Yes i thought the same thing as well. But again, Susan has always been highly self critical of herself and sometimes others. She was right about her sister though, She said she wouldn't, And she didn't. But at times that wasn't always tge case.

@@sadieyoung7397 Escaping reality only works to a point. Part of the point of the show like ER is that what happens is feasible, so it has to be real. An example of this problem on ER would be the doctor getting his arm lopped off by a helicopter and then dying to a helicopter landing on him. Technically possible? Yes. Realistically plausible? Not hardly.

Her name was Kem. They introduced her in season... 10? I think? They met in The Congo in a refugee camp. They then got married, and returned to the US when Carter's grandmother died. The baby was stillborn, sadly, at 8 months old. That's at the end of season 10,the episode is called Midnight (episode 21 of season 10) and it's absolutely heartbreaking. This scene would be shortly after the loss of his own baby.

He and Kem grew apart in the aftermath of losing the child, she left for Paris to live with her parents. But they do remain married, though separated, and reconnect, a bit, during season 11,and eventually return to Africa together to work on their marriage. Oddly enough when he returns for the final wrap-up of the show in season 15 things are *still* not good between them and I'm genuinely not sure where they stand, at the end of the show. It seems it's... Complicated. That's as much as I can remember, really.

@@TheDragonstar2 he didn't really get a crappy ending, in the end, it was just very... Open-ended. Like they left a lot of questions unanswered and they left a lot of things in the air, but there was a hint of hope and peace in the last episode. We just don't KNOW how things shaped up for him but it's possible that he went on to live happily ever after. He didn't get the worst deal of the characters, not by a long shot.

Carter and Kem got married after he left in season 11 off screen. They were married when Carter returned in season 13 I believe, and still married in season 15 for his ending story arc, but they were like the OP said, not on good terms (but not on bad terms). I just think even though they loved each other - Kem could just never get over Joshua's death and it's all she saw when she looked at him, thus making their relationship difficult, despite I'm sure, Carter's every effort to make it work.
