Some advice for medical students from Dr. Greene: 'Helping them is more important than how we feel'
Greene: --"People come in here and they're sick and dying and bleeding, and they need our help. Helping them is more important than how we feel"
--"There's two kinds of doctors... there's the kind that gets rid of their feelings, and the kind that keeps them. If you're gonna keep your feelings, you're gonna get sick from time to time - that's just how it works"
ER: 24 Hours, Season 1, Episode 1 (1994)
John Carter: I thought I was gonna be sick.
John Carter: I'm sorry.
Dr. Mark Greene: Don't ever say you're sorry. See, there's two kinds of doctors... there's the kind that gets rid of their feelings, and the kind that keeps them. If you're gonna keep your feelings, you're gonna get sick from time to time - that's just how it works.
Dr. Mark Greene: Keep your head down.
Dr. Mark Greene: People come in here and they're sick and dying and bleeding, and they need our help. Helping them is more important than how we feel.
John Carter:
Dr. Mark Greene: But it's still a pain the ass sometimes.
John Carter:
Dr. Mark Greene: Sometimes, I just want to quit and do somethin' else.
Dr. Mark Greene: Yeah.
Dr. Mark Greene: Why don't you take a few more minutes?
John Carter: Okay.
Dr. Mark Greene: By the way, I was in medical school with Benton... and he used to get sick *all the time*, so... don't let him give ya any crap. You're gonna be fine
The Letter [8.20]
[After Gallant gets sick during a trauma. Carter repeats what Dr. Mark Greene told him in the same situation eight years ago.]
Gallant: You know, sometimes I don't think I can do this.
Carter: You know, there's two kinds of doctors. There's the kind that get rid of their feelings, and the kind that hold on to them. If you hold on to your feelings you're going to get sick every once in a while. It's part of it. You know, people come in here, and they're sick, and they're bleeding, sometimes they're dying. And they need our help. And helping them is more important than how we feel. But hell, I've been doing this eight years I still get sick. Take another minute.

It's hard to believe this show first aired 20 years ago! Damn! Look how young George Clooney and Noah Wyle looked! Actually all of them! This show was awesome...someone has to upload all 15 seasons!

Mark Green was my FAVOURITE on the show. The Doctor I had before I moved a few years ago looks EXACTLY like Greene. Has the same mannerisms and that bedside manner Green had!!

too bad that, ever since the flexner report (google it) medical school has largely abandoned centuries of common sense wisdom regarding treating the patient as an entire person, not merely a compartmentalized sum of functions and systems. a doctor used to consider all of the patient not just their specialty in other words. now we have all kinds of compartmentalized specialists, and they never know what the other thinks, and they've all been divided and conquered... and they are a trained army who is hell bent on giving you, the patient every kind of drug known to man. it's a scam! and they know it is a scam. so they cook up some baloney T.V. show where they hire actors to paint a pig so to speak, and act as their PR campaign. it's all a big hocus pocus scam.
