shoulder, but when you say to place it on the foot of the bed, I do not see that. Could you show or explain that in a bit more detail possibly? Thanks for your help!
@EquipMeOT3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the attached pillow on the sling will provide similar support. I did a separate video about bed ladders here 👇🏻 kzbin.info/www/bejne/goDQZpmknK-bi8U

I am 2 weeks postoperative rotator cuff repair. I've been miserable. Sleep 1.5-3 hours per night trying recliner, large chairs, pillows, etc. None of this info was provided by my surgeon. I'm a small woman, and the sling doesn't fit me but was told this was all they have. I'm getting pressure sores in my ribs, my elbow, and my shoulder blades because the straps and buckles hit me in those areas. So uncomfortable. I'm miserable.
