Anderw Loomis himself in his book "Drawing the head and hands" mention on page 36: "Varaiety in spacing creates types In order to create differences in type and character, we may decide not to follow the basic measurements or divisions to meticulously. By varying the proportions of the three divisions of the face, we come up with a good deal of variety in the resoults. There are thousands of possible combinations. It is fun to experiment with them." So problem with Loomis method is not method but that most of people who use it or teach it use only most basic form of it. In his book Loomis describe many variants of this method, he describe separetly method for men, women, boy, girls and babies and for different types of heads and faces. I strongly reccomand everyone to read this book, it's avalable in digital form for free.

Yeah he does explain it. Before Loomis even shows the method he shows a variety of face types. Then once he shows the method he writes how shifting the lines leads to a variety of shapes and expressions. No one reads the book apparently.

Not only does Andrew Loomis' book "Heads & Hands" cover what you explained here, His book "Fun With A Pencil" also shows how to draw heads using irregular circles and ovals. (Though, more in an american-cartoon style). Andrew Loomis books are great, if you can follow them.

I draw heavily stylized drawings so I don’t really use the Loomis method because of how it favors realism drawings more. I use the box method which can also be a great partner with the Loomis method as you can just adjust the size of the box as well! Thanks for the video DLAS! Exactlyyyyyyy I'm a new artist and what I found to be wrong with the loomis method is just that - the realism. When I first started, I realized that I never really knew how to draw heads. I was watching one of PewDiePie's "drawing for X days" videos and he mentioned some Korean youtuber who does tutorials. So I looked him up, followed one of his tutorials and vois la, that was the first thing I've ever drawn in a sketchbook. That tutorial was based on the loomis method. Then I saw your video on it in the sidebar, clicked it and watching it caused it to become engraved as the first piece of "art theory" I've ever learnt. Then when I actually started drawing things I wanted to draw, specifically cartoon characters, I tried applying the method to cartoon faces from reference only to get frustrated. Great video as always.

It's not that the Loomis method *is bad* ... It's how you *apply it!* When I was in college, we learned the loomis method and then learned how to apply it to our individual drawing style. (It's also very useful in animation, for maintaining continuity.) I (begrudgingly) learned it and have used it ever since. I say "begrudgingly" because, at first, I thought it was a whole lot of extra work that I didn't need to do. Later I found out that it was saving me time in the long run because I didn't have to keep going back and fixing my work. Now, I use it all the time!

The major lesson I learned from Loomis was simply that when drawing heads, you should conceive of them as 3D objects. e.g. for cartoony heads you can use an egg shape as base - but you should think of it as an egg shape, not a flat oval, with contour lines running around it (which greatly help with foreshortening, and with preventing you from misaligning features like eyes). I find it is useful to think in this way even when drawing a portrait from a reference photo.

I think the problem (starting at 4:00) lies with these tutorials only teaching the basics of the Loomis Method. You can find thousands of videos on the Loomis Method, but they're all the same. Even the so-called 'in-depth' ones just teach how to draw the 'default' human head, without demonstrating its flexibility. As a result, people encounter difficulties because they’re limited to what they’ve been taught, believing that nothing beyond a 'perfect' human head can be drawn. In his book Drawing the Head and Hands, Loomis, on pages 36 to 40, shows how to draw heads with different shapes, sizes, and proportions simply by adjusting the lines (brow line, nose line, hairline, etc.). I’ve personally drawn heads with bizarre proportions using the Loomis Method in my practice sessions, and I’ve even copied portraits of people. The key is identifying the facial landmarks and adjusting the lines accordingly. We don’t need yet another video teaching the Loomis Method; we have plenty of those already. What we really need are videos that explore the flexibility of the Loomis Method, challenging beginners to create heads in various shapes and sizes.

Yea I think some people misunderstood that the Loomis method is a template It's designed to be modifiable and give you better proportions I don't think they don't like the Loomis, they just don't know how to use it. For example that one drawing using it 3:38 was just using it wrong. They were using the basic foundational Loomis when they should have modified the proportions to fit the reference That's why Its drawn the way it is, so you can modify the shapes to your liking but still keep proportional accuracy

I try both drawing and sculpting over the Loomis method and it works wonder. Of course it has to be adjusted for each individual but it's easy because with sculpting you are forced to master the geometry and anatomy. Transition to any other style becomes much easier

Who was the first to determine these things? Did we all do it, because this is a Republic? Or was it Arbitrary? NO! The one who took the napkin first determined all of these things! The rules of this world are determined by that same principle of ‘right or left?’! In a Society like this table, a state of equilibrium, once one makes the first move, everyone must follow! In every era, this World has been operating by this napkin principle. And the one who ‘takes the napkin first’ must be someone who is respected by all. It’s not that anyone can fulfill this role... Those that are despotic or unworthy will be scorned. And those are the ‘losers’. In the case of this table, the ‘eldest’ or the ‘Master of the party’ will take the napkin first... tbh i like how bridgeman suggests to draw the head. Just start with a square, attach some skull bits/face bits. I think what I use is an amalgamation of what i recently memorized from bridgman and an old and totally legit digital class from Scott Eaton. I find it much more specific and hence harder to get wrong than the loomis method, and I find memorizing the skull underneath helps tons! the more you understand the anatomy underneath, the more you can morph the face around it, i suppose, whether you're shooting for something realistic or otherwise. Sameskull syndrome is many times worse than sameface syndrome! the skull is the foundation of the face!

I'd love a video on the Loomis method - I practiced along with your last video and it was so helpful. I like to view it as a tool, I guess like what you say in the video, something that is supposed to work for you, your way & just playing with it as a guideline I was able to get lots of different looks, that I customized to work for me. So an in-depth tutorial would be super cool to me - I understand if it won't happen tho if that's not the majority vote. I'm just of the opinion that more tools can't hurt the artist. Btw, the irony of using Tom Cruise as an example of perfect proportions & meanwhile his famous teeth - just makes it all the more true, no one is an exactly perfect model. Thanks Marcel for your videos - I wasn't challenged to grow my art style in over a decade, I just got complacent until recently I began experimenting again & finding your vids was one of the best things to happen for me. I've been trying to get better at drawing faces from different angles and I started using the Loomis method. But when I tried to apply my stylization it always seemed to fall apart. Now I understand why. Thank you.

Like most artists such as myself, I relatively don’t use the loomis method method because it’s a little bit more complicated and usually for its realism and how it can come out the same sometimes. I kinda use your basic head method the circle one front and 2 eye lines then any Jaw shape that fits a character like hexagonal, pointy or squarish Then slap some ears on the sides of that head.
