1:16-2:07 Okay, I despise this movie. As a fan of the books, this movie is like a cancer that needs to be expunged, in my mind. However, this one scene is very, very good. It exemplifies the character of Eragon perfectly; a simple farm boy who has to overcome his fear in order to become a hero and a symbol of freedom by taking up the mantle of the Dragon Riders. It shows Saphira's wisdom and her conviction that both she and Eragon will rise to greatness if they stay true to one another. Most of all, it shows that their power together is greater than it could ever hope to be when they are apart. It helps a lot that Rachel Weisz was great in her role as Saphira. In total, this movie is a betrayal of the Inheritance Cycle, but this one scene, along with a handful of others throughout the film, was handled very well in the spirit of the series. The music and visuals in this minute or so are also great, particularly that shot of Eragon silhouetted above the battlefield in the dragonhold.

The movie would have been great, had it not been based off a book. The dragon is seen often (there are more dragon scenes in this movie than there are in movies with the name "Dragon" in the title), the CGI looks amazing (the fire looks real, if it's not), the voices match the characters, and the hero loses every here and there which keeps it interesting. The books are better, they have more detail and story. The movie's story base is a bit confusing and doesn't really explain itself well to those who haven't read the books... But overall, it's pretty good as a movie. There's a fight scene, a baby dragon scene, scenes that show how Eragon grows up, etc. Again, if this were a movie not based off of any books, the CGI and acting would be enough to call it a great movie.

I imagined her voice as being more...well, more. Deeper and resonant. They should neved have made this movie before the book series was over though, because they ended up contradicting a lot of the later stuff. I see a bunch of people griping that "The book was better", and, having not read the book, I'm not sure about that from my personal views. But the movie was still entertaining to say the least. I enjoyed it when I saw it in theaters, and that's what I care most about. Like SST, on its own, it is a good movie. Is it a 1-1 telling of the book? No. I've heard that the book covers a time period of a couple years while Saphira grows from hatchling to Adult, and that it takes even longer for her to breath fire. You guys do have to understand, that film-makers are sometimes pressured to get a book movie out, and may not be given the best of budgets. Of course, some of this could be down to the fact that the writer of the novel had little say in the film making process, like how Robert A. Heinlein didn't have much say in how SST was made into a film (he died almost a decade before SST hit theaters though). It just all depends on several factors: 1. Does the studio care to stay close to the source material? and 2. Does the IP holder have a say in how it's handled? Case in point, the Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings films. While, again, not 1-1 retellings of their respective novels, they were still as close as practical, but that's because the studios were willing to take a chance on the IPs, and give them the money they needed to get the job done right. The CG team in charge of this film was spot on though, and made Saphira very believable. The writers may have compressed the story to fit the film, but they may have been given a target length, and they may have had to make compromises to hit that target. At the end of the day though, there were a lot of talented people who poured their heart and soul into the film. Even if you don't like the final project, at least give credit that these guys did the best that they could.

And then in rode Daenerys Stormborn on her three dragons. "That's cute", she said. "DRACARYS!" And nothing was left of Eragon, Saphira, or those who survived the battle, and House Targaryen ruled over the Vardon for a thousand years hence.

The movie is fine as its own thing. It got a lot of elements right there and if more elements of the book were included (I wouldve said give the film an extra hour and make it an epic) then we may have had all 4 books done by now.

you know, whenever i pictured a "urgal" i always envisioned orcs of some kind

From the second book: Urgal 'ram' (a leader) appears and is described as grotesque, eight and a half feet tall, yellow fangs, fantastic musculature, boney jaw, long black hair in a queue (braid) and with thick horns which curl all the way around. Dressed in only a loin cloth and scraps of armour held together with pieces of chain mail. So I guess your vision of an orc isn't far wide of the mark.

Been awhile since I read the books, but didn't he make his sword Brisinger (however you spell it) in the 3rd book? And didn't the dragon learn to breath fire at the last second during this battle?
