I suspect that the people who said it was like a whole different song were taking about the acoustic version that Clapton did when he appeared on MTV’s unplugged. That is a less edgy, more jazz-oriented arrangements. There also are concert videos where he performed that version. I personally prefer the angsty, rock version so I’m happy that you reacted to this live version. Clapton live is amazing. I highly recommend you react to the following Clapton live performances: Holy Mother (this is a brilliant live version and has Phil Collins on drums m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/apeoZJ2QZ8eNipI), and a great live duet with Tina Turner on Tearing Us Apart m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYnLmYSEf6p1jrM (with Phil Collins on drums, Elton John on keyboards, and Mark Knopfler and Roger May on rhythm guitar); the duet with Paul McCartney on Something m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/jp2Qc4GKmq-LoNk and his solo performance of While My Guitar Gently Weeps m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/eaO3fpZonpt_sMU from the George Harrison tribute concert, and Clapton and BB King trading licks on The Thrill Is Gone m.kzbin.info/www/bejne/nJisfoFjotCtiM0

Actually, it was due to the slow hand clap that the crowd at The Marquee Club, in London, would spontaneously join into whenever ever Clapton, while playing there with The Yardbirds, would break a string and have to re-string it. The crowd clapped along rhythmically while Eric saw to his instrument, readying it for the next song. He was introduced by club owner, Giorgio Gomelsky, as Eric "Slowhand" Clapton on Five Live Yardbirds, which was recorded on March 20, 1964 and released in December of that year.
