Confidence: Confidence is generally described as a state of being certain either that a hypothesis or prediction is correct or that a chosen course of action is the best or most effective.
@amindlost10 жыл бұрын
confidence c.1430, from L. confidentia, from confidentem, prp. of confidere "to have full trust or reliance" "Faith" can be a synonym, but it is not the Latin root of confidence. Faith, in the context of religion, is believing without evidence.

Greydon Square, Love how you took the wind out of Eric Hovind, it was beautiful, thank-you. Paul
@Yusuf118710 жыл бұрын
Hovind tries to make a false equivocation at the end by implication. When he says that the root of faith and confidence are the same in latin, that is irrelevant. The concepts of faith and confidence are different regardless of their origin - like many other words with the same origin - and most importantly, the REASON you are confident in a belief is what we're debating .
@ScientiaPerceptum10 жыл бұрын

It is true that faith and confidence has a similar origin with the old french word "fidere", but you are correct that they have different uses in Modern English. It is almost like trying to pose similarity in meaning to the words like accuracy and cure which have a similar origin in Latin "cura" which means to cure...They mean different things.

"confidence" does not come from the Latin for "faith." "Confident-em" means something similar to faith: "firmly trusting, reliant; self-confident; bold, daring; audacious, impudent" (OED), and perhaps at this point I'm splitting hairs. But it doesn't literally mean "faith"; Hovind is imbibing his own understanding of faith in his understanding the etymology of the word "confidence." Besides, it doesn't matter the Latinate root; the words mean related but different things in today's vernacular.

also, I have to wonder, why doesn't Hovind argue against atheists at the Reason Rally with using creationist arguments instead of trying to use tricky semantics? correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Hovind's known for their creationist ministry? if creationism is so definitely true, and if the evidence is for it is so strong, then why not focus on arguments based on creationism? the fact that Mr. Hovind refuses to do this against people well-versed in science seems quite odd to me.
@jacopman11 жыл бұрын
Why do faith based views need to have defenders of the faith? Why does Hovind claim his ministry helps strengthen the faith of the believers? If the God of the bible is a fact...like gravity...why do you need to have apologists like Hovind, WLC or any others? I don't see scientists having studies to strengthen their belief that gravity works or that they have to defend the workings of gravity from nonbelievers. Gravity is a fact of reality but faith is not a fact in reality.....that is why.

yes, and that no one else would have been nearly as cooperative. i would not stand and let someone ask the same question over and over like an idiot. Eric had a point and admitidly it was not a bad point, but it droned on for 45 mins. 45 mins of "but your not sure". its the exact same as we have all heard 1000 times before. its pointinf out that athesim allows doubt. thats all he managed to accomplish when the hiulight was, you have to abandon atheism to prove there is not a god.
@TheMarkNessMonster12 жыл бұрын
"Fides"(the root that Hovind is referencing as the eytomological foundation of confidence) is not a term that strictly means faith. Faith is one interpretation of the term, the other are reliance and trust, which are terms placed upon concepts, people, or things that have evidence in one form or another which has caused the earning of reliance or trust. Hovind loves to play word games, but I'm the better cruciverbalist here, and I know how to use the internet as well.
@JustinArdolino12 жыл бұрын
So it turns out that the interviewer is correct in that the word "confidence" comes from the Latin root word "fid" which means "faith." This does nothing to explain the fact that the claims made by the interviewer and his belief system are true and factual. This seemed like a Red Herring to me, having stated it with the confidence of a person who knows the interview is drawing to a close and will have the last word by virtue of that fact alone.
@sdasdssadsd660211 жыл бұрын
lol ok so confidence is on par with faith. I mean, ya it depends on how you use the word so what..... what does that have to do with anything about god. Hey eric did you know that faith is a belief that is not based on proof. Now thats something for god. How can you have faith in god but then have proof of his existence.
@s1lkysl1m8312 жыл бұрын
ok disregard my response to you in your inbox. relying on my hs latin education, ha, ive conjured up memories of the latin, "confidere". thus, i see that you are correct. but yes, more importantly, we are missing the point. getting ourselves tied up in word games! ha
@michaelbutcher624311 жыл бұрын
Well done Greydon. The only way to absolute knowledge is the admission that we don't know everything. While he claims to know God and know everything, he can't produce that God. I do believe they'll try to crucify Kirk though, that'd be nice.
@annarandell12 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even give Hovind that much credit. Fidere means "to BELIEVE", so confidence means "WITH BELIEF" FAITH is a BELIEF without evidence. Ergo, confidence is not faith. I do agree that it was a cheap shot by Hovind but it is completely unsurprising.

Eric hoven's second question is a gotcha question. He wants to get him to say that they wouldn't worship the Christian God even if he was real. And supposedly if an atheist says that that makes him foolish and unreasonable. Gradon turns it right around on him with a logical and eloquent answer

@kainedamo12 жыл бұрын
It is irrelevant if Hovind thinks that the word confidence comes from the word faith when Greydon defined how he meant to use the word - "Confidence in things that have evidence to support them" That is NOT faith. Having faith in something is to have a belief WITHOUT evidence. This is just another example of Hovind being a dishonest twit and trying to trip people up with word play rather than ask meaningful questions with context.

What I found hilarious is that eric hovind actually asked Greydon Square if he "had any beef against Christianity"... LMAO! He seemed like he was a little scared because he was talking to a large black man so he had to bring out his "street cred" in his knowledge that the word "beef" was slang for "a grudge" or "ill feelings". You're so slimy, Eric. I notice in all of these "interviews", you just ask a bunch of leading questions over and over, hoping the person will slip up so you can go "Ah-HA!" It didn't go so hot did it? I saw how irritated you got when Greydon wouldn't let you put words in his mouth. You tend to give a slicker presentation than your dad did, but I think he'd probably be embarrassed to see how you got handled at the Reason Rally.

confidence the feeling or belief that one can rely on someone or something; firm trust. greydon has this confidence because of facts and testable evidence to back it up not faith while yes faith and confidence have similar meaning there is a difference. greydon just wants proof that god is loving, exists, and so on for him to even consider worshiping him and none of that is in the bible. faith strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion, based on spiritual apprehension rather than proof.
