When you listen to the live videos chronologically of EJ playing Cliffs Of Dover live you can hear an evolution of his playing. This video is the earliest I have seen and it seems like he is still figuring things out. If this was 1984 then it would be before Eric recorded the song in the studio.

There’s a rawness to this version that I love. Yeah he’s still perfecting it... but later versions are so much more polished and here you can see/hear him “reaching” to get there so you can tell he’s so into it. All his versions are amazing, but I love this one. It’s like you get a look inside his brain and how he thinks.

Saw this around the late 90's, I was into guitars and drums by then so it was a pleasure catching this on the good old TV set a time when there where no internet yet on our area, at least a fast one. Tnx for uploading it at youtube, timeless performance!

You can hear a good bit of roughness in this one. But hey, even EJ had to figure out to get a hold of this beast.

He sounded better when his playing was unrefined. Kinda like Vai and EVH whose playing suffered once they discovered digital fx and high gain amps
