James Mwangi, born in 1962 in Kangema, Central Province, Kenya, is a prominent accountant, banker, and entrepreneur who has significantly impacted Africa's financial sector. He serves as the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Equity Group Holdings Plc, a leading banking conglomerate with over 14 million customers as of 2019, making it one of the largest in Africa.
Recognized globally for his leadership and vision, Mwangi was named among The Financial Times' Top 50 Thought Leaders of Emerging Markets in 2009 and one of the Top 20 Most Influential People in Africa. He has held several influential roles, including the Founding Chairman of the Kenya Vision 2030 Delivery Board, tasked with transforming Kenya into a middle-income country by 2030. Mwangi currently serves as the Chancellor of Meru University College of Science and Technology and chairs the health committee of Kenya's COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund.
Raised by his widowed mother, Grace Wairimu, alongside six siblings, Mwangi experienced firsthand the challenges of poverty in his community. Inspired by his mother's values of discipline, hard work, and generosity, he excelled academically, earning scholarships to Nyagatugu Primary School, Ichagaki Secondary School, and Kagumo High School. Mwangi later graduated from the University of Nairobi with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and became a Certified Public Accountant. He also completed advanced management training at the IESE Business School in Spain and holds five honorary doctorate degrees from leading universities in Kenya.
