I remember being into Satriani, Malmsteen and Vai as a teen. Then I watched this G3 performance with Eric and it changed me. Now As a nearly 40 year old, with a music degree in jazz and a full-time music teaching job, it's a bit harder to knock my socks off. But this guy and this particular performance continues to melt my face every time I hear it, without fail. The most unique lead sound on a strat I've ever heard. Not to mention the most considered melodies. The more you learn, the more you can appreciate Eric.

Players like Eric are rare. He and guys like Robben Ford play in a way that is very deliberate and calculated while also managing not to micromanage the natural flow out of the riffs. I’m not sure if that makes sense but that’s the best way I can put it. Played beautifully and squeaky clean without sounding sterile.

The reason I love this guy, apart from his style and musicality, is that his lead guitar tone didn't change over the years. Even if his fellow guitarists we're busy improving their sound here and there. He really claimed this tonal identity.

I have played '''at'''' the guitar for over 59 years.....this guy is at a level of another planet...why? '''many '''shred'''' but Eric not only can shred, he brings beauty, taste, and last but not least, a smoothness not may have accomplished....from the days of ''moonlight in vermont''' as only Johnny Smith played, to Eric...i stand and applaud him !!!

Some of the great pianists are as comfortable stating a melody using an inside voice of chords as they might be playing just the notes. I have always sought out such players in my productions. It’s a very special talent, making the same melody brand new. Bill Evans was superb at this, ditto Monty Alexander, and a good friend of mine, Alex Darqui. Eric is one of very few guitarists with that same facility. It never gets old.

Although it breaks my heart to see how few people know or appreciate this angel... it fills me with great relief to see that he never changed his style to become the mega mainstream star that he so deserved to be. A true hidden gem for those who know
