I subscribe to the idea that as a bass player and most likely the only one in the band that we are always taking a solo! 😁

I saw Him last Friday night in Milwaukee WI. The guy is still out there killing it at 69. His tone is one of a kind.

I stumbled across this episode of ACL when it first aired on PBS....When Eric played the first notes of Cliffs of Dover it changed everything for me. His playing was mesmerizing and majestic, like nothing I've ever heard before. You should check out more from the show..Thx for the honest reaction as always.

Eric Johnson is a phenomenal player. Lots of people in the comments say they prefer Steve Morse which is very valid however its important to say their roots are different as musicians and their music generally goes in different directions from one another so its very much Apples and Oranges. For one thing Eric for most of his career has done a lot more singer songwriter orintated stuff also a lot of blues acoustic and also dipped his toe into a lot more fingerstyle and country, especially in the styles of Chet Atkins, Merle Travis and those legendary fingerstyle country players which EJ himself is a VERY formidable acoustic guitar player. Eric sings on a huge number of his songs aswell while playing the way he does which is incredible on if itself, people kind of forget that about him, that he can sing. Also Eric is a very good piano player he was in fact playing piano before he started playing guitar and has played piano on a lot of his later albums.

If you happened to live in Austin in 2001, Eric Johnson joined Satch, Vai and Petrucci on the stage for G3. Austin being Eric's home town.

You need to check out his song Desert Rose. You just happened to pick one his instrumentals. Yes , Eric sings on the majority of his songs. Please check out the album Ah Via Musicom and Desert Rose which is a well written song, not only a shred fest. His vocals are great on that one.

Love Eric's playing, but always vastly preferred Steve Morse, especially as a composer. When it comes to writing, Steve is a genius. (Eric has said as much on multiple occasions.) Shawn Lane and Daryl Stuermer, too. But, as a player, Eric is simply one of the greatest. Incredibly nice guy, too, just like Steve, Shawn, and Daryl. This was cool - Satriani-esque, i.e. basically a setup for the soloist to go nuts - but cool. It had the desired effect.

Back when guitar heroes were still a thing. And leather pants. And mullets. 😁 I've always loved EJ's tone. It had to be hard for him to somehow stand out from the crowd given he was part of that whole 70's Texas guitar-slinger crowd. I prefer EJ over SRV because I feel like Eric brings a broader harmonic vocabulary to the table when he solos. I agree SRV was a more fluid and natural soloist, but from what I've seen he never strayed from the standard blues vocabulary, which puts me to sleep pretty quickly. About it being hard to solo on bass when you're backing a guitar maestro, one show I'll never forget was the Steve Morse band in a club when Dave LaRue was with him. Whoo-EEE, that was a face-melter.

I mentioned I saw G3 tour in PA years ago... Dave LaRue was playing I think with John Petrucci. I stopped at a convenience store near the venue before the gig and Dave LaRue was in there and I said hey lol. Berklee guy pretty sure.

@@JustinPanariello Dave is an amazing guy. Met him at a Morse show a million years ago and he was giving me all kinds of advice on working in the music business. And yeah, Berklee grad. So too, I believe, is drummer Van Romaine.

I agree with your assessment of the difference between Eric and SRV. Both are incredible players but I don’t reach for EJ as I do SRV because of the feel as you say. Feel for me is the big decider in music. I’d rather listen to someone that doesn’t; have great chops but great feel as apposed to the other way around. I used to do gigs with a guy who was a terrible guitar player and an adequate singer, but he had great feel and people LOVED him. It took me a minute to figure this out as i knew he wasn’t that ‘good’ and initially was somewhat embarrassed to play with him until I saw the crowds reaction to him. He was absolutely real all the time and the audience knew it.

There was no rivalry between Stevie and Eric that I know of. If there was something it was not on Eric’s part. EJ always had a deep respect for SRV and wrote an instrumental with those initials as the title. It was on his album Venus Isle. Stevie was a completely different player than Eric and you can say that Stevie had more feel, but Eric also has feel and Eric does sing and writes great songs. You can have an opinion about which songs you prefer, but they are apples and oranges as players. Stevie’s style has intrinsic feel built into it and Eric went a completely different route and he certainly has feel. To say otherwise just strikes me as an ignorant view point based on one sample that was not a good representation of his playing. It was kind of a mediocre song from his first album. It’s more of a shredding platform than a song really. Listen to Dersert Rose and then you can have of an informed opinion.

So, Eric Johnson opened for Rush on part of the Roll the Bones tour, which was the first time I saw the boys live. Was excited for Eric Johnson but Instead we got Mr. Big. Ugh. I know some people love Billy Sheehan but it just wasn't exciting for me.

Gotta respect all the skill/talent but I'd rather watch good guitar on a great song than a song that's there to serve the guitar... Granted that line is kind of a moving target with guys like Santana or SRV, but I know when somebody crosses it. First and foremost, it's the songs that people remember.

" First and foremost, it's the songs that people remember." Yup. Certainly true in my case.
