Eric, I love the videos of you traveling around Japan. Your storytelling skills are exceptional. Please always give us as much audio as possible. Even though you considered doing this video as a silent video, I always tune in just to hear the stories that you tell. I can just put the video on during my work day and just listen to your travel narrative...very soothing. These videos - like the ones on Hokkaido - are just awesome. My family has probably watched the Hokkaido series several times over and we all have our favorite parts of that series. For me, I just really like the prospect of the journey you are taking us on. It's great when you take us around a city/region (at a slow pace) and you just observe and then tell us what you're observing - along with mixing in your very interesting stories/insights about how things relate in life. Exceptional job once again! These are gold!

21:05 I was there in the early 2000's and the UV lamps were there. They've clearly replaced them because they look newer but they've been there at least 15 years. My Japanese friend explained the three streams of water offer wisdom, wealth and longevity if you drink from them, but not all three because then the gods think you're being greedy and you get nothing. You gotta pick two.

So sad that most of us will NEVER see Kyoto like that. I'm glad I got to see it 15 years ago before the tourist boom. It's an amazing city, which suffers from being TOO successful for tourism.

I was in Kyoto in March 2020 just before the lockdowns came into effect. Even though various places had been closed and seasonal events cancelled to prevent infections it was by far the most enjoyable time I've spent there. You don't realise how nice Kyoto is when there are 10K Chinese,10K European and 100K Japanese tourists stumbling over each other.

Crazy to see Kyoto this empty. I always prefered the smaller less famous temples/shrines because of the more solemn vibe. Must be a real treat to experience the bigger sites in this way!

What a pleasant way to see Kyoto, Eric! Personally, I like the talking bits because you describe the things we can't feel just by watching and provide context. For instance, the Kanji Museum seems really cool and interesting, but if we just saw the sign and building we wouldn't know anything about it, like the Kanji of the Year contest. Dogen had a recent vid where he coined a bunch of Kanji and it was really fun and funny. How did Kyde do on her JLPT? What level was she testing on?

It was nice to have an “Eric” video, just absorbing YOUR vibe. I liked the dialog and I rarely have a chance to absorb a looong video without sound. I like to do things and watch/listen to vids. My hands are always busy. “It feels more like you’re drunk” 😂 understood, perfectly! I see what u mean about the food truck, but it was tucked away and the signs were black and white...maybe as sedate as it could get? Appreciate you getting pics of the food, although you didn’t film in the restaurant. You could film, then dub over it in mute, in the case of music? I wonder if they kicked people out to covert that place into a hotel? Very common in other parts of the world.

The 45 second no-talk intro was really great! Would love to see a full video in that style.
@alocino963 жыл бұрын
I must say I m not sad to have a talking video instead of a mute one. I liked this video very much I don't really know why, maybe because Eric seemed more comfortable in front of the camera or maybe for the editing, I liked the snarky remarks written through the video, but I liked it very much, maybe it's because it's a little bit more vloggy than usual, boh. There was a kyde deficiency, but for the 3 minutes that she was in the video she practically destroyed eric so that was funny enough, well now I ve said everything gonna go back to search for the sheep.
@alocino963 жыл бұрын
Actually this video didn't need kyde, I do like the videos where Eric is alone, my favorite series is the hitchinking series so that maybe the reason I like this one very much, but naturally I also like the normal videos and also the kyde-only videos

I think that is Nishiki Market. First time I went in 2017 it's shoulder to shoulder with people. My last trip there in feb 2020 (After China closed theirs and JUST before Japan closed the borders) it was empty like that. Kyoto is so different without tourist. In a way, it is better from a spiritual point of view.

Japanese "historical" structures/sites are required to be rebuilt every half or a century or so, because they are mostly made of wood. So only the blueprints are truly historical. This is different to the old stone buildings in Europe which basically last forever

Have you tried buying those discount train tickets they sell at those shops near the train stations? Are they legit? I hear people use them to cash out money from their credit cards or gift cards. As I've gotten older (in my 30s), even as a fellow cheap bastard, I now pay for comfortable transportation - it's worth it. The best restaurants are in alleyways! I love how there are different shrines for different diseases/needs. It keeps people moving to different shrines, rather than going to the same one everytime. Ring the bell - gotta wake up those dang spirits! You're so blessed to travel Japan with so few tourists. I hope you use's your stopwatch to keep to the minute for your filming lol! Golden hour makes everyone look good. The autumn colors at sunset were amazing. the UV light was cool. You wanted to buy a toothbrush, didn't you? Damn - CHEAP HOTELS! That's amazing, for such a clean huge hotel room in Kyoto - you can't turn that down. I love Kyde, but sometimes it's nice to just have some Eric videos. I'm looking forward to them! :D
