Not saying it was good for them, nor that it did not take some toll, but certainly the catalogue is not limited to the Stones. .....so...because I just love to read the comments from the peanut gallery... 1st off, I could write a book about the pains and tribulations that come with trying to do what Eric does the way he does it. Everybody has their own style and their own method of playing. They create that over the duration of their career. He worked to do what he felt made him unique and showcased the kinds of musical ideas that he wanted to express, in as succinct of a manner as possible. When he RE WROTE the book (note every single electric guitarist playing today rips his licks and they are so signature that it is obvious to anyone who is familiar with Ej's playing where they come from. They stick out like RED ink on a black and white printed page), the availability of the kinds of gear, that fortuitously helped in the fine balance of the alchemy of that process, was already disappearing and decaying. That was nearly 35 years ago. Lots comes into play. Everybody seems an expert here and wants to chime their 2 cents. Everybody is a manager too. If he had done this he would be this. Well....if he'd been a girl and sung "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Muskrat Love" he'd be the Captain and Tennille and you wouldn't be talking about his guitar playing. One guitar, one amp, one whatever...one jacket...one set of earmuffs..... it.doesn't dictate an entire scenario. "I don't like the geranium test tubes version as well as the glass bottom boat version of the pickle jar fuzzmotron." Most people have very simple set ups comparatively...and they have very simple jobs to do. Most guitar players have MISERABLE tone on their best days. He covers 6+ guitarists in one sitting...whereas most guys get ONE sound add or subtract wah wah.... As for the high E saddle...Eric always used a custom E saddle with a nylon insert to take the top end off of the e - string on the strat in the old days. This came from the nylon saddles used on Gibson ABR - 1 bridges. The guitar is a "Virginia" custom shop prototype guitar, hence the custom saddle. My god you'd think he put a left handed tremelo block in it.... oh....well...that's that other guy. The song is called S.R.V. because we were friends with Stevie....Eric wanted to make up a song that had some of the inflections that he heard in Stevie's playing that HE especially liked. If you wanna write your own Stevie Ray song with your favorite bits....man it's a free country go for it. As for this particular performance...I will add that everyone is really spoiled. You have a video of every burp and fart of every musician who ever played ANYWHERE at your fingertips on the internet. You know every person on the planet now has a telephone with a microphone and a camera and they think they're a mobile recording truck. There is NEVER a fair representation of what the ear hears from the speakers at the gig and even THAT is subjective, depending on what part of the room your sitting in....and this little Chekovian morsel...is one person's phone...at one position...x feet from wherever...at throw and go concert...with NO soundcheck to speak of...and an intensely MISERABLE monitor mix. This is a nice little gathering at a guitar show...it's not Carne Guisada Hall. We love the comments about Gene Hackman... at least I look like a YOUNG Gene Hackman....I hope you LIVE to be 60+ years old too...God Bless. Maybe you'll have some hair at all and we can recognize your features over and above the wrinkles where your face used to be. Eric does pretty well for 65 and he looks pretty damned good for 65...and really he can play just about anything he ever could...provided the gear will act right and give it up. That is a harder and harder thing to achieve with each passing day as I alluded to in the second paragraph. A great deal has to do with how the gear responds in your hand. The complexities of that....most people can't even begin to grok. The majority of people play with so much gain and saturation in their tone that they can do anything...but it sounds like that. He doesn't cheat. His style of picking and all of that is based around his concepts...if he changed that...then you'd complain he doesn't pick like he used to. It never ends... If you like Eric...that's fantastic! Keep supporting him! It's tough to go out and keep doing this at our age and even get by financially. If I'm involved...I'm out there playing for YOU...and we give everything we have...on every night. To quote Jack Bruce about Cream...roughly "some nights we were great and those are the recordings you are familiar with...other nights we were miserable." It's not a symphony where everything is written on a page and performed like an exercise. Its almost ALL improv within a framework...sometimes it's brilliant and maybe sometimes it's not. We do our best. If it's less than what you expected...try us again. If we lit up your tree, we're ecstatic. Go play your instrument. Write some songs. Jam with some friends. Life is short. It won't be long before the younger of you will be talking about this video and we might not even be alive. TT

brilliant perspective and context--this is especially valuable because you are there in the moment, so thank you for sharing this, pulling back the curtain just a bit and reminding us of just how challenging it is to get out on stage and lay it all out there. EJ is simply brilliant, always has been (and lucky to have you and Kyle there to back him up) --amongst a sea of immensely talented artists in music history, there are a handful of music icons and visionaries who forever advanced and influenced what music can and could be, and surely EJ must be included in that group .
