I always love how Ole describes Frank Andersson, a former world Greco-Roman wrestling Olympic bronze and world champion, as a guy that "could wrestle a little bit" :)
@Millwall773 жыл бұрын
Frank was a great athlete and could do great wrestling moves but as a worker....he didnt get it. No charisma, he often did weird pauses in the matches where it looked that he didnt know what to do and many times he just looked like he was trying to things he had seen on tv but in reality he couldnt pull it off. In some sense like Steve Mcmichaels (but not as botchy and clumpsy) And about Ole: He has also called Lou Thesz 'quite good' Lou Thesz....'QUITE GOOD'

@@Millwall77 he definitely had charisma (I'm Swedish so I know of him from plenty of other contexts), but I would say that it didn't come across that well in his wrestling career in WCW. He didn't have charisma in the way a Ric Flair or Roddy Piper had, but he was a guy who would generate a lot of legendary stories because of crazy, funny things he said and did, and that definitely made him an entertaining character.

@@Millwall77 yes, I think a big problem was he didn't really have the passion for it, at least not at this point. He was in it for the money. I remember in an interview back then that he said he would give wrestling three years. Bischoff said he left because of family reasons, but who knows if that was the real reason or just an excuse. He did return to pro wrestling in Stockholm later in his life, but that was with a lot less pressure and way more immediate success and celebration. Don't get me wrong, I like Frank.

Vince Russo was the catalyst to WCW’s demise. WCW wasn’t succeeding because of established talent hoarding the spotlight and they weren’t creating and promoting any new talent with exception to Bill Goldberg and DDP. To give Russo credit, he began Booker T’s push which was long overdue. When you look at the totality of WCW’s failure, there was no organization, too many wrestlers given “creative control,” and not enough new talent being promoted. Greed killed WCW along with the established talent being apathetic to the success of the company. The established talent only cared so long as their bottom line was satisfied.

Brimstone balked at this and left the deal. Why don't people ever talk about the shady side deals in pro wrestling??
@Jim-Tuner3 жыл бұрын
There is some talk about this stuff over the years. But the problem is that everyone just knows a tiny piece of what was going on rather than the whole thing. There is alot of talk about corruption on the merchandise side in WCW. That they were setting up business relationships and side-deals that funneled WCW merchandise money through people without them doing anything. There was a wrestler who supposedly had a side-company that was doing posters for WCW. I can totally believe that Eric Bishoff was doing side-deals with wrestlers at the power plant too. But this is the first time I've heard of it. WCW was more corrupt than most companies in that rather than the owner taking advantage of the employees, you had employees essentially stealing from the company and being allowed to do unethical deals you could never get away with anywhere else. And that kind of behavior is one of the important reasons why WCW eventually just went out of business.

