I think that the concept Disney uses is neoteny, which is an evolutionary feature. So we already consider babies cute, and a lot of the facial characteristics Disney uses (especially in women) are kind of similar to a baby's face, so large eyes, forehead, small nose and mouth, chubby/full cheeks, small chin etc.
@cvgurau4 жыл бұрын
came here to say this. we like cats because we’re evolved to love and feel protective of infants, and they have very similar proportions. so EJ is technically right, in that elsa looks like a cat, but we like cats because they look like babies.

I had an art teacher that talked about something similar but he actually said it was because of babies (big forehead and eyes, small button nose, soft lips), because babies are cute and etc, so that's what inspired disney's first animations.
@JMulvy6 жыл бұрын
The eyes take up the majority of the head because they convey the most emotion on their own, and are easy to animate, compared to say the complexity of skin wrinkling or all the many muscles of the mouth and lips. Plus, they are bright, colorful, captivating, a focal point of a person's face. Mainly the first and last thing we identify Disney characters by are their eyes. Especially females.

@laurenmakena77096 жыл бұрын
As an artist that has been working for awhile, I’m going to thank you for this and say you are correct. The people saying it’s just a baby’s face are not. Cats are so cute because they perfectly combine baby cuteness with the “angel face” that we find pleasing in adults. Check out most models - their jaw/nose sticks out farther from their skull in profile than average, just like the cat’s muzzle.
@ergojosh6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes thats exactly why I didn’t find too much help from babies. They are just simplified adults. Cats are adult animals that still manage to be appealing due to those things you mentioned, intentional differences that can persist beyond infancy.
@kamashii12906 жыл бұрын
The thing with baby's is, and I think this is why many people say Disney structured their characters faces like this, that there is something called scheme of childlike or cuteness. That means, if we see a person with a wide forehead, big eyes, a snub nose, chubby cheeks and fluffy hair, it triggers our hormones. We are attracted to them and immediately want to protect them. This is how nature makes sure baby's are cared for, even if they loose their parents. The same things happen throughout pregnancy by the way. Because of the amount of hormones women can stand the pain of giving birth and later all the screaming of their child, because the hormones make parents so attached to the baby that they would even take a bullet fot them. So I would say, the facial structure can come from both cats and baby's, but the originals of that we like this structure is that scheme.

Try taking a cat picture and tracing the important shapes. I usually start with the head as a circle with a tiny muzzle on the bottom. Drawing the actual facial plane is a really helpful tip, especially when books tend to only include a cross-section of the head. Honestly I would love to get that screen protector to do digital art on a tablet. I hate how painfully smooth the screens are when drawing. I don't know why but it just puts me off and makes it difficult to have a sense of the proportions that I made

Not a fan of anime, prefer Western comic book styles. Coincidentally I'm not a fan of cats either. More of a dog person. 🐕

@@JMulvy so funny that you said this because by the end of this video I was wondering if dog people would prefer classic comic super hero styles. You could say their long faces are inspired by the long muzzle of dogs. Thanks for validating my own thoughts a bit 😄

I've been trying to find channels to actually help me with my art and give tips, because I've been struggling with finding my art style. I think I'm going to love this channel because this video is very helpful to a younger person who is struggling with their art. Thank you so much!!
