For a fair comparison you need to load the same number of grains. Penetration is a controlled by velocity and bullet mass. Speed being the most important. Your round ball won't bounch off and it will be faster than the conical when using the same powder charge. Also the manufacturer as well as the granulation size greatly affects the velocity with black powder. Swiss powder being the hotest black powder.

Good video on the 1849 31 caliber. I liked that you did a penetration test and a chronograph test,, very informative. Thank you, look forward to seeing more black powder percussion firearms videos.

Best to use 4Fg in a .31, for loose loading. Mark Hubbs of Eras Gone Bullet Molds got 900 fps using GOEX 4Fg. Swiss 4Fg would be even hotter.
@blackpowdershooter442 жыл бұрын
I will have to try that. In the past, I was apprehensive about using 4F in a revolver, but I'm curious to give it a go.
@63DW89A2 жыл бұрын
@@blackpowdershooter44 I usually replace stock nipples with quality after market nipples having the proper very tiny flash holes used on original Colt, Remington and other revolvers. The tiny flash holes minimize blow-back, preventing cap jams, and also prevent the fine-grained 4Fg from dribbling thru nipples with too large flash holes. The fine powder dribbling thru a nipple and coating the breech area sets up a possible chain fire. The proper nipples prevent the dribble-thru of fine powders during loose loading. For constructing revolver combustible cartridges , I use Swiss Null B powder, an extremely fine grain 5Fg powder, which would be very close to the Hazard Cartridge powder provided for making revolver combustible cartridges in the 19th Century. With the very fine grain powder contained in the paper powder envelope, there is no danger of powder dribble thru when loading. Thanks for your video work, and Safe Shooting!

A full chamber of Hodgdon triple seven could give you better velocities.
@blackpowdershooter442 жыл бұрын
I agree, however with too much compression on T7, the results have been all over the place for me in the past, so I generally prefer real black or Pyro P. It's difficult to seat the projectile lightly on the powder when the cylinder is loaded off the revolver.
@jumpkickman19932 жыл бұрын
@@blackpowdershooter44 that's absolutely true I've done some velocity readings and with less triple seven and less compression I get better velocities and normal goex3f but pyrodex P usually outperforms both of them

Powder matters a lot in the.31 percussion revolvers. Goex 3f or triple seven pistol propellant would be the best the triple seven being preferred because a little faster and cleaner . And you'll get more velocity with the round ball because you can get more powder behind it
@Everythingblackpowder2 жыл бұрын
What kind of black powder were you using? The pyrodex outperformed it by a long ways. I have a 44 Johnston and Dow mold from eras gone, it work’s great.

Nice test, the .31 performed well with Pyrodex and eras gone conicals, I have the 1862 pocket and wouldn’t mind trying out some conicals in it
@blackpowdershooter442 жыл бұрын
It did do well; I like the bullet. The 1862 models are nice guns, I've held them before and was surprised at how small they are compared to a Navy.
@DeucesWildRC2 жыл бұрын
Yes it’s a small one but really cool, way smaller than my 1851 Navy and 1858 Remington by far, I was surprised when I shot it I was thinking it would have much more recoil because of its smaller size, I upped the grains from 15 to 20 grains of Pyrodex and it was still an easy shooter, I’ve since slicked up the action on it and installed Slixshot nipples on it and my 1851, now I need to test it again and see if I get less cap jams, I also polished the hammer face to help increase its reliability as well, we’ll see the next time I take them to the range
@blackpowdershooter442 жыл бұрын
@@DeucesWildRC Awesome. I would like to get one one day, 20 grains in that little gun isn't bad at all.

I have one of the 1862 pocket police's and I would absolutely recommend the .390 diameter Conicles from Mark hubs "eras gone" they're 147grain and you get a huge ring of lead when you seat the bullet.

I had so much problems out of my 1849 I sold it about 25 years ago. I think it was Pietta if I recall it could have been uberti. I had to put two main springs in it to get good ignition out of the caps. I been thinking of buy another one

So the 80 grain .31 Cal Eras Gone conical bullet seems to be traveling at between 700-800 fps. Penetration seems ok penetrating3 boards using the pyrodex load. Sounds close to a 32 special short or colt short. I might try FFFFG black powder.

Are the darned .44s often on a .45 barrel?
@blackpowdershooter44 Жыл бұрын
No, just the balls used are oversized in a .45 diameter (.451", .454", .457") so that there is a tight seal when the ball is pressed into the chamber, at which time they are brought down to a .44 diameter
