I was BLESSED to have seen STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN in Chapel Hill NC on April 17th 1988 at MEMORIAL HALL it only held a couple of thousand people. Right as Stevie Ray took the stage and started to play LOVE STRUCK BABY. A transformer blew out and there was NO POWER for a hour. By the time Stevie Ray got back on stage which was only Three Feet off the ground, alot of people had gone. Stevie Ray said, "FOR THOSE WHO STUCK AROUND WHY DON'T I PLAY A SPECIAL SHOW FOR YOU!" I was up front standing in front his microphone STEVIE RAY was sweating on me and I was able to put my hand on his SRV GUITAR! 👏 I'M TELLING YOU HE PLAYED (4 1/2 HRS) VOODOO CHILD WITH HIS TEETH AND BEHIND HIS HEAD! BY THE TIME STEVIE RAY VAUGHAN FINISHED PLAYING. HE SAID, "I BELIEVE I'VE PLAYED EVERYTHING I KNOW" /LAUGHING/ HE THANK THOSE FOR STICKING, TELL Y'ALL FRIEND'S WHAT THEY MISSED. ADIOS AMIGOS! To all of you bashing Clapton. He has said that he feels it is his life's work to keep the blues alive in honor of those who came before. Which means men of color. They started it and people like Elvis heard them and they were hooked. Clapton does not have a prejudice bone in his body he wrote songs with Robert Cray and has worked with BB, Buddy and many more including Tracy Chapman. He has walked through the fires of hell and sold most all of his precious guitars to help fund the rehab he opened to save people who are fighting a fight he himself fought and won, He is a man of character and humbled in the presence of greatness. I have never seen him act like he was superior to anyone.

Lots of folks here especially my age who grew up with the "British Invasion" music don't realize THAT music was inspired by black musicians in the US. The Beatles, DC5, the Stones... it was all R&B and covered by those Brit bands. So hats off to ALL musicians who honor the roots.

If you play music you owe it to music to play whatever you play to the best of your ability. As for being a technical musician Eric Clapton has no superiors and almost as few equals. No musician has ever been more lyrical than Stevie Ray Vaugn. His instrument speaks to people. Playing a guitar is not what Stevie Ray does....its what he is. He only had problems when he would have a lapse of memory and forget the music. If you play music you may not be Stevie or Eric but you still owe it to music to play it your best. Talk about a peacemaker....music is a universal language. I can play with a trumpet player from Brasil. I can play with a man in Uganda playing on a thirty year old horn...and a Count in Europe on the finest instrument money can buy none of us may converse with each other....until we open the music then we can say things that we have always wanted to say.

It’s a testament to how important he was and is.

@marie s Except I believe Stevie Ray Vaughn wasn't at that live concert. These were most of the guys that played with Stevie on his final tour, the night before his helicopter crashed into that mountain, killing him. All the video footage of Stevie Ray? Was taken from his appearance on Austin City Limits. This was a tribute video, so it's obvious that Stevie Ray wasn't actually on that stage playing with all those blues legends. If you notice? He's never on the stage at the same time as everyone else, interacting with them. He had tragically already died by this point.

IMHO SRV, Clapton and Buddy Guy played on the same level this time, the result was an epic ensemble. SRV was great, like Jimi Hendrix and Duane Allman. All these greats were inspired by EC, perhaps even more than by B.B. King and Buddy Guy. And all these have always recognized how crucial Clapton has been for Blues and Rock history. Thanks for sharing this audio, it would be nice to see the real video.

I was fortunate to see SRV 3 times. Once he opened for Jeff Back in 1989 and twice I saw him at the Alpine Valley show in 1990. I was literally about 2,500 ft away when his helicopter crashed. I don't believe anyone heard it. I remember driving home that night (back to Chicago suburbs) and it was very foggy, so foggy that I barely could see the hood of my car. I was quite concerned about hitting the car in front of me. I only learned of the terrible tragedy the following morning. That night we lost SRV and a few years ago (2008) us fans lost another phenomenal blues player who played at that show: Jeff Healey. R.I.P. guys.

SRV was and still is so important to me. I was given a mixed tape by a friend and I played the music I loved most from it and asked who is this? This is the most incredible music I have ever heard and he told me it was SRV. I said I would love to see him live and he told that had just died recently in a helicopter crash. I couldn't believe it but I went out and bought 4 of his tapes right away because I needed to hear this for the rest of my life anyway. My girlfriends all asked why I had so many of his tapes and I showed them that he was my favorite guitarist. I don't think they cared but I have his live album on vinyl and it so amazing that you forget that you have to try it over. My favorite album and I call it the SRV experience!!!🖤🖤🖤

To all the lovers of great guitar playing. You cannot crown one as the greatest of all time you can only choose your favorites. Each has their own style. My top five favorites include Roy Buchanan Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Mick Taylor and Stevie Ray Vaughan. And that’s only scratching the surface but of that list Stevie Ray Vaughan seemed to be having the most fun playing the guitar, you rarely saw him without a smile on his face! I saw him in the early days at the Decade in Pittsburgh and also on his last tour. It is such a shame that while walking the tight rope of sobriety we lost him so tragically, because he was making such a joyful noise unto us all.
