I have met Eric multiple times, (advantage of working in a guitar store) you will not find a nicer and more humble musician on earth. He once offered me to go on stage with him and play, I'm not nearly good enough for that. He is one of those guitarists that other guitarists sit in awe watching him play, knowing they will never be that good. Most concerts I go to I find a few riffs and licks to steal, the first time I saw him live I just stood there like an idiot with my mouth open. FYI he is from Austin, Texas.

I saw Eric at a big Rock Festival in San Antonio in 1992 right after this came out. He said he doesn’t feel like he can take credit for writing this song. He said a higher power must have been involved because it just came to him and he wrote it in FIVE MINUTES!

Eric was a contemporary of Stevie Ray Vaughan in the Austin, TX music scene in the 1980's - they were the two hottest "guns" in town. He actually won a Grammy for the studio version of "Cliffs of Dover," and is most widely known amongst guitarists - and although he does sing, he is mainly known as an instrumental guitarist which is why he never got huge attention from the mainstream. Another very cool thing about EJ is that he used mostly vintage guitars and amps, especially back then. The guitar in the video is a first year production Fender Stratocaster from 1954, and most of his amps and pedals where from the 60's and 70's. His sound is known as the "Violin Tone" amongst guitarists, and his hearing is so discerning that he can hear the difference in battery brands in his effect pedals. As for the anime comment, I never thought about it, but in this video he does look like the character of Roy Fokker from the 80's anime series "Robotech"...

I've read Eric was a child prodigy classical player & had composed his first piece at 5 yrs old. Also equally interested in jazz & Texas Blues for his entire youth. I saw him in 84' & 85' in a small bar in Charlotte with 116 people capacity. Think it was called The Double Door Inn. You wouldn't believe how loud he was. The bar was just one long room, low ceiling & he setup & one end. He had two half-stacks & two Fender Twins. One of the half-stacks was behind the others & faced the drummer as a monitor... Only PA was two TL Cabinets raised to the 8 foot ceiling. Three piece band. First time I saw him he did mostly Hendrix covers. He went completely wild on Hendrix's Are You Experienced backwards lead part, extended. First time I had ever seen reverse/backwards notes played live, so awesome! The 84' show was totally instrumental. 85' show had vocals since he had released an album in the previous year. Thanks for your reaction!

I saw Eric as part of a G3 concert with Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (the host); despite the differences in genres between Joe and Steve Eric held his own without any difficulty at all, he’s just a great melodic guitarist! You can listen to anything from Eric all of his music is really accessible. Nice reaction Maddy, it looked very much like you were enjoying it! 🌹

I went to the first G3. They had an opening act, Adrian Legg.. the dude was amazing. Played an acoustic guitar and changed tuning *while* playing to do some crazy impossible bends. Search KZbin for Adrian Legg - Midwest Sunday for an example.

What an anthem song if there ever was one. Dang. I agree the intro is a sweet sound and on loop would be cool. I dig his high school marching band coat. He could merchandise that and donate the proceeds.

Eric Johnson was a legend before he was even famous. Their was a Guitar Player magazine feature on him before he was famous, with players like Stevie Ray Vaughn and Billy Gibbons talking about how amazing he was. Someone said he sounded like if Jimi Hendrix went on to study with Barney Kessel for 5 years; Kessel was a legendary jazz player. Joe Bonamassa always jokes and says he stole most of his style from Eric. Special player, and seems really really nice in all interviews I've heard by him.

I always liked this, the main body of the recording - used to hear it a long time ago, as someone used to use it on the radio as their 'bumper' music (fade out and back in from commercial hard-breaks). I have a Stratocaster very similar to his, but mine never sounded so good - LOL!

Eric Johnson is one of many instrumental guitar composers that u can check out... Of course, the King is Joe Satriani, who I got to see live in concert 🤘🤘 Steve Vai (who studied under Satriani) has a more eclectic style of playing... I've also seen other solo guitarists - Vinnie Moore... Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal ... Gary Hoey... Yngwie J. Malmsteen ... And I got to experience former Scorpions lead guitarist Uli Jon Roth in concert playing his classic Scorpions songs.
