I had a very similar model trimmer and this worked like a champ! Parts was around 20 bucks. I know I've thrown away trimmers before when one of those clutch springs go and I never bothered to look why. This was excellent!

If your trimmer has the electric starter option, you can use a pentalobe bit and a 1/4 drive ratchet to hold the crank when removing the clutch shoes...useful !

You will need a Torx T20 (slim shaft) to fit inside of that clutch drum shaft. T25 is going to be to large.

Samsung Allen wrenches and torx are interchangeable btw however the clutch is tight so yeah use a torx or it will strip but for stuff that isnt so tight a allen can undo a torx and vice versa

Mark, Another great informative video. I’ve watched several of yours and never realized that it would be very helpful, for me anyway, if you could mention the size of the bit you use to remove fastener whatever. I guess this just came to light with this video because that is what I am doing on my neighbors Troy-bilt trimmer. I can’t seem to find the fight Allen size to fit down the clutch housing to take it off. That’s when it hit me, maybe you could call out the bit size of wrench size thus making it a little easier for us DIY’ers. Keep up the great presentations and I’ll keep watching and learning. Happy New Year Mark! Sincerely, Dorald Keefer

Great video. Wish I had seen this first. I didn't know there was a set screw in the drum. I used an allen wrench to tighten it down. When the springs came apart the first time after 3 yrs of use. Everything including the drum fell out when I removed the 3 screws. I didn't know there was one there. I replaced it with another clutch assembly and it lasted another year without tightening the drum. I ordered another part and found your video for reference. Thanks.

I do not understand why the crankcase cover needed to be removed as you did nothing there to stop the crank from turning, it was only the starter cord that you used to bind the cylinder.

Thank you so much for this video, I just took one off tonight of a 15 year old weed-eater (troy bilt) no they are not reverse threads,lol like some folks were asking here, just tight as hell,this might help someone out in the future,the area on my clutch where he puts the crescent in the video is very thin on mine so it was pipe wrench time and i tell you i put penetrating oil on it and it was reeaaaally tight and the clutch was somewhat corroded, ,might have to get a new one once i inspect everything.

I am curious - What is the purpose of removing the rear engine and crankcase covers? I see no activity on that section of the engine as the shaft locking is done with feeding the starter rope into the combustion chamber.

Great video! Thank you so much! I have a question for you though: is removing the crank shaft cover necessary? I never heard you mention why and it seems like clogging the piston through the spark plug hole didn’t require it.
@FIXTechGuides Жыл бұрын
To remove just the clutch you would only need to secure the piston thru the spark plug hole but if the ex drive that the clutch connects to requires service them the crankcase cover would require removal. Thanks for the question

I have a question I hope you can answer. When I removed my clutch housing, it was free spinning, independent from the crankshaft, but the torx screw holding it on was very tight. When I reinstalled it, I tightened the screw down tight, but when I do, it does not let the housing free spin until the clutch itself engages. My trimmer will not start with any kind of attachment on it because the housing is locked to the crank. I had to go back in and loosen the screw holding the housing on to make it work properly, but I am worried about a loose screw in there. What am I missing? I reinstalled the large washer behind the clutch and two shims on top of the clutch prior to re-installing the clutch housing. I am beginning to think the torx screw was not tight from the factory, but had some sort of thread locker on it to hold it in position. Can anyone shed some light on this issue for me??
@UTube_userRM2 жыл бұрын
Did you ever figure this out? I see my clutch housing "free spinning" too, and wondering about what to do next. Thanks
@watcherwatchmen7785 Жыл бұрын
@@UTube_userRM The clutch housing is supposed to be free spinning after tightening the screw. When the clutch spins faster it springs out and contacts the clutch housing, causing the shaft to start spinning.
