I am a hospital chaplain in training. My supervisor showed me this scene as a learning tool. I thought it's so powerful, partly as an example of what not to say.

What do you say?

Maybe offer him a priest (note he held a rosary). And if a priest isn't available, let the patient talk, ask himself how he atones, try to find a way to let him solve it. It's better to let a patient think through something, or even just be there listening, than to give pat answers.

+tkellnerus You're just like that stupid woman! She's telling the exact same thing that you tell them, that they need to ask themselves. He said at the 2:48 mark that he does NOT need to ask himself! He wants answers! How about showing them the truth from the scriptures on how a person can be forgiven?! Or do you not know? And you call yourself a chaplin? Yeah right...

What that man needs is the gospel. God can use a child to bring that message, or a janitor. Many religious people are ashamed of the gospel.

The answer to this question is a simple one, yes there is definitely a way salvation is offered to all who believe on the name of christ and confess your depravity as a human. The bible says God is faithful and just to forgive. If you read the Gospel of John, Jesus repeatedly claims to be the way to the father (John 14:6, 11:25, etc). What does that mean? The apostle Paul breaks it down for us well in Romans, as well as the pastoral epistles. Getting to the crux, the answer is the Gospel. The answer is by faith alone, through grace alone (grace that God has offered to us) in Christ Alone. Read Romans 10:9&10. Of course, Good works are important and show a true Christians love/zeal for his/her faith, which promoted James to write in James 2:17 that "faith by itself, without works is dead". However, we see by examining New testament scripture that Works are not a criteria by which salvation is granted. Salvation is only through faith in Christ and the humbling of oneself by confessing your sins, and confessing your depravity that you would not be able to atone for yourself, but it was only God in his mercy, that sent forth his Son, manifest in flesh, as it was prophesied in Isaiah 53 and Psalm 22, to give us all (all who believe (john3:16-17))) this gift of eternal life. My catholic and Orthodox brothers and sisters, don't take my word for it, but examine the Canonical scriptures for yourself, and see that the authority and authenticity of the scriptures will be able to convince you of the grace and sufficiency of Jesus Christ (Read the book of Hebrews, that was written to early converts, and the Apostle Paul (most probably the author) writes to convince them of the superiority of Christ over the Judaic system). God Bless You, and if anyone ever asks you this question, you can give them a real, true hope that Rests in the Person of Jesus Christ.

Whoever posted this scene, thank you so much. It is a rotound fistful in the face of New Age, Reiki, Tribal spirituality and all those derelictions of the true Faith: the Christian Faith. Only in the revelation of Jesus Christ comes forth Light to live and assurance after death.

If I was in her shoes, I would be honest with this dying man and tell him that if he doesn’t repent and put his trust in Jesus Christ that he will die and the wrath of the one and only true and just God will be poured out on Him. But praise God that He came in the flesh as the man Jesus Christ to live a perfectly sinless life and die as an innocent substitute for all who come to Him for salvation by grace through faith.

She sounds like the Oracle. Merovingian would have done a much better job. "Cause..and effect. You kill...and now you suffer. If you want atonement, then you must give something back." Actually, Agent Smith would have done even better: "What is the point of atonement if you are unable to speak?"

You put your hand on his hand and your other hand on his head and say, "Having heard this, your confession, I forgive you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Your sins are forgiven for Christ's sake. Receive His peace. You are free." It is finished.

I am hoping that if i am confronted with this I don't beat around the bush, but get them to pray for repentance and ask for Jesus's atoning blood to make them a whole new person washed of sin and its seductive power. I know someone hooked on crack, a life of stealing and petty crimes and wrote down a speech but not sure how to get hold of her as she is in hospital somewhere. I fell out with her over theft of a mobile phone but i would rather she not die in her sin and blow her shot at everlasting life in Christ. I get this nasty anxiety inside, a kind of social anxiety mixed with the guilt of cowardice when i am confronted with these situations.

Do not wait until your dying day to seek forgiveness. Tomorrow is promised to no one. Seek the Lord today, when he may be found. Admit you are a guilty sinner, deserving of his wrath. Believe that he sent his Son Jesus to die for your sin, and that Christ rose from the dead. Ask him for faith to be saved. Ask him for the free gift of eternal life. Ask him for the Holy Spirit to change your heart and make you new.

To tell the guy that the Blood of Jesus Christ brutally drained out from His body was not enough to erase his sins and guilt, but a couple hundred years of roasting in "purgatory" should suffice? No thanks. Bring back the New Age chaplain, at least she is funny to listen.

I was so happy when i firsr saw this scene cuz i didnt like her from the start with all her hypocrisies and conflicting ideologies. God isnt all roses and sunshine. God is a vengeful God and there is a pricw to pay for sin and deep down this man knew this more than she did. The fact that she quits immediately after this tells you all you need to know.
