I thought the same thing, but he's actually got an Active Mid-Boost circuit in his strat. It gives it that fuzzy, almost humbucker-y sound. It's a fairly cheap upgrade for a start too.

I love EC, but I wished he’d recreate the 68 recording. I’ll bet even he listens to it and says “damn, did I really do that?” Then again, I think I read where he says he won’t listen to his old stuff. Eric, you’ve earned that right.

Eric has said that he finds most of his old stuff unlistenable. I think if he were younger he would probably use the word "cringe." I don't share that opinion of course, and obviously neither do you. But he never really liked his famous Crossroads solo, he only ever thought it was "OK." He also maintains that he was listening slightly off beat which lent the solo an unusual rhythmical character, so really what people think is his alleged genius is him screwing up.

What I love about Henry Spinetti is that he's always a 350% on them drums. He just loves playing on stage, even in 2023. Eric should have him alongside as his regular drummer buddy. He is a beast.

This is probably one of the best versions of Crossroads I have heard Eric play post-Cream. Exquisite solos. But, I don't think the singer duo helped one bit. Just one. thing missing though: that wild sense of abandon that you get from trying to keep up with his admittedly technically wrong playing that we heard on Wheels of Fire. Man, THAT was a solo unlike anything else I have ever heard Eric play. I know he didn't like that version, and he's explained why, but I'm sorry. I just gotta disagree. Somehow, Cream made that version work in the end despite the "mistakes." But man, what a f*cking ride! Cream didn't merely "play." They roared.
