@@deftrascal1626 TL;DR for those who can't be bothered to click a link: Danya says the ONLY problem he has with Hikaru is that Hikarua has very little patience for _others_ cancelling online games, but also shows very little consideration when _he's_ the one who cancels a game with short to no notice. Personally, I wouldn't take look at this fairly trivial dispute between Hikaru and Danya as decisive evidence that Hikaru is a genuinely toxic guy within the community.

Like Eric said, streamers with a larger audience often get to spoonfeed the narrative. It's not that it's a bad thing so many new chess fans are watching hikaru, but you need the self awareness to realize you're not gonna get a nuanced take on this by listening only to Hikaru's side of the story. Its fine if you wanna listen to one streamer exclusively, but don't go parroting their one-sided opinion, at that point its just obfuscating things and making it harder for everyone involved to be treated fairly.

Exactly, it strikes me every time how immature his character is and I don't even watch him much. It is like watching a child. Also I have some credentials to say these things, I'm a psychologist. I'm not trash talking or even thinking negatively about him, but Hikaru would do well to reflect on himself and aim to improve his character. Also he might want to address it publicly and say that he wants to be a better person. I'd recommend him to see a counsellor. He probably has the money for it and it makes personal improvement much easier. A better character is definitely money well spent.

You are spot on. Hikaru doesn't need detractors; he does a good enough job himself. The only way for him to get better is to just come out live admitting that he is emotionally stunted, probably because of his extremely limited upbringing (like many others at the top of chess, to be fair) and that he acknowledges this fact and will try to be a better person and "grow up" and this includes swallowing his pride when he is wrong, admitting he is wrong, and promise to try not to repeat his mistake. Otherwise he is not worth watching in my opinion. The only exception is it is ok to watch his channel during a tournament for the commentary. His channel has often had by far the best commentary during tournaments.

Kasparov? Every GM and person who knows these guys personally are vouching for Eric. All the Hikaru fans are arguing about the character of a man they don't know personally. That's why it's really clear who is telling the truth and who needs to reassess their actions. Having said that, I do feel bad for Hikaru. It doesn't sound like many people like him and that can be pretty lonely. Which might be why he is so toxicly competitive and mean to people. I think Hikaru's is a case of social ineptitude. He was homeschooled iirc, on top of that he probably wasn't spending time socializing with other kids. And as a teen/adult, if having social interactions with others doesn't feel like second nature, good fking luck making friends and bonding with people Because you're not picking up social cues(e.g. whether you're making the other party feel uncomfortable, or if they're interested in the topic/story you're talking about etc). You might come across as arrogant or rude even if you didn't mean to be. So Hikaru is IMO sometimes, arrogant/rude/immature you name it. But the real problem is imo he doesn't even realize or admit that he's those things. He seems to have this edgy "me against the world" mentality. Not everybody's out to get you man gees. It's not like social skills can't be learned, but he doesn't seem to be even trying.

On ICC usually when he lost a game he would immediately log off, and I notice recently he has this Tourettes like thing where he repeats himself constantly, or just matter of factly insult other players. There was a time back in the day he was claiming publicly that Carlsen was afraid of him, and then Carlsen seemed to have made a conscious decision to destroy him every time they met over the board and pretty much succeeded, and carlsen holds some ridiculously lopsided plus score over him in all formats. Carlsen also made a point of decimating him in some chess.com speed chess final some years back, I think Nakamura was streaming from Africa or somewhere like that and Carlsen made a special point of humiliating him in the bullet portion as well, which was supposed to be naka's forte. The stories of Naka's rudeness are legendary and you would be hard pressed to find someone that he has lost to that he didn't accuse of cheating, so there you go.

Poor analogy. Blunder implies that Eric miscalculated. In reality, Hikaru is using an engine (KZbin mods) to steal the game from him.

No wonder Hikaru is on such a push for online chess. Who wants to be in a room where you are the most disliked person and you have tension with everyone?

Seems Ben Finegold was right all along. Wonder if Cr1tikal or whatever will make another video about this.

Right about what? Calling people Negative Talents in life? Both were ass hats at that time but Hikaru basically masking it well.

As someone who got into watching chess last year, I always thought Eric and Ben were toxic while Hikaru was just pompous but had the chops to back it up. Over this past year I watched as Hikaru started to show his true colors and now after all Eric and Ben have been through, I no longer believe Eric and Ben are toxic. It is infact Hikaru who is the toxic one here and I have revoked my sub to his channel in favor of subbing to Eric and Ben. Hikaru does not deserve my support with his blatant bad behavior at the moment.

People who don't know Hikaru before he became "born-again" with all this new corporate clout should just pay attention to their recommended videos after watching this one..

I remember watching a game on Christof Selecki's channel, Chess Explained, between Christof and Hikaru. Christof won and when he began analyzing the game, as he does for EVERY game, Hikaru got upset complaining Christof didn't have the right to do that. Why? I guess he felt insulted that a lower ranked player would analyze a game he lost. Frankly he's just a poor sport

This is they way Hikaru has ALWAYS been. Back in 2019 he banned me from his Twitch channel FOR SAYING "HE LOOKS LIKE HE'S NOT IN THE MOOD FOR CHESS RIGHT NOW". At that point I realized I'm not dealing with a 30 year old grown up, but rather a salty child who just cant accept genuine criticism and is going to silence ANYONE who does anything against his interest.