"Ole is mad he didn't make the money guys were making now" Eric Bischoff overpaying talent is one of the biggest reasons they went out of business. You had curtain jerkers making 6 figures when Vince was doing better ratings and not paying anywhere near that for the same talent. When AOL saw the payroll versus what money was actually made, it didn't make any sense to keep it open. As for BJ knocking out Ole, this is the only person I have ever heard claim he knocked Ole out. Ole's claim in BJ hit him to try and get Ole to swing on him so Bischoff could fire him, which sounds way more reasonable. All in all do I think Bischoff had a good mind for wrestling? Decent, one great idea. Do I think he had a great mind for how to run a business, absolutely. Business savvy, not so much wrestling savvy. However, that's why he had more success at WCW than anyone else. Ole, Watts, Dusty were wrestling people, not business people, and there's a big difference between the wrestling business and actual business
@sabot4ge3 жыл бұрын
Ole was mad at the wrestlers in the 1980s too for making more money than he did. Specifically Jim Cornette's salary as a manger, which was 6 figures back then. He figured that he put blood sweat and tears into the business, and only managed to make $50k per year at the most. Then when he became middle-aged in the 80s, guys like Cornette came in making $100k after only a few years in the business. He had that attitude before guaranteed contracts and Eric Bischoff. Plus, Bischoff didn't have any control over what the talent was payed. He could make recommendations, but he had to work within his budget. Turner had a huge finance department that watched his every move; He never went over-budget, and payed talent from the budget that he had for that year. Macho Man wasn't payed a dime for example by Bischoff..Slim Jim payed him off for years due to the sponsorship. The problem was the main event guys who came from WWF like Nash, Hall, and Hogan..they had non-compete clauses which meant if a new talent came in making more than them, they had to get the same too. Those guys milked WCW, that small group. Guys like Jericho getting $175k per year didn't hurt; guys like Hogan getting percentages of payperviews and millions and millions did. They could have used a portion of Hogan's pay for new talent.
@cybernightzero58913 жыл бұрын
Everyone knows that Eric (Even though Jim Herd started it) was paying people all kinds of money for doing little to nothing. Guys were getting paid guaranteed contracts and not wrestling dates. WCW failed because of him, and I dare say the wrestling business in general went downhill because of him. IN retrospect, It took a while, but Ole was right.

No he couldn't. Barnett wasn't a booker, he was an old school promoter. And once that time had passed all he could do is cash in on his rep to be a yes man for guys like Herd.

Eric Bischoff is a corporate business guy, not a bad thing, but that’s who he is. That by itself was the issue between him & guys like Ole, Gagne, and others that were the old schools wrestling business.

I call bullshit on Bischoffs recount of ole! Jim Cornette has talked about the situation between Eric and Ole and how Eric fired Oles son Bryant and Cornette gave Oles son a job. Jim mentioned that he was with Ole and his son Bryant filming a promo outside the power plant when Eric showed up 30 minutes after Ole told Jim that the stooges at the power plant were probably calling Eric. When Eric showed up he pulled Ole aside and told him he wasn’t using his best judgement and Ole said he was only helping his son who you(Eric) fired. Eric left and the next day Eric fired Ole. Not only that but Bischoff says Ole was probably bitter towards the young talent who were making far more money that he ever did yet Jim Cornette said Ole was making half a million in the late 70s And Ole was making even more when he teamed up with the other guys to form Championship Wrestling from Georgia to go against Vince. Cornette mentioned Ole was done with wrestling and only came back for bigger money that he wasn’t getting as much as Sting, Luger or the Road Warriors but he was making far more than the rest in the late 80s and by the 90s as booker a lot more. Jim mentioned by the time Ole took on the job as head booker that Wcw was so far in the shits from guys like Herd that Ole felt if they were going to pay someone big ass money to do the show why not him. He knew the show no matter what, wasn’t going to go anywhere no matter who ran it so why not take the money.

Eric made the wrong move in firing Ole. He should have kept him around and forced him to adopt a bullfighter gimmick, the crown jewel of which would have been everyone calling him Olé instead of Ole.

I think that something that needs to be analyzed in modern society is what it really means to be "professional". What does that word mean? It's somebody who does his best to maximize his effectiveness in his profession, thus the term. Is being feminized (no cussing, no direct hostile confrontation; every inevitable conflict has to be passive-aggressive) really what it means to be a professional? In almost all cases, I'd say "no". In executive positions, I'd say "definitely not". We're falling apart in large part because """"professionals"""" aren't very honest and objective-oriented at all. They're concerned with political correctness, and they won't speak respectfully with subordinates, bosses, peers, and partners.

I've spent maybe 3 or 400 hours listening to stevie ray, Russo, bischoff, jr, brother love, and I dont believe biachoff would make any move unless he was sure. Because Ted Turner was walking on eggshells, and so was Eric. They weren't wanted. Wcw. And listening to him, they didnt have job titles, and if u hear bischoff, soon as he was hired to run it. He cut all house shows. And imagine that much staff was involved in that.
