I just got that kit .

I punch the dry wool felt first then lube the individual wads in the melted mix. This way I'm not wasting lube on the pieces of felt that isn't in the wads. Sometimes I put the dry wads in a butter dish, add in the solid wax/tallow chunks, cover the dish with an old piece of nylon stocking, and melt things together with a hair dryer. I use a 12 mm (0.472) inch punch from Brettuns village leather supply. Also, punch into end grain of wood.

I like Pyrodex for the velocity it provides… but I don’t like the fact that it degrades in storage. I have cans of BP that are 25 plus years old that have as much bang now as when they were new… and I have Pyrodex that’s also the same age that will barely but when lit with a match… I would trust a pistol that was loaded with BP and shelved for a decade but not one loaded with Pyrodex a month ago.

By the way, here in heavily restricted Britain, we need a licence to own a black powder firearm, PLUS and EXPLOSIVE's licence to own BLACK POWDER, and black powder must be stored in a BRIGHT ORANGE container away from the main residence.

Every time I see a black powder pistol being fired whether it's a cap and ball or a cartridge round, and the amount of smoke produced I always think of how the "Gunfight at the O.K Corral" must have looked in that 30 second shoot out.

Well the ejector rod is indeed used for ramming but not round balls Try minie ball and it would work just fine

i always wondered the velocity of these types of pistols with modern BP. compared to a 45 colt out of a bond arms derringer. i load a 250 grain maxi slug @700 fps. from a tiny 3.5 in barrel. very cool. thanks for testing this. its fun to compare old tech vs new.

Both Dixie guns and 22lr reloader sell these tap o caps in both #10 and #11. Only difference that found is Dixie is a bit more costly than 22reloader. I checked both and saved about 35 dollars when ordering the same things on 22lr than dixie!

I'd have stopped after removing the trigger guard and grips; throw the pistol into a Ballistol bath; use soft tooth brush; since in hot water and finish up with another Ballistol bath. B careful with the nipples; soak in Ballistol; soft tooth brush; consider AM SS replacement nipples. Just my opinion.

How many black powder guns have you shot so far I have a collection for you?

I have one of these guns and out of all (read too many) percussion guns I have it takes the crown of the best cap jamamatic on the shelf. It is a very attractive gun, but my experience with it has not been good. The cap post solved the cap jam problem but I still prefer my 1851 Navy.

So the 80 grain .31 Cal Eras Gone conical bullet seems to be traveling at between 700-800 fps. Penetration seems ok penetrating3 boards using the pyrodex load. Sounds close to a 32 special short or colt short. I might try FFFFG black powder.

Can you use 2F powder ?

I carry the pocket revolver with a 32 S&W conversion cylinder. Not because I have to. Just my choice. Carries like a pocket knife. Someone tested 32S&W and got 12" of penetration in gel on a 2" barrel on another channel.

Eh, I will say through my own experiments, and yours as well as several others posting results of blackpowder revolvers, well I think I`d prefer NOT getting shot by it, as far as deadly I do not see any naysayer stepping out to hold the target to prove me wrong.

The sight is on backwards so it won’t snag on the draw (or at least that’s what I’d tell my buddies) If you want a nice reaction try filling the pumpkins with water. Have you chrono’d this pistol?

Uh, A-L-L 1873 Peacemaker Frame revolvers, of whatever brand, and whether it's a cartridge OR percussion cap pistol, should ALWAYS LOAD FIVE (5) , N-E-V-E-R - 6 ! For Example, this is why Ruger quit making the single action old model 3 screw, .22, .357, .44, etc and designed a transfer bar safety for the revolver because ignorant, inexperienced shooters kept loading 6 and accidentally firing a load! STUPID! On the 4 click models, A-L-W-A-Y-S keep the hammer back ''1 Click'' ''KNOWLEDGE'' is also a ''Safety'' ! There are MANY variations of the 1873 peacemaker, whether it's the original Colt, the 1970s Virginian Dragoon, Ruger with adjustable sights, Uberti, who by the way, makes an excellent reproduction, & several others. The point is, they are all based on the Colt 1873 Peacemaker Frame (or the Army M1873 until almost the end of the 19th century) Incidentally, Ruger modified the design by removing the double leaf spring and replacing it with coil springs! However, I have made my own leaf springs out of feeler gauge leafs. But instead of ONE THICK SPRING like came with the gun that always breaks, I stack about 5 or 6 thinner ''feeler gauge leafs'' together! Which hardy ever break. Use a Dremel to make the springs, and keep and use the original hole in the feeler gauge for the screw. If you'd much rather replace the broken spring with store bought, go ahead. I NEVER do though

Accidentally rolled one of those #10 caps up in a joint and was smoking it on my way to the gym when it exploded in my face!! Scared the fuck outta me. That's what I get for capping my revolvers and rolling a joint at the same time without wearing my glasses!!

You want increase the vol and pen you need to use .232 round balls ir cinicals. Real black powder as these were originally designed for (4f) will also do wonders.

Powder matters a lot in the.31 percussion revolvers. Goex 3f or triple seven pistol propellant would be the best the triple seven being preferred because a little faster and cleaner . And you'll get more velocity with the round ball because you can get more powder behind it

Velocity is a result of pressure. If you shoot an undersized ball in a gun the bullet will not grip the rifling fully and low velocity will result. if your chambers are undersized then it makes little difference what the dia of the ball started out at you will have lower pressure and lower velocity.. as you know the ball is sized in the chamber. Soooo ream the chambers to near bore size then use a larger in dia ball. The velocity will go up a lot sand the recovered bullet will show that they ball engaged the rifling all the way

I have the Pietta 1851 navy and like it a lot. recently bought the 1862 pocket police which is a bit different with the round barrel and loading lever like an 1860 Army. Have not shot the police yet so this is interesting to me. In my 51 I had to ream the chambers which were way undersized at around .366 LOL to .373 and now use .380 balls . the Uberti 62 police had very well matched chambers/bore. gonna try .375 balls and .380 balls in it With the 51 changing to 380 balls after reaming chambers shrank the groups big time.. cut em at least in half?
