Thank you for this video. I dont know after how many searches I found what I needed. I had to take out the spool housing since s wire got entangled in it when I was using the trimmer. And it happened on the first day of use. Thanks for this video! Really really helpful.

I've done this job twice now. The spool housing must be a weak point, otherwise is a good machine. By the way it is totally unnecessary (and a lot more work) to dismantle the motor housing. I was easily able to align the shaft to the gear with a little "finessing" from below. I also added some white lithium grease to the spool housing shaft - needed or not, I don't know... The video was too late for me, but it's good that you made it.

My spool housing's plastic part was separated from the metal shaft. Your video (3:50) shows you are holding the plastic part to undo the flexible cable. How can I remove the flexible cable with the plastic part not intact? Do I need some special tool?

Finally got the handle off. The trick is to insert the rod and pull up on the handle to keep the retainer down on that side. Then push the button on the other side until it clears the space

I bought a wire brush wheel to use on my weed eater and it is a black and decker weed eater. But I don't know how to attach it or if it can be attached. my yard is like a jungle. I am 71 years old and I need a strong weed eater to cut down the small trees, vines and the rest of the jungle down. does anyone know how I can put the wire brush wheel on my weed eater.

I used a thick coat hanger to push in the hole and only the handle side with the coat hanger inserted came loose. I put both feet on it on the floor on either side of the handle and mangled the handle off with that one side disconnected. I thought the handle might be damaged, but the plastic handle deformed enough to remove it on just one side disconnected and it seems intact. It was not easy. I figured if the handle or housing was damaged it might be trash anyway.

what about an older gx1100 with a wobbly shaft? I can't get the cable to unscrew.

I had to use 2 wrenches to unscrew the cable, because my spool housing was broken and separated from the cable.

Thanks. I have this apart, but when turning the spool housing to unscrew it from the cable, the spool is hard to turn while I am clamping the cable in a vise. Basically the cable is not unscrewing. Any suggestions?

Experiencing the same issue. I think that’s why he took apart the upper end; the shaft goes all the way up

@@annmaes7550 I was trying to replace the spool mechanism with another brand that has great reviews. That necessitated unscrewing the head assembly. Ultimately I was not able to do this and returned the head. I followed another KZbin video that showed how to disable the auto feed and only manually feed it. Still not a great solution, but better than the original design. BTW I saw another video that explained the reason for auto feed not working properly was the line size was too large.

@@adebrettski Mine was kind of stuck and I used (2) 13mm open end wrenches on each side of the spool housing to break the threads loose. I had to push pretty hard to get it to move.
