When he wrote this, Clapton wanted to prove that he actually could write a love song. In doing so, he managed to write one of the greatest love songs ever.

When I married my second wife in 2015 we had a small wedding with a guitar player as our entertainment. We asked him if he knew Waiting for a Girl like you by Foreigner so we could dance our first slow dance as husband and wife. He didn't , but he knew Wonderful Tonight. I danced my first slow dance with my new wife and I started crying with joy. Out of nowhere. Now when I hear this song I always remember that day and how blessed I am to have her.

Angela, me thinks that David was using this song to tell you how beautiful you look to him ... and if he wasn't, then "I" am (i.e., it was ALL MY IDEA) !!! You are just a very special woman, and I wish the best for you always. BTW, I want you to know, you make ME tear up every time you do, and I thank you for that. Finally, to answer your question, yes, this song was written about his then wife, Pattie Boyd, an international model and one time wife of both Eric Clapton AND George Harrison, the same woman he was talking about when he wrote Layla.

Yes the same woman he was singing about in layla ( real name was patry boyd ) a British model and at this time his wife . Her first husband was George Harrison from the Beatles. Honestly the woman has about 6 classic songs written about her . Both eric and George wrote several songs each George Harrison wrote a wonderful song about his divorce from her .( without you ) eventually she cheated on eric and they split up. But his song from cream are amazing and his solo song are quite personal.

Latter song was written when Patti and Eric were together. You may want to check out the 3rd hit song about Patti Boyd, Something by George Harrison from the epic Beatles album, Abbey Road. I listened to an interview with Pattie Boyd and she talked about George Harrison and Eric Clapton. Pattie said her marriage to George was on the rocks. George was seeing other woman. Eric had expressed interest in Pattie (to put it mildly). So She broke up with George and married Eric. George was at the wedding, so there were no major hard feelings. Eventually, Patti and Eric broke up too. Patti said, her true love was George. He was the love of her life. They just didn't work out.
